My predictions
Yesterday, I was thinking about my family’s future and how things would go from now for us, I wonder what
we will have done in many years’ time! I’m working as a journalist at “The New York times” so by the end
of 2020, I will not have written a book yet but an article for that newspaper I know I will have. If I keep
saving money, I will have been able to buy a small house or an apartment. I really want to have my own
place by that year! I will also have improved my driving skills by the end of this year because I want to get
my license in order to drive my new car.
I hope that by 2022, I will have been engaged with my girlfriend so by the year 2023, I will have got married
with her. I will also have learned how to cook by the time I am married. I don’t really like cooking but I
know I have to learn to. And if I talk about children, perhaps by 2024, I will have had my first baby.
By the year 2022, my nephew Rodrigo will have finished the second year of high school. And his sister, who
is a baby now, will not have started kindergarten yet. But she will have begun to have little conversations
with us. And we will all have learned how to make Sylvana feel better when she is crying.
By next year, my sister Cecilia will not have finished the university yet. But she will have made many
contacts to find a good job when she ends her career. And maybe by the year 2022 she will have met the
man who will become her husband.
My brother Alonso will have worked 3 years for the school he just started working for this year. And because
of this new job he will have started studying his master degree and made several new good friends.
I’m sure my mom won’t have got a pet. She says she likes animals but she doesn’t like to clean the mess!
By next year, my father will have been retired so I hope my parents will have taken the vacation they have
been postponing. Although everybody in the family wants to learn to play the piano, nobody will have
learned to do it because we haven’t started the lessons yet!

READING
Caroline is one of the most popular girls in class. She has been
elected “Miss High School” for two years. Last year she almost
lost the contest for the new girl at school. Fortunately for her,
the boys kept their votes. Not only she is beautiful but she is
also a successful student. She has received the award for the
best student of the year several times. She has studied a lot this
year because she wants to get into a good university. She is also
a great writer. For many years she has had a part time job in the
public library and reading has been one of her major occupations.
This has led her to writing. She has written several short stories
recently. The first one came out last year and it was a huge success
among students and teachers. She is a very easy-going gsirl. Her parents are very rich. Not long ago they
bought a new house, which is far from our school but she told them: “I don’t want to move, I have studied
in this school for so long that I just can’t leave now”. They have respected her and so far, even if not for
long, she is still in our school.

GRAMMAR FOCUS I
¾¾ RELATIVE PRONOUNS
They are used to combine two sentences or clauses:
•• Use “who” or “that” to give more information about a person.
a) A n architect is a person who designs buildings.
b) They’re the people that want to buy our house.
•• Use “whose” to indicate possession by people and animals. In more formal styles we can also use it
for things.
a) I won’t eat in a restaurant whose cooks smoke.
b) That’s the man whose dog bit the little girl.
GRAMMAR FOCUS II
¾¾ DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
Use:
•• Use defining relative clauses to give information about a noun in a sentence. The listener or reader
NEEDS this information to understand the sentence.
a) A doctor is a person who cures sick people.
b) The girl who sits next to me at work has a bag just like yours.
Because defining relative clauses give essential information, no commas (,) are needed.
BE CAREFUL!
•• If the subjects in both parts of a sentence are the same, we cannot omit the pronoun, because it
becomes the subject of the clause.
a) The driver who took you to school is from York.
b) The pen that is on the desk is new.
•• There is only one subject in each sentence - the driver and the pen. If we leave out the subject, it
will not be clear what we mean.
a) Wrong: The driver took you to school is from York. (This sentence does not make any sense.)
2. Complete the sentences with one of the phrases in the box and “WHO” or “WHOSE”.
a) The parents thanked the woman who had saved their son .
b) The couple whose divorce was in the papers have got married again.
3. Join the sentences by means of a relative clause. Omit the relative when possible and match to the
pictures. The first one is done for you.
a) The man is reading the newspaper. He’s my friend.
The man who is reading the newspaper is my friend.
d) This is the girl. Paul fell in love with her last week.

A : Oh really? What a disturbing guy!
B : Actually, it was unbelievable. He was talking about politics and laws the whole time. He was.
A : Oh! I think you should wait for next day until you get a bus which can be quiet.
GRAMMAR FOCUS
¾¾ NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
Look at this sentence.
My grandfather, who is 87, goes swimming every day.
“who is 87” is a non -defining relative clause. It adds extra information to the sentence. If we take the
clause out of the sentence, the sentence still has the same meaning.
In the first sentence, it is clear which son is being talked about and the relative clause provides extra
information. In the second sentence, the speaker thinks you know which film you are talking about, and
the information about Tom Carter is just something interesting. In the third sentence, the speaker thinks
you already know which car is being discussed. The information about the speed is just for interest.
a) Al Gore gave a long and boring speech. He won the Nobel Prize.

b) Starbucks wants to open new stores in China. It does business all over the world.

