Chapter 01
Let us collect merit

1. We have been born in many times in Saṃsāra (vicious Cycle) of births and rebirths
(Punabbhava).
2. If we commit sins, we would go on being born in Samsara with lot of unhappiness in life.
3. We should be cautious of what we so in life, in order to live and be born to a better state of
life.
4. Vipāka (effect) means that results, there are two kind of Vipāka as Kusala Vipāka and
Akusala Vipāka.
5. If people violate the five precepts, they would have to face the consequences later,
according to the natural laws of cause and effect.
6. If as Buddhists we can adjust our way of life according to the five precepts. We can live
happily and peacefully in this world and also help the others to live likewise.
7. One's own behavior patterns that one can purify one’s mind, while carrying out ones
responsibilities too.
8. One some Brahmins came to meet the Buddha, they asked two questions, why some people
are born in happy states (Heaven, human world) or unhappy states (hells) after death.
9. If people have a life, harming others or against the Dhamma Known as Adhamma Cariyā
or Visama Cariyā.
10. If people have a life of honor according to the Dhamma known as Dhamma Cariyā or
Sama Cariyā.
11. Bad deeds collect Dasa Akusal or ten unwholesome deeds.
12. Good deeds collect Dasa Kusal or ten wholesome deeds.
13. Those who engage with Dhamma Cariyā and Sama Cariyā will reap the benefits of good
living and one day born in good states.
14. So if one commits sins he would finally have to face bad results (Ex:- Chunda Sukara
story and eye physician story).
15. Young Subha questioned from the Buddha why difference exists in the society, that time
Buddha preached him to Cullakamma Vibhanga Sutta as answers for his questions.
16. In Cullakamma Vibhanga Sutta was explained fourteen facts relevance to difference
exists among the beings.
17. Subha asked the Buddha reasons for 14 difference that can be observed in individuals.
18. There are ten Akusala Kamma or ten unwholesome deeds.

14 questions Reasons

1. Some people are short lived. Killing beings

2. Some enjoy long life. Abstaining from killing

3. Some suffer from diseases Torturing living beings

4. Some are healthy Abstaining from torturing

5. Some are ugly Committing actions with anger

6. Some are beautiful Committing actions with kindness

7. Some have not influential Being jealous of other's comforts

8. Some have influential Not being jealous of others

9. Some are poor Being stingy -not a giver

10. Some are wealthy Being generous

11. Some are born in low caste Not respecting those worthy of respecting

12. Some are born in high cast respecting those worthy of respect

13. Some are foolish Not knowing what is good and what is not good

14. Some are wise knowing what is good and what is not good
19. All unwholesome deeds are done by bodily, verbally and mentally. (Dasa Akusala)
1. Pānātipātaā- Killing
2. Adinnādānā - Stealing Bodily

3. Kāmesumicchācārā – Sensual misbehavior


4. Musāvādā - lying
5. Pisunāvācā - Slandering Verbally
6. Phsrusāvācā - Harsh speech
7. Sampappalāpā - Frivolous talk
8. Abhijjā - Covetousness
9. Vyāpāda - ill will Mentally
10. Micchādiṭṭhi - Wrong views

20. The ten kinds of meritorious deeds (Dasa puñña kiriyavatthu)


1 - Dāna - (Charity)
2 - Sīla - (Morality)
3 - Bhāvanā - (Meditation)
4 - Apacāyana - (Paying respect)
5 - Veyyāvacca - (Service)
6 - Patti-dāna - (Sharing of merit)
7 - Pattānumodanā - (Rejoicing at patti-dāna)
8 - Dhammasavana - (Listening to the dhamma)
9 - Dhamma Desanā - (Preaching dhamma)
10 - Diṭṭhijukamma - (Righteous belief)
