Keeping Promises
One of the themes in the short story Rumpelstiltskin is keeping promises. This theme is portrayed through what some of the characters did. For example, when Lisa was directed by the King to spin straw into gold, Lisa promised to give Rumpelstiltskin her necklace and her ring for helping her. Later, when Lisa did not have anything else to give, she promised the little man to give her first-born child. However, Lisa did not keep her promise. Another example is the King. As compared to Lisa, the King kept his promise. For example, he did marry Lisa after Lisa managed to spin straw into gold. In fact, he made her the queen and let her parents stay in the castle. In addition, this theme is also portrayed through Rumpelstiltskin. Rumpelstilstkin kept his promise to help Lisa spin straw into gold provided that Lisa gave him what he wanted. Although it was conditional, it cannot be denied that he still kept his promise. In fact, at the end of the story, as promised, he vanished into thin air when Lisa managed to guess his name. From these examples, it can be said that the theme keeping promises is portrayed through the characters in the story.