READING
I love Norway!
My name is Thomas; I’m living in Norway for two years as an exchange student
with a friend called Sara. We live with a Norwegian family. James, who is thirty-
three years old, is an architect and Marie, who is a dentist, is twenty-nine years
old. They have a daughter who is one -year-old and her name is Elin.
The house is quite large. It has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen,
a study, a living room, a dining room, a special games room and a big front and back garden. My favorite
room is my bedroom. I love it because it is the only room in the house where I can lock myself away from
the rest of the world. After a long hard day, all I want to do is go up to my bedroom and listen to music,
or lie down, unwind and watch a bit of T.V. or maybe even a relaxing film.
Anyway, the last two months have been exciting. I’m starting to adjust to my new life in Norway reasonably
well. Although I can’t yet tell you everything.
One thing I’ve noticed here, which has required a fair bit of adjustment, is that almost everything is backwards
here! Seriously! Here are just a few things to which I’ve had to adjust:
•• They drive on the right instead of the left. This is a problem because I instinctively look the wrong direction
before crossing the road and it’s not easy to break the habit.
•• They have both Norwegian and English TV shows. They put Norwegian subtitles on the English shows
and no subtitles on the Norwegian shows.
•• Norwegians take their shoes off at the door and don’t wear them inside.
•• By the time someone turns 15 -16 years old in Norway; they are fairly independent from their parents.
Some people move out at that age and get their own apartment. There’s probably more, but I can’t
remember them all.
It started snowing here a few days ago, though it’s still a little warm and it melts away during the afternoon.
I’m looking forward to the ski season starting in the next few weeks.
At school, I took Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History classes, Spanish, Art and Philosophy - for which I
received half a credit in global studies. I’m learning a lot here, as well as to succeed in another culture. I now
know the world is my community and have a much deeper understanding of both myself and others.

Imagine you are Lucy. How do you say the reason why Sarah is absent?
•• When we want to say what somebody said we use REPORTED SPEECH also called INDIRECT SPEECH.
•• We can say “He said that...” or “He said...”, both are possible. “He said that...” is more formal.
•• When we use our own words to report speech, there are one or two things that we sometimes
change:
a) P ronouns may need to change to reflect a different perspective.
b) Tense sometimes has to go back one tense (eg, present becomes past) - this is called backshift.

SPEAKING
Do you remember the last class? Using the information you have written in your
homework, tell it to your partner.
Some students will present their works to the class.
−− “ You must wear your seatbelt,” mom said. ⇒ My mom said I had to wear my seatbelt.
−− She said, “You must work tomorrow.” ⇒ She said I had to work tomorrow.
“What a shot!”
Somebody said it was a (great) shot.
3. Read this article then find the underlined sentences and change them into reported speech.
I have a friend who is afraid of spiders. This isn’t very unusual; a lot of people are afraid of spiders. I
don’t really like spiders much myself. I don’t mind them if I see them outside in the garden, as long
as they’re not too big.
This is quite normal, I think. But my friend isn’t afraid of spiders in any normal way. She isn’t just afraid
of spiders, she is totally, completely and utterly terrified of them. When my friend sees a spider, she
doesn’t just go “Uurgghh!” or run away or ask someone else to get rid of the horrible creepy-crawly.
No, she screams as loud as she possibly can. She screams so loud that her neighbours worry about
her and think about calling the police. When she sees a spider, she shivers all over and sometimes she
freezes completely – she can’t move at all because she is so terrified. Sometimes she even faints.
But my friend had a surprise for me when we met for coffee last week.
−− “Guess what?” she asked me.
−− “What?” I said.
−− “I’ve got a new pet!”
−− “Great, I said”. “What is it? A dog? A cat?”
−− “No.”
−− “A budgie?”
−− “No.”
−− “A rabbit?”
−− “No.”
−− “What then?”
−− “I’ve got a pet spider.”
−− “I don’t believe you!”
−− “It’s true! I decided that it was time I did something about my phobia, so I went to visit a doctor,
a special doctor. A psychiatrist. This psychiatrist specialises in phobias – helping people who have
irrational fears to get better and live normally. He told me I suffered from “arachnophobia”.”
−− “It’s an irrational fear of spiders,” the doctor said. “About one in fifty people suffer from a severe
form of arachnophobia. It’s not very uncommon.”
−− I took a behavioural treatment and she could overcome her phobia.
−− OK, she did feel afraid, but only a tiny bit.
−− “So now I’ve got a pet spider!” She told me again.
−− “Well done!” I said.
−− “There’s only one problem,” she said, and as she spoke I noticed that she was shivering all over.
Then she screamed and climbed up on the chair. She was pointing to something on the floor.
−− “Over there!” She screamed. “Look! It’s a beetle!”.

