UNIT 1
READING
Life in the future
The topic of life in the future is one of the very interesting topics for people throughout history. Some
people have imagined that life in the future would be so easy and comfortable. While others have seen
that it would be worse and more difficult than now. I stand for the idea of the first team. I think that life
in the future will be easy and comfortable. This will be obvious in all aspects in life.
First, as for education, people will have better education. This is because of technology. E-books will
replace traditional books, robots will replace teachers, and students will not have to go to schools everyday
as they will study at home through on-line teaching. So even absent students will learn. Students will find
school more interesting.
Second, health will improve. Technology will also play a very important role in that. New medicines will
help people get better. Robots will help doctors and sometimes replace them. Add to that, scientists and
researchers will find out answers to many diseases like AIDS and CANCER. So people will live longer.
Third, housing problem will end. People will build houses under the sea. Also some people will live on the
moon. While others live on flying houses. Everyone will have a place to live in.
Fourth, hunger will stop all over the world. People will grow new types of crops that will be bigger than
now. People will grow everywhere even on the top of buildings.
Fifth, world peace will spread. This is the result of all the previous aspects. The world will have nothing
to fight for. Everyone will have the better education health, house, food; etc. so everyone will be happier
and love will be everywhere.

READING
My predictions
Yesterday, I was thinking about my family’s future and how things would go from now for us, I wonder what
we will have done in many years’ time! I’m working as a journalist at “The New York times” so by the end
of 2020, I will not have written a book yet but an article for that newspaper I know I will have. If I keep
saving money, I will have been able to buy a small house or an apartment. I really want to have my own
place by that year! I will also have improved my driving skills by the end of this year because I want to get
my license in order to drive my new car.
I hope that by 2022, I will have been engaged with my girlfriend so by the year 2023, I will have got married
with her. I will also have learned how to cook by the time I am married. I don’t really like cooking but I
know I have to learn to. And if I talk about children, perhaps by 2024, I will have had my first baby.
By the year 2022, my nephew Rodrigo will have finished the second year of high school. And his sister, who
is a baby now, will not have started kindergarten yet. But she will have begun to have little conversations
with us. And we will all have learned how to make Sylvana feel better when she is crying.
By next year, my sister Cecilia will not have finished the university yet. But she will have made many
contacts to find a good job when she ends her career. And maybe by the year 2022 she will have met the
man who will become her husband.
My brother Alonso will have worked 3 years for the school he just started working for this year. And because
of this new job he will have started studying his master degree and made several new good friends.
I’m sure my mom won’t have got a pet. She says she likes animals but she doesn’t like to clean the mess!
By next year, my father will have been retired so I hope my parents will have taken the vacation they have
been postponing. Although everybody in the family wants to learn to play the piano, nobody will have

UNIT 7
READING
WALTER ELIAS DISNEY
Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5th. 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. His parents had decided to move
to Missouri when he was a child. He grew up on a farm there. As a child he loved drawing pictures of farm
animals. At the age of sixteen he returned to Chicago to study art.
When he was 20 he got a job as a cartoonist. Together with his friend Ubbe Iwerks he created advertisements
for newspapers, magazines and movie theaters. It was then that he decided to make animated movies.
In 1923 Walt Disney moved to Hollywood with his brother Roy because he had thought of setting up a
small movie company in the back of an office. He still wanted to make animated movies and he decided
he needed a cartoon hero.
In 1928 Walt Disney and his friend Ubbe Iwerks came up with the idea of a cartoon mouse. The cartoon
mouse didn’t look like a real mouse. He stood on two legs like a human, he had big eyes and ears and he
wore white gloves on his hands. The artists called him “Mickey”.
Mickey Mouse came to life in the movie “Steamboat Willie”. It was a huge success. Walt Disney himself
performed the voice of Mickey Mouse. People all over the world knew Mickey Mouse. In Japan, he was
called “Miki Kuchi”. In Italy, “Topolino” and in Latin America, he was “Raton Miquelito”.
Mickey Mouse soon had other cartoon friends: the girl mouse Minnie and the duck Donald with his sailor
clothes.
Mickey Mouse stayed successful, but Walt Disney wanted to make long animated movies as well. In the
1937 “Snow White and the seven Dwarfs” was released. It became one of Hollywood’s most successful
movies. It won several awards. After he had made his first animated movie, Disney made other extremely
popular films such as Pinocchio, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan... Movies that
are still popular today.
But Walt Disney wanted more. In 1955 he opened Disneyland near Hollywood. In Disneyland people visited
imaginary places from Disney movies, children met their Disney cartoon friends and went on exciting rides.
People from all over the world came to see it.
In 1 971, 5 years after Walt Disney’s had died, Disney World Florida opened.
Walt Disney may be dead, but his dreams live on through the Walt Disney Company. Today there is
Disneyland in California, Disney World in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland in Japan, Disneyland Paris in France and
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort in China.

