entering the cable. Coaxial cable has a specific characteristic impedance
(usually 50, 75, or 95 9). A 75-0 cable is used with a dipole television
antenna that terminates in an impedance of about 75 1.
TWO-WIRE LINE A balanced, two-wire line is made of two separate
lines of stranded Wire with a plastic insulator covering. The plastic
maintains a spacing of % inch or more between the wires (Figure
20-9). The line usually has an impedance of 300 2 to match the 300-
antenna input terminals on the receiver. This type of open-wire line
is generally called a 300-0 twin-lead. Use a balan for 75-0 inputs.
The line is balanced because the currents in the two wires are of
equal magnitude but travel in opposite directions. The electromag-
netic field travels along the line instead of being radiated, so the line
has a very low signal loss.
UF coaxial cable, then, isan unbalanced, higher-loss line, why isit used?
Although coaxial has a higher signal loss, it is used because its outer
shield prevents pickup of interfering signals, and itis easier to install.
