ALL HOMEWORK SHOULD BE BANNED IN ALL SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOLS

Affirmative:

Introduction:
1. Good morning/afternoon. /Mr/Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen.
2. The topic for our debate is ‘that all homeworks should be banned in all South Africa
schools

Definition:
1. We, the affirmative team, define homework as a set of tasks assigned to students by
their teachers to be completed
outside the classroom. Common homework assignments may include required reading,
a writing or typing project, mathematical exercises to be completed and information to
be reviewed.
So we see homework banishment as the complete elimination of homeworks.

2. We, the affirmative team, believe that this statement is true.

Team split:
1. Today as first speaker, I will be talking to you about in which way the abolishement
of homeworks provide more time for extracurricular activities and reduce academic
pressure.
2. Our second speaker will be talking about

3. Our third speaker will rebut the negative team and sum up our team case.

Arguments:
Now I am going to present my 2 points

2. My first point is about how a life without homework can provide more time for extra
currricular activities. A life without homework provide more time for extra-curricular
activities as students would no longer have to spend hours each evening finishing
assignments and studying for exams. With this extra time, students can devote more
energy to their passions, such as sports, music, arts, clubs, and volunteering. When
students are less stressed and have more free time, they are more likely to enjoy their
extra-curricular activities and perform better in them. This extra time can also help them
develop skills and experiences that will be valuable in their personal and professional
lives in the future. For example, in a survey of 1,100 high school students by the
Stanford University Graduate School of Education, 56% of students said that homework
was their primary source of stress, and 43% said that homework prevented them from
spending time on activities they enjoyed. In contrast, when homework was reduced or
eliminated, students reported feeling less stressed and having more time for hobbies and
interests .

3. And my second point is about the academic pressure that the homeworks provides.
Less homework can reduce stress, increase free time for self-care and other activities,
improve motivation, and help students learn better time management skills. This can
lead to less academic pressure and better overall well-being and academic performance.
A study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania found that high school students
who completed more than two hours of homework per night had higher stress levels,
less free time for leisure activities, and experienced health problems such as sleep
deprivation.

Ending:
So Mr/Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, in conclusion when students have less
homework, they are less stressed and have more time to engage in activities that
promote well-being and academic success and it can also result in a more productive
and focused learning environment.

I'm Isaura and yes, i believe that all homeworks should be banned in all South Africa
schools.

thank you
Negative:

Introduction:
1. Good morning/afternoon/evening Mr/Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen

2.My name is Isaura and The topic for our debate is that all homework should be
banned in all South African schools

Definition:
1. We agree with the definition given by the affirmative team.
OR
We disagree with the definition given by the opposition. (If you disagree explain why
the opposition’s
definition is wrong.)

My definition:
define homework as a set of tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be
completed
outside the classroom. Common homework assignments may include required reading,
a writing or typing project, mathematical exercises to be completed and information to
be reviewed.
So we see homework banishment as the complete elimination of homeworks.

2. However we, the negative team, believe that this statement is false.

Team split:
1. Today as first speaker I will be talking to you about the reduction os academic
performance and the need for extra classes that the banishment of homework results in.

2. Our second speaker will be talking about

3. Our third speaker will rebut the affirmative case and sum up our team case.

Arguments:

1. I am going to discuss 2 points.

My first point is the reduced academic performance. Banning homework can lead to a
reduced academic performance because homework is an important tool for practicing
and reinforcing what students have learned in class. Without homework, students may
not have enough opportunities to apply and practice their skills, which can lead to gaps
in their understanding and lower grades. Additionally, homework helps develop
important study habits and time management skills that are necessary for academic
success. One example of the banishment of homework leading to reduced academic
performance is a study conducted in California. In the early 1900s, schools in California
experimented with the no-homework policy for elementary schools. However, in the
late 1920s, a study was conducted and found that students who did not receive
homework performed worse academically than those who did receive homework. This
study led to a resurgence of homework policies in California schools.

3. my second point is about the requirement for additional class time. When homework
is banned, students need to spend more time in class to cover the same amount of
material. This is because homework helps to reinforce what is learned in class and
encourages an independent and self-directed approach to learning. Without homework,
students are solely reliant on the teacher to cover all the necessary material during class
time, which may not be sufficient.

Ending:
So Mr/Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, in conclusion homework can be an
important tool because It reinforces concepts learned in class, develops study skills,
prepares students for exams, encourages parent involvement, and promotes personal
responsibility . And removing homework we will be removing all this benefits it
provides to us , having in count that extra lessons caudes by the banishment of
homework can increase academic exesse and pressure .

I'm Isaura and , i believe that homeworks should not be banned in all South African
schools.

Thank you
