Introduction to Kirigami
Honeycombs
A kirigami honeycomb structure was
produced from cardstock paper and cut along
8 tightly created folds (1” by 1”). Bending the
paper in three different ways allows for the
structure to be flattened like a pancake and
spring back into its original shape. The
structure is still sturdy from another point
(top), enough to hold a larger weight.
Photo represents how hives are constructed
and bridge together parts of the environment
in odd locations in nature.
Developing the
Structure
The system contracts on itself.
This flexibility allows for the
structure to stretch showing a
full hexagon, and then compress
back into a flattened shape. I
aim to use this unique aspect of
the kirigami to create art that
displays this stretch while
mimicking objects we already
see in nature.
Final Product:
Blooming Honeycomb
The product I created was a
sunflower, inspired both by the
honeycomb kirigami, but also the
connection I have with sunflowers
and bees in general. After going to the
sunflower fields, It reminded me of
how interconnected pollinator
communities are. I also noticed that
sunflowers produce a unique radial
structure that accompanies the
mirrors well. Allowing me to produce
a product through ¼ of the real size!