UNIT 8
READING

An important book

I was always interested in history when I was at school. The teacher

who took us for history was very friendly. When we were studying
nineteenth-century European history, he used to bring a book of his
own, which he referred to during the lesson. One day he agreed to
lend me this book because he knew of my interest in history.
After I left school that evening, I caught a bus that was going to my
part of the town. The bus I was travelling in became very crowded.
When he reached the stop where I wanted to get off, I had to push
my way off the bus. The bag I was carrying was full of books because I had a lot of homework. After I
got off the bus, I did not go straight home. I went to a library where I often worked in the evening. I took
out the books I needed for my homework. I did not use the book which I had borrowed. I worked in the
library until I had finished my work. While I was walking home, I went into a shop that sold newspapers
and magazines. I bought a magazine which interested me.
When I arrived home, I emptied my school bag. I could not find the book which the history teacher had
lent me.
Immediately I went back to the shop where I had bought the magazine because I might have left the book
there. Then I ran to the library I had been working at. I went to the table where I had been sitting. The
history book I had lost was not there.
Next morning, I went to the head office of the bus company. I asked the official who was in charge of lost
property to help me. I told him the time at which I had got off the bus. He could not find my book. After
I left the bus company officers, I went to school. I was very worried when I lost the book because I did not
have enough money to buy another one. I arrived at school very late. I did not want to see the teacher
who had lent me the book because he might ask me about it. Unfortunately, I passed him while I was going
to my classroom. He spoke to me: “Yesterday, you did not take that book you asked me to lend you. I’ll
give it to you when I see you for the third lesson.”
I felt very foolish and very happy.

GRAMMAR FOCUS
¾¾ ‌NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
Look at this sentence.
My grandfather, who is 87, goes swimming every day.
“who is 87” is a non -defining relative clause. It adds extra information to the sentence. If we take the
clause out of the sentence, the sentence still has the same meaning.

Look at some more examples:

a) M‌ y eldest son, whose work takes him all over the world, is in Hong Kong at the moment.
b) ‌The film, which stars Tom Carter, is released on Friday.
c) ‌The car, which can reach speeds of over 300 km/ph., costs over $ 500,000.

In the first sentence, it is clear which son is being talked about and the relative clause provides extra
information. In the second sentence, the speaker thinks you know which film you are talking about, and
the information about Tom Carter is just something interesting. In the third sentence, the speaker thinks
you already know which car is being discussed. The information about the speed is just for interest.

1. Complete the sentences.

a) Taylor has a new car, ................................... is twice as big as his old one.
b) We walked as far as the waterfall, ................................... we stopped for a picnic.
c) The new stadium, ................................... can hold over 100,000 people, opened last week.

