participation engagement and achievement

STATEMENTS:

1. He sat for a moment under the scorching heat of the

sun. While wearing a suit that covers every part of his
body, he took a deep breath, and made a sigh. His
body is beaten due to a hard day’s work.

Try to create a picture in your mind based from the

words that you have read.

What do you think is the scenario?

Yes. Based from the words, I totally agree with you.

Very good.

What do you think is the job of the person in the

statement?

Ma’am, I think it describes a man who is very tired and is

He could be a farmer, or he could also be a medical

frontliner.

(Process the picture.)

Let’s proceed to our next statement.

2. Dressed in a gown and suit, their eyes twinkled as

they go out of the door together. Others were
clapping their hands while the rest were just happy
while throwing petals of flowers to celebrate with
them.

What do you think is the event based on the

statement?

Yes. A wedding is the most probable answer based

from the description.

What can you say about the mood of the event?

Why do you say so?

Ma’am, I think it’s a wedding.

PICTURE #2

It has a happy mood.

In weddings, we celebrate love of two people therefore we

have a reason to be happy.

(Process the picture.)

Very brilliant answers!

3. There’s a rainbow always after the rain.

We’ll this line is kind of familiar but what do you think

is actually meant by this? Do you have any idea?
PICTURE #3 (Indicator 3)

I think the word rainbow and rain symbolizes something.

We could associate the rain with the problems we have in
life and the rainbow with the hope that we will all get
through with whatever challenge we have in life.

(Process the picture.)

Very good!

INDICATOR 2: Display proficient use of Mother Tongue, Filipino

and English to facilitate teaching and learning

If you look into the pictures, the tired, medical front

liner, the pandemic wedding and the rainbow that
symbolizes our hope, it shows the various faces
and aspects that this pandemic has offered us. It has
challenged and exhausted each one of us in every
way. We have been resourceful in finding ways to
continue with our lives as we cling on to the hope that
one day, this will all be over.

Science and research says, that the virus has the

capacity to develop into other strains and millions
have already been affected. Therefore, we are
advised to keep on abiding with the safety protocols
such as, washing of hands, observing social
distancing and wearing of face masks as we are
fighting against an invisible enemy. Let’s us
remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Ma’am, I also see, light from the sun and a hand watering
the plant.

The activity that we had a while ago, actually leads us to our

main discussion.
I see positivity ma’am or hope, due to the bright light
coming from the sun.

When we read any work of literature, may it be a poem, a short

story, or a novel, you might have noticed that authors use words
that stimulate your imagination. For me ma’am, the plant represents life.

I compare our lives to a plant because, just like a plant we

What can you imagine from that sentence?

Correct!

They also write expressions or sentences that are not supposed

to be taken literally. Sometimes, we do not understand right away
what they are trying to say because they expressed themselves
figuratively and so we need to interpret or explain what they had
written. How do we do that? We should have knowledge of
literary devices and this is what we are going to learn today.

So what are literary devices?

Literary Devices refer to the techniques used by an author to

achieve his or her purpose. These are used to make the piece
more creative and beautiful. Aside from that, these are used to
make vivid images, to set the tone and mood, to create colorful
characters, to share information, to improve the quality of writing
of authors, and to help readers understand writings on a deeper
level.

INDICATOR 6: Maintain learning environments that nurture and

to be aware of literary devices?

Yes! That is correct!

There are actually many literary devices, but for today we will
only focus on the major ones which are, character development,
imagery, in order for us to find out the tone and mood of the
passages. Are you ready?

As we begin, let us watch this video and please take note of the
details for our discussion afterwards:

A Man with a Lamp

Once upon a time, there was a small, quiet town. There

lived a man by himself who couldn’t see. He was blind.
Yet, he carried a lighted lamp with him whenever he went
out at night to enjoy the cool fresh air.

One night as he was coming home after having a delicious

dinner outside, he came across a group of young travelers. Ma’am by understanding literary devices, we will be able to

and can’t see anything! Why do you carry the lamp
then?!” Then they laughed so loud at the blind old man.

The blind man replied, “Yes, unfortunately, I am blind and

carrying is for the people like you who can see. You may
not see the blind man coming and end up pushing me. That
is why I carry a lighted lamp”.

The group of travelers felt ashamed and apologized for

their behavior.

INDICATOR 8: Design, adapt and implement teaching

strategies that are responsive to learners with disabilities,
giftedness and talents

INDICATOR 9: Adapt and use culturally appropriate teaching

strategies to address the needs of learners from indigenous
groups.

What’s the title of our story? Yes, (Name of student)

Yes, that’s correct. Who are the characters?

How did the author describe the old man? What about the young
travelers?

Was there a change that happened in any of these characters? If

yes, which of these characters changed at the end of the story?

Yes! Awesome! And that is what our first literary device is all
about, character development.

Can you read the definition for us (Name of student)?

