MEDITATION GUIDE

INTRODUCTION

A WO R D O N M EDITATION FROM
R A BB I B RIA N

A diligent search of the Scriptures will reveal that meditation is an ancient art of receiving
revelation from God and His Word that is lacking in the life of many believers. To rediscover
this ancient discipline, we must go on a journey through the Hebrew Scriptures of the Old
Testament.
When Moses finished writing the Torah—Genesis through Deuteronomy—he passed the
prophetic baton to Joshua, his apprentice. Joshua not only received the Torah instructions
that Moses was commanded to teach Israel, but he was also the first person to introduce
us to the biblical art of meditation. I’m not referring to the form of meditation prescribed by
Buddhist monks—to empty the mind of its thoughts—but rather, the discipline of filling the
heart and soul with the precious revelation of God’s treasury of Scripture.
The first and primary term for meditation used by Joshua is from the Hebrew root, hagah
(‫)הגה‬, recorded in the book of Joshua.
This Book of the Law [Torah] shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate
[hagah (‫ ])הגה‬in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written
in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. —
Joshua 1:8 (NKJV)
This ancient practice promises two things: a prosperous journey of faith, and good
success in every endeavor. To unpack the wealth of meditation, we first have to understand
the language in which this term originated. The language of Hebrew, which is a multilayered
language, is rich in meaning. Unlike Greek thought, which is a static language based on form,
Hebrew is a dynamic form of speech, based on function.
For example, a common noun in Hebrew, like most verbs, describes the action of the
object’s existence or essence, which often reveals the purpose for its creation. The function
of the Hebrew word for meditating carries the effect of rethinking or even rechewing what
we have read, like that of a cow chewing its cud. This is called rumination, usually referring
to animals that chew their food multiple times for proper digestion and assimilation, as the

HEARING GOD | 2
food processes through four different compartments of the stomach.
The Law of Moses describes the cow as a ruminant, which is considered to be kosher, or
“fit for use,” because they have a split hoof and chew their cud. Animals that chew their cud
will eat their food, swallow it, and then bring it back up again to rechew it. In this way, they get
all of the nutrients from what they eat and digest the food into their system in a more complete
way. Chewing is, of course, important to good health and digestion. How many times have
our parents told us to “chew your food properly”?
A common practice in the Old Testament was to meditate on the Word of God four times a
day—morning, afternoon, evening, and night—like a cow does with its four stomach compart-
ments during the rumination process. Conversely, a pig was considered unclean because
it has a split hoof but doesn’t chew the cud. Pigs have what is considered a real garbage
gut, since they will devour anything—including urine, excrement, dirt, decaying animal flesh,
maggots, and decaying vegetables. It will even eat the cancerous growths off pigs or other
animals.
Similarly, believers today must be careful to not digest sermons and teachings that are not
based upon the nutritious diet of God’s inerrant Word. Instead of being like “sloppy swine” that
devour anything in sight with their quick digestive process, we want to become like “kosher
cows,” which properly ruminate all day from the green pastures they have been led to graze
from. This is why Jesus will not cast His pearls—speaking of revelation—before swine.
Meditation is the process of chewing on the Word. We take a scripture, speak it, think
on it, and then we do it again. This is the biblical way to get the word into our system and
to receive revelation and understanding from its wisdom. To meditate, therefore, means to
ponder, regurgitate, think aloud, consider continuously, and to utter something over and over
again. This is precisely what we need to do with the word of God.
The time and focus that we invest into something usually dictate the quality of its outcome.
Meditation not only produces the fruits of prosperity and success in our spiritual growth, but
it also establishes us like a tree planted by the rivers of water, with leaves that do not wither
and fruit that produces in every season.
This Meditation Guide will empower you to read the Word of God with confidence, know-
ing that each step of meditation will allow you to absorb all of the precious nutrients that will
spiritually feed your hearts and minds. A spiritual hunger for more revelation will awaken
within you as you discover how to meditate on Scripture both day and night.