READING

I love Norway!
My name is Thomas; I’m living in Norway for two years as an exchange student
with a friend called Sara. We live with a Norwegian family. James, who is thirty-
three years old, is an architect and Marie, who is a dentist, is twenty-nine years
old. They have a daughter who is one -year-old and her name is Elin.
The house is quite large. It has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen,
a study, a living room, a dining room, a special games room and a big front and back garden. My favorite
room is my bedroom. I love it because it is the only room in the house where I can lock myself away from
the rest of the world. After a long hard day, all I want to do is go up to my bedroom and listen to music,
or lie down, unwind and watch a bit of T.V. or maybe even a relaxing film.
Anyway, the last two months have been exciting. I’m starting to adjust to my new life in Norway reasonably
well. Although I can’t yet tell you everything.
One thing I’ve noticed here, which has required a fair bit of adjustment, is that almost everything is backwards
here! Seriously! Here are just a few things to which I’ve had to adjust:

•• They drive on the right instead of the left. This is a problem because I instinctively look the wrong direction
before crossing the road and it’s not easy to break the habit.
•• They have both Norwegian and English TV shows. They put Norwegian subtitles on the English shows
and no subtitles on the Norwegian shows.
•• Norwegians take their shoes off at the door and don’t wear them inside.
•• By the time someone turns 15 -16 years old in Norway; they are fairly independent from their parents.
Some people move out at that age and get their own apartment. There’s probably more, but I can’t
remember them all.

It started snowing here a few days ago, though it’s still a little warm and it melts away during the afternoon.
I’m looking forward to the ski season starting in the next few weeks.
At school, I took Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History classes, Spanish, Art and Philosophy - for which I
received half a credit in global studies. I’m learning a lot here, as well as to succeed in another culture. I now
know the world is my community and have a much deeper understanding of both myself and others.

•• When we want to say what somebody said we use REPORTED SPEECH also called INDIRECT SPEECH.

•• We can report what somebody said in two ways:

We can repeat the same speaker’s words, as the example:

−− ‌Sarah said, “I’m not well today. I won’t go to school.”

We can use our own words, as the example:

−− ‌Sarah said she wasn’t well so she wouldn’t go to school.

UNIT 11
REPORTED STATEMENTS
What is a statement?
A statement is always a declaration of something, it can be an affirmation or a negation.

Direct Statement Reported Statement

He said, “I am sick.” He said that he was sick.

When we report statements:

•• We usually introduce reported statements with “reporting verbs” such as “say” or “tell”:
a) He said (that)...
b) He told me (that)...

•• We can say “He said that...” or “He said...”, both are possible. “He said that...” is more formal.

•• When we use our own words to report speech, there are one or two things that we sometimes
change:
a) P‌ ronouns may need to change to reflect a different perspective.
b) ‌Tense sometimes has to go back one tense (eg, present becomes past) - this is called backshift.

Backshift of tenses
from to
Simple Present Simple Past
Simple Past
Present Perfect Past Perfect
Past Perfect
will would

Progressive forms
am / are / is was / were
was / were
has been had been
had been

Take a look at this example:

−− D‌ irect statement : He said, “I am sick.”
−− ‌Reported statement : He said (that) he was sick.

58 / 4TH. GRADE ENGLISH

UNIT 11
There are sometimes other things too that we may need to change, such as time or place. Look at these
examples:

Pronoun change Tense change Time change

Direct statement Jane said, “I was sick yesterday”

Reported statement Jane said (that) She had been sick the day before.

Tense change Place change

Direct statement She said, “It is hot in here.”

Reported statement She said (that) It was hot in there.

•• In imperative forms, we use these forms:

−− ‌“Keep calm!” he said. (direct)
−− ‌He told me to keep calm. (indirect) ⇒ The tense don’t change.

∗∗ ‌This is how we make reported imperative sentences:

Subject + tell / ask + (not) + to + infinitive

−− ‌He told me to call him. (He said: “Call me!”)

−− ‌He told me NOT to call him. (He said: “Don’t call me!”)
−− ‌She asked him to cook dinner. (She said: “Cook dinner, please”)

Look at the table below:

Today That day

Yesterday The day before

The day before yesterday Two days before

Tomorrow The next day / The following day

The day after tomorrow In two days’ time

Next week / month / year... The following week / month / year...