Character Development is when the author creates a character

which begins as one sort of person, but learns and grows
throughout the story. At the end of the story, that character is a
different person.

Just like in our example, the character of the young travelers

developed from one to another because of the change that
happened. The young travelers admitted they were wrong for
making fun of the blind old man.

Shall we proceed?

When you were in elementary, in your science class, you were

taught about the 5 senses of our body and these are: sense of
sight, sense of smell, sense of taste and sense of touch.
INDICATOR 1: SS3LT-IIab-1 Describe the functions of the sense
of organs of the human body

While you were reading the story, did you use your five senses?

Very good!

In our passage, we saw the blind man, his lighted lamp in the
night, and the young travelers. These words appealed to our
sense of sight.

When the passage mentioned, “cool fresh air” it appealed to our A man with a lamp, ma’am.
sense of smell. How about when it mentioned, “delicious dinner”?

If we have the words “push” as well as “carried a lamp” as The young travelers changed when they understood the
examples, to what sense did these words appeal to? reason why the blind old man had to

carry a lamp at night.

Very good analyzation. The author used the literary device to

stimulate our senses through words that he or she chose to use.
And that is what we call as imagery.

Imagery is an element of a narrative that uses words that appeal

to our five senses.

Character Development is when the author creates a

character which begins as one sort of person, but learns

of touch.
Wow! Please give yourselves a clap, for coming up with brilliant
answers!

Let’s proceed with the next literary device.

Upon hearing the importance of the lighted lamp to the blind old
man, what did the young travelers realize? INDICATOR 1:

Yes indeed. How do we relate that in real life?

It appealed to our sense of taste ma’am.

Very good! What object did the author use to teach us the value
of respect?

lamp to represent something. This literary device is called
Symbolism.
To our sense of touch Ma’am.

Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent something beyond

the literal meaning. The author makes use of ordinary people or
objects around us to mean something else.

What do you think are the other things or elements in the story
that symbolizes or represent something?

Wow! What made you say so?

Very well said! Can we give (Name of student) a grand clap for
that?
Same thing with the lighted lamp, it is just a tool but if we go
deeper, the lighted lamp symbolizes the lesson that we learn
which opens our eyes and our minds. We may be blind because
of ignorance but once we learn something good, we become
enlightened.
Students provide answers such as the following:

Taste – bland, too sweet

Now let’s talk about your emotion. What did you feel at the
beginning of the story? Hearing – annoying noise, deafening silence

Touch – rough, cold as ice

Are there other emotions that you felt while reading the story?

Good. How about you, (Name of student)?

Very brilliant answers my students!

writing?

That’s an excellent analysis!

The attitude a writer takes toward an audience, a subject, or a

character is what we call as TONE. His or her use of words that
denote emotions or feelings reflect his or her attitude. These It was the lighted lamp ma’am.
tones are felt by the readers.

There are two types of tones:

Positive Tones- energetic, enthusiastic, humorous, illuminating,

lighthearted, nostalgic, optimistic, respectful, whimsical, formal,
informal

Negative Tones- dark, depressing, foreboding, gloomy, dull,

pessimistic, pompous, sardonic, strident, tense.
From that definition, what do you think is the tone of our story?

Ma’am, I think the blind old man represents all of us.

Perfect!

Another element that goes together with the tone is the MOOD. It It is simply because I believe that our physical appearance,
refers to the feeling or atmosphere the readers perceive or feel age, or abilities should not matter. Everyone deserves to be
while reading. respected.

Examples of mood:

Positive Moods- excited, dreamy, peaceful, satisfied, thankful,

sympathetic, pleased

Negative Moods- annoyed, disappointed, scared, uncomfortable,

confused, nervous, sad

The tone of the story is optimistic so you as the reader also felt
pleased with the outcome of the story thus giving a positive and
satisfied mood.

Please take note of this:

In order to properly explain the tone and mood of the story, you
have to feel what the characters are feeling, you have to put
yourself in their shoes. You have to empathize. Do you get me?
At the start, I actually felt admiration for the old man for
being independent despite his condition Ma’am.

Do you have any questions or some clarifications?

Ma’am in my case, I felt annoyed at the young travelers

because they were rude to the old man.

We were in line at the ice cream store when I noticed him.

His face bore the marks of too many fights- a crooked nose and
some scars. His clothes were rumpled, though clean. I stepped
between him and my children, using my back to erect a wall.

The first time he spoke, I didn’t hear him clearly and so

just nodded to acknowledge him. I barely made eye contact with
him. Because my wife wasn’t with me, he thought I was a single
parent and gently said, “It’s hard raising them alone,

isn’t it?”

Something in his voice made me turn to look at him. Only

then did I notice his children, and I listened to him tell me how
long his wife had been gone. His soft words contrasted with his
hard exterior.

I was ashamed of myself. Once again I had failed to see

beyond outward appearances. This reminded me of Jesus who
only saw the needs of the people and met them with
unconditional love.
