SEQUENCE AND
SERIES
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session, the
students should be able to:
❏ define arithmetic sequence and
series,
❏ recognize the common difference
in an arithmetic sequence,
❏ find the nth term of an arithmetic
sequence,
❏ find the sum of the first n terms of
an arithmetic sequence, and
❏ apply arithmetic sequence and
series concepts to solve real world
problems.

How pattern can be applied in reality?
The Koch snowflake is a fractal curve, also known as the
Koch island, which was first described by Helge von Koch in
1904. It is built by starting with an equilateral triangle,
removing the inner third of each side, building
another equilateral triangle at the location where the side was
removed, and then repeating the process indefinitely.

ARITHMETIC SERIES
When you add up terms of an arithmetic sequences
FORMULA 1: If the first and last terms are given
Example 1
Find the sum of the first 30 terms of an arithmetic
progression with first term 8 and common
difference 0.5.
Sequences and Series
Example 2
Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 between 100
and 1000.
Example 3
An arithmetic sequence has first term 5 and
common difference 10. If the sum of all the terms is
720, how many terms are in the sequence?
Example 4
An 81-meter rope is cut into n pieces of increasing lengths that form an
arithmetic sequence with a common difference of d meters. Given that the
lengths of the shortest and the longest pieces are 1.5 m and 7.5 m respectively,
find the values of n and d.

A small business sells $20,000 worth of sports
memorabilia during its first year. The owner of the
business has set a goal of increasing annual sales by
$15,000 each year for 19 years. Assuming that this
goal is met, find the total sales during the first 20
years this business is in operation.