REPORTED SPEECH - MODALS

4TH. GRADE

HE SAID HE COULD BE THE BEST!!!!!

SPEAKING
Do you remember the last class? Using the information you have written in your
homework, tell it to your partner.
Some students will present their works to the class.

In the situation you have a modal verb in your speech:

REPORTED SPEECH WITH MODALS

Reported speech with modal verbs work in the same way as in statements, but there are some exceptions
as well, so that’s why it’s important to look at the rules.
So here’s a simple example:
“I can’t eat seafood”. He said he couldn’t eat seafood.
Look at this chart about reporting modal verbs:
Direct speech Reported speech
can (ability, present) could
can (ability, future) would be able to
may (possibility) might
may (permission, present) could
may (permission, future) would be allowed to
must (obligation, present) must / had to
must (obligation, future) must / would have to
needn’t (necessity, present) didn’t have to / didn’t need to
shall (future time) would
will would
shall (offers, suggestions) should
should should

For example: Must  change to  Had to

−− “‌ You must wear your seatbelt,” mom said. ⇒ My mom said I had to wear my seatbelt.
−− ‌She said, “You must work tomorrow.” ⇒ She said I had to work tomorrow.

EXTRA: Turn on the lights. Get up! What a shot!

ENGLISH 4TH. GRADE / 63

UNIT 12
Below are some common ways of reporting these speeches.

Reported Requests / Commands

When we put direct commands or requests into indirect speech we usually follow the below structure:
a) We use introductory verbs: order, ask, tell, want and request, etc.
b) We use indirect objects after those introductory verbs.
c) The command or request in direct speech takes the infinitive form.
Examples:
a) Direct : He said: “Exercise regularly.”
Indirect : He asked me to exercise regularly.
Indirect : He wanted me to exercise regularly.
Indirect : He told me to exercise regularly.
Indirect : He requested that I exercised regularly.

b) Direct : “Don’t turn off the lights.”

Indirect : He asked not to turn off the lights.
Indirect : He ordered not to turn off the lights.

c) Direct : The sign says: “Don’t drink and drive.”

Indirect : The sign says not to drink and drive.
Indirect : The sign asks not to drink and drive.
Indirect : The sign requests not to drink and drive.
Indirect : The sign said not to drink and drive.
Indirect : The sign commands not to drink and drive.
Indirect : The sign screams at us not to drink and drive.

d) My Father : “Don’t be late.”

Indirect : My father warned us not to be late.
Indirect : My father asked us not to be late.

INDIRECT SPEECH EXCLAMATIONS

Exclamations become statements in indirect speech.
Examples:
a) Direct : Shannon said, “What a pity!”
Indirect : Shannon said that it was a pity.

b) Direct : Hanna said, “Oh! It is impossible!”

Indirect : Hanna said that it was impossible.

c) Direct : Danny said, “What a lovely day!”

Indirect : Danny said that it was a lovely day.

“What a shot!”
Somebody said it was a (great) shot.

3. Read this article then find the underlined sentences and change them into reported speech.
I have a friend who is afraid of spiders. This isn’t very unusual; a lot of people are afraid of spiders. I
don’t really like spiders much myself. I don’t mind them if I see them outside in the garden, as long
as they’re not too big.
This is quite normal, I think. But my friend isn’t afraid of spiders in any normal way. She isn’t just afraid
of spiders, she is totally, completely and utterly terrified of them. When my friend sees a spider, she
doesn’t just go “Uurgghh!” or run away or ask someone else to get rid of the horrible creepy-crawly.
No, she screams as loud as she possibly can. She screams so loud that her neighbours worry about
her and think about calling the police. When she sees a spider, she shivers all over and sometimes she
freezes completely – she can’t move at all because she is so terrified. Sometimes she even faints.
But my friend had a surprise for me when we met for coffee last week.
−− ‌“Guess what?” she asked me.
−− ‌“What?” I said.
−− ‌“I’ve got a new pet!”

a special doctor. A psychiatrist. This psychiatrist specialises in phobias – helping people who have

REPORTED SPEECH - QUESTIONS

4TH. GRADE

•• Read the following text and solve the exercises proposed.

