PRACTICE PROBLEM – COLUMN BASE PLATE

CE134P – 2 _ A78 and B72

Professor: Engr. John Ferry Dela Cruz

Instructions: Write in a short bond paper. Complete question and solutions. Final answer
should be box and highlighted. Grade will be based on the presentation of solution and
final answer. Soft and Hard Copy submission is required.

RECTANGULAR BASE PLATE:

1. An axially loaded W 250 x 89 column is supported on a 30 mm thick base plate having
dimensions of 315 mm x 375 mm. The concrete pedestal on which the base plate is set is
450 mm square. All steel is A36. Use f’c = 24.2 MPa, bf = 256 mm and d = 260 mm

a) Determine the allowable bearing pressure (kPA) on the concrete pedestal.

b) Find the max. allowable axial load that this base plate can support based on allowable
bearing pressure of concrete pedestal.
c) Find the design axial load that this plate can support based on the bending strength
of the plate.

2. An A36 W 360 X 110 column carries an axial loads of DL = 300 kN and LL = 1200 kN. A
rectangular base plate is required to support this column. Assume that the base plate will
cover the full area of concrete pier with f’c = 20.7 MPa.
W 360 x 110 Properties:
d = 360mm
bf = 256mm
tf = 19.8 mm

a) Determine the allowable width B of the base plate if 𝑁 = √1.5𝐵! + 𝑛

b) Determine the allowable length N of the base plate.
c) Determine the thickness of the base plate based on ASD.

SQUARE BASE PLATE:

3. A square plate supports a W 250 x 167 column that supports an axial load of DL = 900 kN
and LL = 2500 kN. The base plate is be of A36 steel. The pile cap is 1.3m square. The
compressive strength of concrete is 21 MPa. Assume less than full area.

a) Determine the nominal bearing pressure of the pile cap.

b) Determine the size of the base plate using LRFD.
c) Determine the thickness of the base plate using LRFD.
