Time Management

This document discusses the relationship between time management and academic performance of ABM (Accountancy, Business and Management) students at Gingoog City Colleges in the Philippines. It hypothesizes that there is no significant relationship between students' time management and their academic performance. The study aims to determine students' time management strategies and how their strategy affects their class performance. It is grounded in Cognitive Load Theory which suggests that effective time management can improve academic performance by reducing cognitive load.

The Effect of Time Management to the Academic Performance

of ABM student in GCC

INTRODUCTION

Time is a unique commodity that is given equally to everyone regardless of age or

station as stated by Syed Umar FarooqRoeen RehmaniSajjad Ahmad Afridi (2010).

Every one of them has a distinct time. They are given it freely and equally, and they

have control over how they use and spend it. Time is a unique source of everything,

and they may accomplish whatever they want, whether we're young or adult; it doesn't

matter; but individually, we are given time. lt is definitely time is the given source

that is very important to each of us since this is where we based our daily doings. It

cannot be brought back as it has already passed, that's why time is valued by

everyone.

Dividing your time between different things is called time management. It helps

you to become well organized at everything or every activities you do. According to

Savino 2016, time management has also been defined as a form of self-management

with a clear emphasis on time in understanding what activities to do; how to do them

more efficiently; in what time it should be done and when is the correct time to the

particular activity. In addition, with the help of time management things can be done

appropriately and accordingly.

Time management is the process of organizing your things to do for you to

finished your task or anything you do and not waste it in an unimportant things.

According to James A. K. Tan(2023) It appears that, ideally, one should not spend
time at all on events that are Not important and Urgent, and events that are Not

important and Not Urgent. However, everyone is not perfect and tend to do things

without planning, that's why we need to plan our time with the help of time

management.

They holds their time properly, it's their choice of how they spend their time to

achieve their goals efficiently and effectively. However, through time management

people organize their time properly. According to Saman SalehAbdulkhaleq Nader

Qader[...]Musbah Aqel(2021) Time management is the ability to plan and control how

a person spends his hours in order to achieve his goals effectively. This involves

organizing time between different areas of life, from work, household tasks, social

life, and hobbies. Time always passes and we cannot control it, but time management

is by organizing events in your life in proportion to time. Mostly individual has

difficulty managing their time more effectively; they don't know what to do first or

where to start, which is why they find it difficult to handle their day to day living as a

person. Time is precious; wasting it might not be a good thing. Allocating your time

may be plays a big role as a person, it is to guide you for your doings to be able to

achieve such goal you set, by focusing on one goal at a time may assist you to have a

healthy living. Additionally, time management has is a big help to an individual to

organize their activities or errands accordingly.

Mostly of the students valued their time as much as how they value their academic

performance. However, they do not allocate their time properly that can cause to their

academic performance and to their other activities.

Students are having a hard time when it comes to allocating the time because of

their activities and also they tend to procrastinate but ended up doing nothing. There
is a lot of pressure to plan out every minute of your day in order to be as productive as

possible. (Colin Darretta, 2019). While having a set schedule might help you remain

on track and achieve your goals, they have their own way of spending their time as

efficiently as possible in order to be productive. Productivity does not imply

occupying every minute of your day. It's about striking a balance between task

completion and personal matters.

According to Karim Babayi NadinloyiNader Hajloo[...]Hasan Sadeghi(2013)

Proper time management is key to success. The purpose of this study aims to assess

the effectiveness of time management training on academic time management of

students. Time management is essential for properly prioritizing work, being

organized, and making the most of their limited time. They have the capacity to

manage their time well and are more likely to attain their goals and be successful in

their endeavors. They believe that the study's goal, which was to analyze the impact

of time management training on students' academic time management, is essential and

valuable.

Many students struggle to balance their academic responsibilities and other

commitments, and giving them with training or resources to enhance their time

management skills can be advantageous. They can learn to make the most of their

time and ultimately improve their academic achievement by prioritizing things.

The majority of students in the current generation do not know how to manage

their time efficiently when it comes to studying and other tasks. As one of the top

schools in Gingoog City, which is the Gingoog City Colleges, some students couldn't

manage their time properly due to the number of activities they participate in and their
laziness, especially the ABM students. They usually do their homework in school, so

they are not able to manage their time properly.

This study aims to provide the answer of the following questions:

a. How do students allocate their time towards their academic performance and

personal matters?

b.What caused them to be unable to manage their time effectively?

c.What time-management strategies have you found to be most useful in improving

academic performance?
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to determine on how time management affects the academic

performance of ABM students in GCC.

Specifically the study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What are the strategies used by students to manage their time?

2. How do students perform in the class based on their own time management

strategy?

3. Is there a significant relationship between students time management and their

academic performance?

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK:

This study is anchored with the following theories:

According to T de Song (2010), Cognitive Load Theory: Efficient time

management can reduce cognitive load. When students organize their study materials

and schedule tasks strategically, they can allocate more mental resources to

understanding and retaining information which positively affects academic

performance. Student performance can be greatly improved if their time is well

organized. It can really help them on putting their tasks accordingly and it can result

to good effect to their academic performance.

This theory by Cal Neport, (2020), Time Blocking: Suggests that you divide your

day into specific blocks of time each dedicated to a particular task or category of

tasks. By allocating time for different activities, you can ensure better focus and
productivity. Allocating your time properly can help you to become more productive

to each tasks you do. You are dedicated to do tasks when you know that everything is

being divided accordingly and everything is going on how you plan it..

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study follows the independent and dependent variables models.

Figure 1 shows the independent variable which is time management. It also includes

the dependent variable which is the academic performance of students.

Time management is the art of properly planning your time to a specific task. The

consequences of not allocating your time, not turning your work on time, and missing

important deadlines, on the other hand, might be far more serious than might realize.

Academic performance refers to how well a student is doing in their studies and

educational pursuit. It is affected by how you control and allocate your time to

different activities as effectively and efficiently as possible.