About ten minutes later, the bell rang for dinner, and, as Virginia did not come down, Mrs. Otis sent up
one of the servants. After a little time he returned and said that he could not find Miss Virginia anywhere.
So, the whole family started looking for her.
The hours passed, but they could find no trace of Virginia. So, after dinner, Mr. Otis ordered them all
to bed, saying that nothing more could be done that night, and that he would contact Scotland Yard in
the morning. Just when everybody was about to leave the dining room, the clock struck midnight, and
when the last stroke sounded, a secret door opened in the wall and in that door stood Virginia with a
little box in her hand. Everybody ran up to her.
“Good heavens! Child, where have you been?” said Mr. Otis, rather angrily, as he thought she had been
playing a trick on them.
“Papa,” said Virginia quietly, “I have been with the ghost. He is dead, and you must come and see him.
He had been very nasty, but he was really sorry for all that he had done, and he gave me this box of
beautiful jewels before he died.”
Then she led the others down a narrow secret corridor to a little low room. There the family found the
skeleton of Sir Simon, who had been starved to death by his wife’s brothers. Virginia knelt down beside
the skeleton, and, folding her little hands together, began to pray silently.
Meanwhile, one of the twins was looking out of the window in the little room and suddenly said, “Look!
The old almond-tree has blossoms.”
“Then God has forgiven him,” said Virginia and stood up.
Four days later, a funeral started from Canterville Castle. In a quiet corner of the churchyard, Sir Simon’s
skeleton was buried. When the ceremony was over, Virginia stepped forward and laid a large cross made
of white and pink almond-blossoms on the coffin.
The next morning, Mr. Otis talked to Sir Simon’s descendant, Sir Canterville, about the jewels the ghost
had given to Virginia. Their value was so great that Mr. Otis had scruples about allowing his daughter
to keep them. But Sir Canterville shook his hand and said, “My dear Sir, your charming little daughter
saved my ancestor’s soul. The jewels are hers.”
The jewels were admired by everyone when, in the spring of 1890, Virginia married the Duke of Cheshire.
After their honeymoon, Virginia and her husband went down to Canterville Castle and on the day after
their arrival they walked over to the churchyard. Virginia had brought some lovely roses, which she
strewed upon the grave, and after they had stood by it for some time her husband took her hand.
“You have never told me what happened to you when you were locked up with the ghost.”
“Please don’t ask me, I cannot tell you,” she said, “but I owe Sir Simon a great deal. He made me see
what Life is, and what Death signifies, and why Love is stronger than both.”

REPORTED QUESTIONS
You have seen the different ways to report what is said, however, when we report what people say, we
usually change the tense of the verbs to reflect that we are reporting – not giving direct speech.
This pattern is followed when we report questions and there are also other important changes between
direct questions and reported questions.

A. Yes / No questions
a) Direct question: “Do you like working in teams?” Reported question: He asked if I liked working in teams.
When we report yes/no questions we use “if” or “whether”.

b) Direct question: “Did you enjoy the party?” Reported question: She asked me whether I’d enjoyed
the party.
The tense of the verb changes as it does in reported speech but we don’t use auxiliary verbs. The
word order is the same as in an affirmative sentence.

70 / 4TH. GRADE ENGLISH

UNIT 13
B. Questions with a question word
a) Direct question: “What time does the train leave?” Reported question: He asked what time the
train left.
When there is a question word (what, where, why, who, when, how) we use that question word in
the reported question but there is no auxiliary verb and the word order is like an affirmative sentence
(“what time the train left” not He asked me what time did the train leave.)
Look at some more examples:
−− ‌ irect question :
D “Who did you see?”
−− ‌Reported question : She asked me who I’d seen.
−− ‌Direct question : “Where did you go to school?”
−− ‌Reported question : He asked me where I’d gone to school.
−− ‌Direct question : “Why are you crying?”
−− ‌Reported question : She asked him why he was crying.