About ten minutes later, the bell rang for dinner, and, as Virginia did not come down, Mrs. Otis sent up
one of the servants. After a little time he returned and said that he could not find Miss Virginia anywhere.
So, the whole family started looking for her.
The hours passed, but they could find no trace of Virginia. So, after dinner, Mr. Otis ordered them all
to bed, saying that nothing more could be done that night, and that he would contact Scotland Yard in
the morning. Just when everybody was about to leave the dining room, the clock struck midnight, and
when the last stroke sounded, a secret door opened in the wall and in that door stood Virginia with a
little box in her hand. Everybody ran up to her.
“Good heavens! Child, where have you been?” said Mr. Otis, rather angrily, as he thought she had been
playing a trick on them.
“Papa,” said Virginia quietly, “I have been with the ghost. He is dead, and you must come and see him.
He had been very nasty, but he was really sorry for all that he had done, and he gave me this box of
beautiful jewels before he died.”
Then she led the others down a narrow secret corridor to a little low room. There the family found the
skeleton of Sir Simon, who had been starved to death by his wife’s brothers. Virginia knelt down beside
the skeleton, and, folding her little hands together, began to pray silently.
Meanwhile, one of the twins was looking out of the window in the little room and suddenly said, “Look!
The old almond-tree has blossoms.”
“Then God has forgiven him,” said Virginia and stood up.
Four days later, a funeral started from Canterville Castle. In a quiet corner of the churchyard, Sir Simon’s
skeleton was buried. When the ceremony was over, Virginia stepped forward and laid a large cross made
of white and pink almond-blossoms on the coffin.
The next morning, Mr. Otis talked to Sir Simon’s descendant, Sir Canterville, about the jewels the ghost
had given to Virginia. Their value was so great that Mr. Otis had scruples about allowing his daughter
to keep them. But Sir Canterville shook his hand and said, “My dear Sir, your charming little daughter
saved my ancestor’s soul. The jewels are hers.”
The jewels were admired by everyone when, in the spring of 1890, Virginia married the Duke of Cheshire.
After their honeymoon, Virginia and her husband went down to Canterville Castle and on the day after
their arrival they walked over to the churchyard. Virginia had brought some lovely roses, which she
strewed upon the grave, and after they had stood by it for some time her husband took her hand.
“You have never told me what happened to you when you were locked up with the ghost.”
“Please don’t ask me, I cannot tell you,” she said, “but I owe Sir Simon a great deal. He made me see
what Life is, and what Death signifies, and why Love is stronger than both.”

REPORTED QUESTIONS
You have seen the different ways to report what is said, however, when we report what people say, we
usually change the tense of the verbs to reflect that we are reporting – not giving direct speech.
This pattern is followed when we report questions and there are also other important changes between
direct questions and reported questions.
A. Yes / No questions
a) Direct question: “Do you like working in teams?” Reported question: He asked if I liked working in teams.
When we report yes/no questions we use “if” or “whether”.
b) Direct question: “Did you enjoy the party?” Reported question: She asked me whether I’d enjoyed
the party.
The tense of the verb changes as it does in reported speech but we don’t use auxiliary verbs. The
word order is the same as in an affirmative sentence.
Notice that the reported questions do not have a question mark at the end.
Mrs. Wilson said to her pupils: “Would you like to do something about disabled people or do you prefer
to learn something about newspapers? We can do both. One group will design some products as you
did last year. Would you like to go and fetch the yearbook, Daniel? You’ll find some information here.
- But what are you doing, Jane? Don’t read this comic in my class. You’re a bad girl. Are you listening
to me now? The other group is going to find out about newspapers. I think I saw an interesting article
in the Mid Sussex Times last month. Can we start tomorrow?

