TIME OF TENSION
At the dawn of the 1940s, the world was at
war. Even after World War II ended in 1945,
the peace was fragile. The United States and
the SovietUnion began to build up nuclear
weapons and seek military and economic allies
around the world. Although neither fought
each other directly, a state of hostile tension
known Cold War existed between these
as the
two superpowers for the next forty years.
In the shadow of the Holocaust and the
atomic bomb, the dominant mood of the
1940s was disillusionment —
a loss of faith
in everything from systems of government to
the methods and purposes of creativity. Few
artists turned outward to society, as they had
done after World War I, criticizing it or Pop Art pictures exploded onto the