Notice that the reported questions do not have a question mark at the end.

1. Read the following text and underline the questions:

Mrs. Wilson said to her pupils: “Would you like to do something about disabled people or do you prefer

did last year. Would you like to go and fetch the yearbook, Daniel? You’ll find some information here.
- But what are you doing, Jane? Don’t read this comic in my class. You’re a bad girl. Are you listening
to me now? The other group is going to find out about newspapers. I think I saw an interesting article
in the Mid Sussex Times last month. Can we start tomorrow?

UNIT 17
Warning:
a) In statements:
∗∗ ‌The form “used to” does not change.
∗∗ ‌We do not use the verb “be” before it.
∗∗ ‌It always refers to past time:
−− ‌We used to go to the seaside every summer when I was a kid.

Not: “We are used to go...” or “we use to go...” or “we were used to go...”

b) In negative: didn’t use to + verb

∗∗ ‌The negative of “used to” is most commonly “didn’t use(d) to”.

∗∗ ‌Sometimes we write it with a final “-d”, sometimes not. Both forms are common, but many people
consider the form with the final “-d” to be incorrect, and you should not use it in exams:
−− ‌It didn’t use to be so crowded in the shops as it is nowadays.
−− ‌I didn’t used to like broccoli when I was younger, but I love it now. (Don’t use this form in
exams.)

∗∗ ‌In very formal styles, we can use the negative form “used not to”:
−− ‌She used not to live as poorly as she does now.

c) In questions
∗∗ ‌The most common form of question is auxiliary “did + use(d) to”. Many people consider the form
with a final “-d” to be incorrect, and you should not use it in exams:
−− ‌I think we met once, a couple of years ago. Did you use to work with Kevin Harris?
−− ‌Didn’t she used to live in the same street as us? (Don’t use this form in written exams.)

¾¾ ‌BE USED TO:

be used to something
be used to doing

Be “used to” is an expression. It is not a tense. If I say:

−− ‌“I am used to Thailand”, it is like saying “I am accustomed to Thailand.”

Do not confuse “be used to” with the special structure “used to do”. They have different meanings.

ENGLISH 4TH. GRADE / 91

UNIT 17
∗∗ ‌Structure of be used to
The structure of be used to is:
subject + main verb “be” + used to + object

Look at the structure again with positive, negative and question sentences:
Subject main verb “be” not used to object
+ I am used to horses.
He is not used to children.
-
We are n’t used to big cities.
? Are you used to her temper?

Note that if the object involves a verb, we use the “-ing” form (-ing form):
−− ‌I am not used to being lied to.
−− ‌He is used to working late.
−− ‌We aren’t used to taking the bus.
−− ‌Are you used to cooking?

Why do we use “-ing” for a verb after “be used to”? Because we always use “-ing” for a verb after
a preposition, and the “to” is a preposition.

∗∗ ‌Use of be used to
The “be used to” expression is for talking about something that is familiar to us or easy for us. For
example:
−− ‌I am used to driving on the left.

It means that it is not a problem for me to drive on the left of the road. I am Japanese. In Japan,
people drive on the left. Now I am living in the USA where people drive on the right. Of course, I
drive on the right in the USA, but when I go to Japan it is easy for me to drive on the left because “I
am used to it”.
Look at these examples:
−− ‌I am used to hard work. −− ‌He isn’t used to living in New York.
−− ‌I am used to working hard. −− ‌Are you used to fast food?
−− ‌He is not used to New York. −− ‌Are you used to eating quickly?

∗∗ ‌Tenses
We can use “be used to” in any tense. We just conjugate the verb “be” in the tense that we need.
Look at these examples:
−− ‌When we lived in Bangkok, we were used to hot weather.
−− ‌I have been used to snakes for a long time.
−− ‌You will soon be used to living alone.
