Introductory Lecture: Textbook options, MLS Website Review, course outline review
There are:
- online resources and a good textbook
- Labs
- Office hours (in-person Mon, online on Thursday mornings)
Note: This class really depends on repetition and practice of the material to succeed.
Expected student conduct:
- Read the syllabus
- Do not be disruptive in class
- Do not grade grub (excessive questioning on judgement on tests, no asking for grade
bumps for progression requirements)
o There is a marking guide that allows you to see what you are getting marks on
o If you feel there is marker error, there will be a designated day to discuss
- No academic misconduct

MLS Overview:
- There is an announcements area and a calendar tab that shows you deadlines of all
assignments
- There will be links posted to the online optional labs
- There are summary slides for all the chapters that will be discussed in class
- Homework questions and exercises will also be done in class
- McGraw Hill Connect
o Click the McGraw Hill Connect Launch when registering for the first time
- There are smart book assignments that is an adaptive learning technology that allows
you to test your learning, especially for multiple choice questions
- There are also non-gradable concept overview videos that goes over difficult sections of
the course
- The professor also has his own videos which are basically the same content explained
during class, therefore if you miss class, you can watch that corresponding video. There
are old videos and new updated videos being posted weekly.

Assignments:
− McGraw Hill Connect assignments: there is a check my work button which you can use
to check you work and correct it before submitting
− These assignments are done weekly, connect is worth 10%
− There are also Excel assignments and Data Analytic Assignments, which are worth 7%
− There is also the accounting cycle project which is worth 3%, it is a time-consuming
assignment
o There will be a mini version of this during the midterm
− There is also a ratio project which is towards the end of the term

Midterms:
- There are multiple previous midterms that are available to practice
- There are also marking guides to show you what marks will be given for
- There could be similar questions on the midterm with the numbers and transactions
changed

Checklist:
- There are weekly checklists to help you stay organized on MLS

Gradebook:
- The gradebook on MLS is always right, the Mc Graw Hill may give you the wrong mark
- Thus, your official grade will always be on gradebook

Zoom meetings:
- Under the zoom meeting tab, there will be links posted for the office hours of professors

Course Outline:
- You can go to the other section on MW at 5:30 if you are unable to come at 11:30
- Do not buy a used textbook!!!
- Optional labs information can be found here, where you can ask questions
- There is 3% for attending speaker series, for our section will usually be on Monday
- If you cannot attend the midterm, please let the professor know well in advance
- There is a schedule at the end of the outline that shows you which exercises you should
be doing on your own and which ones will be taking up in class
- All assignment deadlines are also included
Textbook options:
- If you buy the physical textbook through the Laurier bookstore, you also get an e-book
(available for one year), and a connect code that gives access to all the homework and
assignments online
- Or you can just buy the online version, however, note that the exam is open source,
therefore you can bring your notes and the textbook. So, if you buy a digital textbook
you cannot bring it to the exam.
- You can also bring the old exams or selected printed pages of the textbook to the exam
- If for financial reasons, you cannot purchase the textbook at all, then you can contact
the professor and manual assignments will be provided instead of the Connect
assignments
- How to register:
o Click on the McGraw Hill connect click on MLS
o Log in with your school email
o If you bought the textbook, you should have a connect code, which you should
input.
o Do you press buy it if you already bought the textbook, you should have a
connect code already
