Part 2
Read the text and the questions below. For each question, choose the correct
answer, A, B or C.

The Maker Movement

If your computer stopped working, would you try to repair it? If you needed a desk, would you
make it yourself? The answer is probably ‘no’ to both questions. Most of us would take our
computers to a repair shop or buy a new desk from a furniture shop. However, makers would be
happy to do the job themselves.

Makers love learning how things work and they believe that it’s best if you repair or make things
yourself. People have always enjoyed making things and DIY (‘do it yourself’) has been a popular
hobby for a long time. However, things began to change with the growth of the internet, which
made it easier for people to communicate and share ideas. They formed online groups with similar
interests, like electronics, woodwork or bicycles and talked about their experiences and the best
way to do things.

At the same time as the internet and technology have become more important in our lives, the
maker movement has grown too. There are now maker groups in many schools and universities –
and ‘maker spaces’ have appeared in cities all around the world from Berlin to Bogota. These are
workshops and laboratories which are open to the public and often free to use. While most maker
spaces have traditional tools for making and repairing things, some even have more up-to-date
technology like 3D printers.

Maker fairs, or ‘hackathons’, where makers get together and show each other their projects, have
also become incredibly popular. For example, at a recent ‘mini’ maker fair in Toronto, more than
10,000 people attended. Children at the fair showed off boats that they’d built themselves,
computer codes that they’d written and strange science experiments that they’d carried out. The
fair was a huge success and everyone had a lot of fun.

So if you want to start a new hobby that’s both fun and helps you learn new things, why not
become a maker? You won’t have to get anything repaired in a shop ever again!

Part 3
Read the letter from Louise to her friend Michelle. Choose the correct answer,
A, B or C.
Dear Louise,
It’s been such a long time since I last wrote to you. I’m afraid I’ve been really busy and I
haven’t had much spare time. In your last letter, you told me that you were going to
start a new school. I hope you’re enjoying it and that you’ve made lots of new friends.
I’ve also started at a new school this year but it hasn’t been easy. There are some good
points … I didn’t have to worry about making new friends because lots of students from
my old school went there too. I also really like the school because it’s got excellent
facilities, like the gym and the library. It’s even got a theatre, which we can use for plays
and concerts.
But … the thing that I don’t like is the journey to school. I wish it wasn’t so long! Every
day I have to get up at 7 o’clock in order to get to the bus stop for quarter to eight. Then
I spend an hour on the bus while it goes round all the villages to collect the children. I’m
exhausted before I get to school … and I have to make the same journey home as well!
I had a problem last Tuesday because I didn’t hear my alarm clock and I missed the
bus. My mum and dad had already gone to work and I only woke up when I heard the
phone ringing. It was the school secretary and he wanted to know why I wasn’t there. I
had to phone my dad and ask him to come and take me to school. He had to miss an
important meeting so he wasn’t happy.
I’ve decided to ask my parents to buy me a bicycle. I know they won’t want to get me
one but I’m going to explain that if I have a bike, I’ll be able to get to school much
quicker because it’s not actually very far. Let’s see what they say!
Please write to me soon and tell me all about your school.
Lots of love,
Michelle