T H E BA N QU ET

To you it has been given to know the mystery of the

kingdom of God; but to those who are outside,
all things come in parables.
Mark 4:11

God desires to reveal the mysteries of His kingdom. Don’t be frightened by the word “mystery.”
The Greek word used for mystery does not mean “mysterious” or “ambiguous.” It means,
“hidden or not fully manifested.”
Picture it like this: you are at a fancy restaurant. The chef comes to your table to ascertain
your culinary preferences. He then customizes a meal to your particular tastes. When the
meal is ready, a waiter comes and places your entrée in front of you. Because this is such a
nice restaurant, the entrée remains covered until the time of its unveiling. You know what sits
before you is your meal, but there is a certain mystery that still surrounds the dish.
When the time is right, the waiter says, “Voilà!” and removes the cover from the dish.
Now you’re able to see the meal the chef crafted for you. It’s not as if the meal did not exist
before the cover was removed; the food was present even before you knew what it was. The
waiter revealed the “mystery” of your dinner. The entrée was also known to the chef, but it
was hidden from you until the cover was removed.
Just like the waiter unveiled the prepared entrée, Jesus will disclose His mysteries through
revelation. He assured, “[Things are hidden temporarily only as a means to revelation.] For
there is nothing hidden except to be revealed, nor is anything [temporarily] kept secret except
in order that it may be made known” (Mark 4:22 AMPC).
God’s mysteries are hidden temporarily with the intent of being disclosed. This is the
whole nature of revelation—to simply reveal what already exists. Staying with our analogy of
food, listen to what God said through the prophet Isaiah:

Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength?
Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you

HEARING GOD | 4
will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food.
Isaiah 55:2 NLT

God likens His word to food—good food! Food is what our bodies need for energy and
nourishment. In a similar manner, our spirits will receive sustenance as we feed on God’s
word. Speaking of this need, Jesus disclosed, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but man
lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Notice the word
“proceeds”—that’s present tense. It is the Word that God is speaking now that feeds and
sustains us.
We must always be as hungry for God as we are for physical food. Throughout the Bible,
there were a few who understood the importance of regularly feeding on God’s revealed
Word. Jeremiah confessed, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to
me the joy and rejoicing of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16). Job admitted, “I have treasured the
words of His mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23:12). When God visited Ezekiel and
imparted His message into him, God instructed, “Son of man, eat this book that I am giving
you. Make a full meal of it . . . get all these words that I’m giving you inside you. Listen to them
obediently. Make them your own” (Ezekiel 3:2, 10 MSG).
So, the question remains—How do we eat what God reveals to us? The answer—medi-
tation. Biblical meditation, unlike eastern religions, is the filling of the mind with God’s word.
Meditation can be likened as the digestive system of the soul—it enables us to fully assimilate
all that God speaks to us. Other words for meditation include: to contemplate, think, ponder,
muse, ruminate, and reflect.
With this in mind, Jesus taught, “Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought
and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that
comes back to you—and more [besides] will be given to you who hear” (Mark 4:24 AMPC).
To carefully steward what God speaks to us will require a measure of thought and study
given to His revelation. This is why meditating on God’s revealed Word is so important—medi-
tation leads to revelation! Charles Spurgeon had a great analogy for this neglected spiritual
discipline. He shared, “Let me compare meditation to a wine press. By reading and research
and study we gather the grapes; but it is by meditation we press out the juices of these grapes
and obtain the wine.”
When we carefully digest God’s Word, our capacity to receive larger portions of revela-
tion will increase. Sadly, many settle for snacking on God’s revelation while missing out on
the feast He has prepared for them to enjoy. As you take the time to meditate on what God is
saying to you, you’ll begin to feast on the delicious meals He has prepared for you.
So, take your seat at the banquet table—your food is on its way!

For food to be digested correctly, it must travel through a digestive tract, beginning with the
mouth right through the stomach and intestines. Likewise, to correctly digest God’s revela-
tion into our heart, we must meditate on what He has revealed. Remember: meditation is the
digestive system of the soul.

Scriptures with less difficulty. Prayer has now become easy,

Master those books you have. Read them thoroughly. Bathe in

them until they saturate you. Read and reread them . . . digest
them. Let them go into your very self. Peruse a good book several
times and make notes and analyses of it. A student will find that his
mental constitution is more affected by one book thoroughly mas-
tered than by twenty books he has merely skimmed. Little learning
and much pride comes from hasty reading. Some men are dis-
abled from thinking by their putting meditation away for the sake
of much reading. In reading let your motto be ‘much, not many’.
