Functions and Relations Name______________________ Date ______

Goal: To graph relations and to identify functions.

Relation: A pairing of input and output values

Domain: The set of input values for a relations (x-values)
Range: The set of output values (y-variables)
Function: A relations which each element of the domain corresponds with exactly one element of the
ONE-TO-ONE range is a one-to-one function

Vertical-line test: If any vertical line passes through more than one point on the graph of a relation, the relation
is NOT a function.

Function rule : An equation that represents the output in terms of its input value
(in function
notation) y = 3x + 2 f(x) = 3x + 2 <—- say, “f of x”
output input
independent x, represents the input of a function
variable:
dependent Represents the output of a function.
variable:

1. Solve the equation for the given domain. Then write the solution set.
(a) −2x + y = −3 Domain = { -1,012 }

Solution set :

{ ( -1 ,

}
2. Identity the domain and range
a. {(100,5),(120,5),(140,6), b. c.
(160,6),(180,12)}

6. Writing and Evaluating a Function: The cost of pizza at the Tokyo Olympic games is ______.
is a delivery fee of$1.75
_______. (a) What function rule models the total cost of the number of pizzas
delivered? (b) What is the cost of five pizzas. Use function notation for both.
C. → cost of pizza p→
# of pizzas

Clp)=l2p -11.75 C. (5) = 61.75

C. (57--1215)+1.75
= 60+1.75
= 61.75
