The Helpful Fisher and The Lovely Mermaid

by: Jerome C. Bayao

In a simple place in Lemery, There once lived an old

man and his wife. Their hut stood in front of the beautiful sea.
It was surrounded by tall coconut trees with colorful flowers.
The fisherman and his wife were very poor and they had to
work all day. But they were very happy because their
grandson Andrei stayed with them.

Who are the characters in the story?

Andrei was a jolly little boy. He had big black eyes. He
was short, strong, fair in complexion, and liked to play and
help his grandparents. He went fishing with his grandfather.
He enjoyed helping his grandparents. He also helped his
grandmother by selling fish for their needs.

How will you describe Andrei?

He loved to see the beautiful sea and go fishing. How he
wished he had a boat of his own. Then, he would be able to go
fishing in a beautiful sea and catch fish for their daily living.
At night, when he went to bed, he often dreamed he was
fishing in the sea. He would find fortune in the sea.

Do you think what will be his fortune?

One day, his grandfather got sick. He could no longer go
fishing. He could not earn money to buy food. He was so sad.
“Do not be sad Grandpa,” said Andrei. “ I will find a
fortune in the sea. Then, we shall no longer be poor and we
shall have plenty to sell to have money.”
That night Andrie went to bed without supper, he was
so hungry. When he fell asleep, he had a dream. A lovely
mermaid talked to him.

What do you think is his dream?

“Why you are sad, Andrei?” the mermaid asked.
“Because my Grandfather is not feeling well,” he said.
“But, I shall go fishing in the sea and find a fortune.”
“Tomorrow, go and start fishing!” the mermaid said
with a smile.
“But I don’t have a boat! said Andrei sadly.
“Go to the sea, and you will find a boat there,” said the
mermaid.
When Andrei awoke he did not forget the mermaid’s
words. So he went to his Grandma who was sewing a skirt.

Do you think, what Andrei will do?

“Grandma, can I go fishing on the sea today?” asked
Andrei excitedly.
“But we have no boat,” her grandmother answered.
Andrei told her of his dream. His grandma wondered
how he could go fishing so she let him go.

Can he go fishing? Yes or No?

Andrei ran to the sea and found the boat on the shore.
He found a fishing rod inside the boat and it was ready for
use. He excitedly started fishing and he caught a big fish. He
shouted with joy. He ran back to his Grandma to tell her what
happened.
“We can have fish for supper, Grandma,” Andrei
shouted happily.
The next day, he told his Grandma that he would go
fishing again. He cannot see the fishing rod. He was so sad.
“Where is the rod? “ Andrei said He shook his head but
as he look around he found a net.
“Wow! I can use this for fishing,” said he. He let the net
down into the water. In a very short time.

What do you think is in the net?

He pulled the net and he found plenty of oysters. He

opened them one by one. He found large and beautiful pearls.
That time he remembered what his Grandmother said that
pearls can be sold.
He went back to their hut and shouted with joy. His
Grandpa and Grandma were so worried because they thought
that he was in danger.
Andrei shouted, “Look I got a lot of oysters with pearls.
Grandma My dreams come true.” He showed the pearls to his
grandparents. “
They huddled together and all of them were in tears.
“We can bring it to the pawnshop and change this into
money and we can have it for the rest of our lives,” Grandma
said.
