• Juan Luna (1857-1899) is best known for impressive rendition of classical subjects in
his academic works. These works include historical scenes and portraiture, however
subsequently he turned to realism depicting social inequalities. In this lesson, th
e "Spoliarium" and "The Parisian Life" are Luna's paintings presented for the analysis of
the students.

Juan Luna (1857-1899)-A genius of the brush and a patriot of the highest order
Creator of the world-famous painting, SPOLARIUM, which was awarded the gold medal
in the Exposicion Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid in 1884. It is also known as the
greatest painting of all times. Born in Badoc, locos, Norte, on October 23, 1857. He
was closely associated with the Reform Movement, together with Rizal, Lopez-Jaena,
Ponce, etc. He died in Hongkong on December 7, 1899. Juan Luna y Novicio is
considered one of the greatest painters in Philippine history. His achievements as a
classical painter in the 1880's quickly elevated him to the top circles of European art,
and for the first time brought respect to Filipino artists.

SPOLIARIUM 19TH Century - Juan Luna


The painting features a glimpse of Roman history
centered on the bloody carnage brought by gladiatorial
matches. Spoliarium is a Latin word referring to the
basement of the Roman Colosseum where the fallen and
dying gladiators are dumped and devoid of their worldly
possessions.This is the most valuable oil on-canvass
painting with a size of 4.22 meters × 7.675 meters,
making it the largest painang in the Philippines. It won
First Gold Medal in 1884 as an entry to the prestgious

Fernando Cueto Amorsolo


Fernando Cueto Amorsolo was one of the most important artists in Philippine painting
history. He is popularly known as a portraitist and painter of rural landscapes,
craftsmanship, and mastery in the backlighting technique. Amorsolo was born on May 30,
1892 in Paco, Manila. At 13, he became an apprentice of Don Fabian de la Rosa, his
mother's cousin. Don Fabian eventually become the advocate and guide of the painting
career of Amorsolo. His first success as a young painter came in 1908 when his
painting Leyendo el periodico took second place at the Bazar Escolta, a contest organized
by the Asociacion Internacional de Artistas. He entered art schools: The Art School of the
Liceo de Manila, University of the Philippines' School of Fine Arts, and Academia de San
Fernando in Madrid. Academia de San Fernando became his training ground in painting,
experimenting with lights and colors. His migration to New York City also heavenly
influenced his impressionist and cubist styles.

• Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972) delights people of his impressionistic


technique depicting idyllic country scenes, beautiful maidens, and colorfully
dressed peasants planting or harvesting rice. The paintings are significant in
the development of the formation of Filipino notions of self and identity. In
