The concept of the public goods: A view from a Filipino philosopher

1. Difficult Concepts
a. Private Public Goods
b. Politico ethical sense of Public Goods
c. Difference of Public Goods and Private Goods

2. Learning Insights
a. Before reading the article, I thought that the private goods are both excludable and rival in
consumption.

However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that people can be prevented from
using a private good. You don’t get one unless you pay. Once you have it, you are the only
person who benefits. You don’t give your shoes to someone. Private good scan be rejected

b. Before reading the article, I thought that the concept of public good is about the
characteristic of a person in a public.
However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that the concept of the public good
carries largely the politico-ethical sense which subsumes the politico-economic sense. The
public good is public in the sense that the beneficiaries are the general.

c. Before reading the article, I thought that it was easy to understand

However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that public goods are the ones which
are provided by the nature or government for free use by the public. Private goods are the
ones which are manufactured and sold by the private companies to satisfy the consumer
needs and wants.

3. Discussion Questions
a. Why the voluntary provision of public goods may lead to inefficient levels of provision?

b. The tension between individual and group interests in the voluntary provision of public
goods.

c. The two defining characteristics of a public goods.
