Q1. List one reason why learning the alphabet was so important to women like
Rashsundari Devi, Ramabai and Rokeya. (NCERT)NTB

ANSWER-

1. Rashsundari Devi, Ramabai and Rokeya were ambitious women.


2. They wanted to make an impact on the society. They wanted to make an impact
on the society.
3. Ramabai could do this through the mission the setup which is still active today.
4. Rashsundari Devi and Rokeya went on to become writers. Rokeya’s education
had an impact on the stories that she wrote which imagined places where
women had the freedom to study, work and realize their dreams.
5. RashsundariDevi, through her own writing could give an opportunity to the
entire world to know about the condition of women these days.

Q2. What is Census? Mention its importance. (NTB)

ANSWER-
The Census refers to the count of the total number of people living in a country. It is
conducted after every ten years. In Census the information related to age, material
status, number of birth and death in a year, education and occupation are collected.

IMPORTANCE
1. It helps to gather information about the people living in India about their age,
education, occupation, working/non- working population, ratio of literate/illiterate
male and female.
2. It tells us how a country has progressed.
3. The government gets to know what is needed to be done for further improvement
or progress and what steps are to be taken in different spheres like health and
education.
4. It also helps us understand where our country stands in the world.

Q3. Why are girls of certain communities forced to leave school? (NTB)

ANSWER-
Reason for girls dropping out of school – Dalit, Adivasi and Muslim communities are:
1. Lack of proper schools and teachers:
In many parts of our country especially rural and poor areas, proper schools and
regular teachers are not available
2. Inaccessible:
If the school is not close to people’s home, and buses are not available for
transport, people will not be willing to send their girls to schools.
3. Unaffordable:
Many people are poor and unable to pay the cost of education. In such cases
boys are given preference and girls are retained at home.
4. Discrimination: Discrimination and resultant harassment by teachers and
classmates is also a reason for dropping out. An example is the Dalit writer,
Omprakash Valmiki's experience.

Q4. How has the campaigning become an important part of Women’s


Movement? Give three examples of new laws which have been passed due to
campaigning? (NTB)

ANSWER-

Campaigns have helped in fighting discrimination and violence against women.


Campaigns have also led to new laws being passed. Any women who faces physical
and mental violence within their homes can now receive protection.

Passing of new laws:

1. Law against Domestic Violence:


New laws have been passed because of campaigns. In 2006, a law regarding
domestic violence was passed. This law gave legal protection to women who
faced physical and mental torture at home.
2. Guidelines against Sexual harassment: 
In 1997, The Supreme Court passed guidelines to protect women from sexual
harassment at workplace and at educational institutes.
3. Amendment in Dowry laws: In the 1980’s, there was a nationwide campaign
against dowry deaths. Women groups spoke against the failure to act against
the people responsible for dowry deaths. They took to the street, approached
courts etc. This issue hence gained importance and became an important
matter in the newspapers and in the society, hence leading to change in the
dowry laws.

Q5. How can education help overcome gender bias? (HOTS)(NTB)

ANSWER-

1. The role of education is vital for fighting gender bias as it provides opportunities
to girl to become independent, provides scope for economic freedom, fight for
seeking justice.
2. An educated woman work force also helps in fighting against various forms of
violence against women.
3. Education makes women aware of their rights and legal protection against
injustice.
4. It is said that once a woman is educated the entire family is educated. It helps in
improved upbringing of children. Education will also help fight against the
gender stereotypes prevalent in our society.
5. Many successful women Laxmi Lakra, Kiran Bedi, Saina Nehwal are some
examples to prove that women can succeed in every sphere, if given
opportunity.