2. Then use some liquid paper to white out what some of the characters say in their speech bubbles.
3. Write new lines with your own version of the story.
4. Do this activity in your notebook.
5. Use the different forms of reported speech.
•• Reporting verbs
In the sentence “James said that he was my neighbour”, said is a reporting verb.
There are other reporting verbs we can use depending on the statement. We can also use the verbs like
“told”, “offered” and “promised”.
∗∗ Told
“My brother is buying a car” said Anne (direct speech) becomes, Anne told me (that) her brother was
buying a car.
Don’t use “told” with “to”: Anne told to me (that) her brother was buying a car, is not correct.
Some reporting verbs may appear in more than one of the following groups because they can be used
in several ways.
a) VERBS FOLLOWED BY “IF” OR “WHETHER”.

...........................................................................................................................................................
When we want to talk about habits or repeated actions in the past which we don’t do in the present.
We use this form:
•• We use “used to” when we refer to things in the past which are no longer true. It can refer to repeated
actions or to a state or situation:
−− He used to play football for the local team, but he’s too old now.
−− That white house over there used to belong to my family. (It belonged to my family in the past, but
not anymore.)
Not: “We are used to go...” or “we use to go...” or “we were used to go...”
∗∗ Sometimes we write it with a final “-d”, sometimes not. Both forms are common, but many people
consider the form with the final “-d” to be incorrect, and you should not use it in exams:
−− It didn’t use to be so crowded in the shops as it is nowadays.
−− I didn’t used to like broccoli when I was younger, but I love it now. (Don’t use this form in
exams.)
∗∗ In very formal styles, we can use the negative form “used not to”:
−− She used not to live as poorly as she does now.
c) In questions
∗∗ The most common form of question is auxiliary “did + use(d) to”. Many people consider the form
with a final “-d” to be incorrect, and you should not use it in exams:
−− I think we met once, a couple of years ago. Did you use to work with Kevin Harris?
−− Didn’t she used to live in the same street as us? (Don’t use this form in written exams.)
PRACTICE

be used to something
be used to doing
Do not confuse “be used to” with the special structure “used to do”. They have different meanings.
Look at the structure again with positive, negative and question sentences:
Subject main verb “be” not used to object
+ I am used to horses.
He is not used to children.
-
We are n’t used to big cities.
? Are you used to her temper?
Note that if the object involves a verb, we use the “-ing” form (-ing form):
−− I am not used to being lied to.
−− He is used to working late.
−− We aren’t used to taking the bus.
−− Are you used to cooking?
Why do we use “-ing” for a verb after “be used to”? Because we always use “-ing” for a verb after
a preposition, and the “to” is a preposition.
∗∗ Use of be used to
The “be used to” expression is for talking about something that is familiar to us or easy for us. For
example:
−− I am used to driving on the left.
It means that it is not a problem for me to drive on the left of the road. I am Japanese. In Japan,
people drive on the left. Now I am living in the USA where people drive on the right. Of course, I
drive on the right in the USA, but when I go to Japan it is easy for me to drive on the left because “I
am used to it”.
Look at these examples:
−− I am used to hard work. −− He isn’t used to living in New York.
−− I am used to working hard. −− Are you used to fast food?
−− He is not used to New York. −− Are you used to eating quickly?
∗∗ Tenses
We can use “be used to” in any tense. We just conjugate the verb “be” in the tense that we need.
Look at these examples:
−− When we lived in Bangkok, we were used to hot weather.
−− I have been used to snakes for a long time.
−− You will soon be used to living alone.
b) “People here are used to hot weather.” They must live in:

a) “Used to” refers to actions and situations in the past which no longer happen or are no longer true.
It always refers to the past:
−− She used to sing in a choir, but she gave it up. (She sang, but she doesn’t sing any more)
b) “Be used to” means “be accustomed to” or “be familiar with”. It can refer to the past, present or
future. We follow “be used to” with a noun phrase, a pronoun or the “-ing” form of a verb:
−− I work in a hospital, so I’m used to long hours. (I am accustomed to / familiar with long
hours.)
−− She lives in a very small village and hates traffic. She’s not used to it.
−− He was a salesman, so he was used to travelling up and down the country. (He was accustomed
to / was familiar with travelling.)
c) We can also say “get used to” or (more formally) become “used to”:
−− University is very different from school, but don’t worry. You’ll soon get used to it. (or, more
formally, You’ll soon become used to it.)
