Research Report: Open Dustbin in Badda

Abstract

This research report investigates the prevalence and impact of open dustbins in Badda, Dhaka
city, Bangladesh. The study examines the reasons behind the widespread use of open dustbins, assesses
their environmental health implications, and suggests potential solutions to mitigate the associated
problems. The data was gathered through field of surveys, interviews, and an analysis of existing
literature on waste management in urban areas.

1. Introduction:

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. With
a population exceeding 8 million, the city faces significant challenges in waste management. Open
Dustbins, which refer to uncovered containers used for the collection of household and commercial
waste, are a common sight in Dhaka. This report aims to shed light on the issues related to the open
dustbin of an area in the city.

2. Methodology

2.1. Field Surveys:

 We have selected Badda City in Dhaka.

 Conducted virtual inspections and documented the type and condition of dustbins.

2.2. Interviews:

 5 residents and 1 waste management professional were interviewed to gather

qualitative data on their perception of open dustbins.

2.3 Literature Review:

 Reviewed relevant studies and reports on waste management in urban areas,

specifically focusing on Dhaka.

3. Prevalence of Open Dustbins

The field surveys revealed that open dustbins are extensively used across Dhaka city. In
residential areas of Badda, approximately 75% of households rely on open dustbins for waste disposal,
while in commercial areas, this figure is over 90%.
4. Reasons for the Use of Open Dustbins

4.1 Lack of Proper Waste Management Infrastructure:

 In Badda, lacks formal waste collection services, leading residents and businesses to
resort to open dustbins as a makeshift solution.

4.2 Affordability and Accessibility:

 Open dustbins are more affordable and readily available compared to covered
alternatives, making them a popular choice among low-income households and small
businesses.

5. Environmental and Health Implications

5.1 Environment Pollution:

 Open dustbins contribute to the dispersal of litter, leading to soil and water
pollution. Plastic waste, in particular, poses a significant threat to the
environment.

Dhaka City: A Comprehensive Review. Journal of Environmental Science,
Toxicology and Food Technology, 14(3), 50-57.

5.2. Vector-Borne Diseases:

Open dustbins attract pests like flies, rodents, and stray animals, increasing the risk
of vector-borne diseases in the community.

6.Proposed Solutions

6.1. Improved Waste Management Infrastructure:

The government should invest in upgrading waste collection and disposal systems,
ensuring comprehensive coverage across the city.
