DEGREES OF COMPARISON

1. POSITIVE DEGREE
There is no other person or thing used to compare, but it is the general way of saying about persons, animals and
things that they have some quality above average in general sense.
Examples: Tom is a tall boy
She ate the lunch quickly

2. COMPARATIVE DEGREE
To show that someone/thing/animal has more of the quality.
Examples: Tom is taller than his sister
She ate the lunch more quickly than me.
Note:
A. 1 syllable
(…er)  bigger, smarter, longer  Tiger is bigger than cat
B. 2 syllables
(…er)  funnier, cleverer, easier  Bob and Tom are funnier than Alisa and Edwin
(more …)  more handsome, more careful  Andre is more handsome than Sule
C. More than 2 syllables
(more …)  more difficult, more interesting  Math and Science are more difficult than English.

3. SUPERLATIVE DEGREE
To show that someone/thing/animal has the most of the quality.
Examples: Tom is the tallest student in the class.
She ate the lunch the most quickly of other girls.
Note:
A. 1 syllable
(the…est)  the biggest, the smartest, the longest  His cat is the biggest of our cats.
B. 2 syllables
(the…est)  the funniest, the cleverest, the easiest  Bob and Tom are the funniest students.
(the most …)  the most handsome, the most careful  Andre the most handsome of all boys.
C. More than 2 syllables
(the most…)  the most difficult, the most interesting  Math is the most difficult of all subjects.
