Swine influenza (also called swine flu, hog flu and pig flu) is an infection of a host
28

animal by any one of several specific types of microscopic organisms called “swine
influenza virus”. A swine influenza virus (SIV) is any strain of the influenza family of
viruses that is usually hosted by (is endemic in) pigs. As of 2009, the known SIV strains
are the influenza C virus and the subtypes of the influenza A virus known as H1N1,
H1N2, H3N1, H3N2 and H2N3. Swine influenza is common in pigs in the mid-western
United States (and occasionally in other states), Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe
(including the UK, Sweden and Italy), Kenya, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and other
parts of eastern Asia.
Transmission of swine influenza virus from pigs to humans is not common and does not
always cause human influenza, often only resulting in the production of antibodies in the
blood. The meat of the animal poses no risk of transmitting the virus when properly
cooked. If transmission does cause human influenza, it is called zoonotic swine flu.
People who work with pigs, especially people with intense exposures, are at increased
risk of catching swine flu. In the mid-20th century, identification of influenza subtypes
became possible, this allows accurate diagnosis of transmission to humans. Since then,
fifty confirmed transmissions have been recorded, rarely, these strains of swine flu can
pass from human to human. In humans, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of
influenza and of influenza-like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle
pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort.
The 2009 flu outbreak in humans, known as “swine flu’, is due to a new strain of
influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that contains genes closely related to swine influenza.
The origin of this new strain is unknown. However, the World Organization for Animal
Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in pigs. This strain can be
transmitted from human to human, and causes the normal symptoms of influenza.
Question 45. What is the main topic of the passage?

D: The characteristics of swine flu
Question 46. A swine influenza virus is ________.

Question 47. Where is the swine influenza not common?

Question 48. Which statement is NOT supported by the passage?
A: Swine influenza is not commonly transmitted from pigs to humans.
B: When properly cooked, pork cannot transmit the swine influenza virus
C: Any person who works with pigs can catch swine influenza
D: Transmission of swine influenza virus can produce antibodies in the blood.

North Americans are familiar with the many “person on the street” interviews on local
television news shows. While such interviews can be highly entertaining, they are not
necessarily an accurate indication of public opinion. First, they reflect the opinions of
only those people who appear at a certain location. Thus, such examples can be biased in
favor of commuters, middle-class shoppers, or factory workers, depending on which area
the news people select. Second, television interviews tend to attract outgoing people who
are willing to appear on the air, while they frighten away others who may
feel intimidated by a camera. A survey must be based on a precise, representative
sampling if it is to genuinely reflect a broad range of the population.
In preparing to conduct a survey, sociologists must exercise great care in the wording of
questions. An effective survey question must be simple and clear enough for people to
understand it. It must also be specific enough so that there are no problems in
interpreting the results. Even questions that are less structured must be carefully phrased
in order to elicit the type of information desired. Surveys can be indispensable sources of
information, but only if the sampling is done properly and the questions are worded
accurately.
There are two main forms of surveys: the interview and the questionnaire. Each of these
forms of survey research has its advantages. An interviewer can obtain a high response
rate because people find it more difficult to turn down a personal request for an interview
than to throw away a written questionnaire. In addition, an interviewer can go beyond
written questions and probe for a subject’s underlying feelings and reasons. However,
questionnaires have the advantage of being cheaper and more consistent.

Marian Anderson’s brilliant singing career began at age six when she sang spirituals at
the Union Baptist Church in her hometown of Philadelphia. She toured Europe in the
1920s, drawing vast acclaim. However, when she returned to the United States she was
still barred from performing on the American operatic stage. After she was prevented
from singing in Washington’s segregated Constitution Hall in 1939, Eleanor Roosevelt
intervened and arranged for Miss Anderson to perform at the Lincoln Memorial. A
crowd of 75,000 people came to watch her sing before the Memorial. Marian Anderson’s
beautiful contralto voice broke down racial barriers, showing white Americans that
blacks had a profound contribution to make to America’s cultural life.
Eventually, in 1955, she became the first African-American singer to perform at New
York’s Metropolitan Opera. In her many years of touring, she had to endure a racism that
forced her to enter concert halls and hotels through service entrances. Her grace under
