Waring & Norman Fairclough (power theorists)

Power in occupational relationships

Language and power has a key role to play in an organisation.

Bosses have instrumental power becuase of their occupational power given by their title (boss). Perhaps
uses bald on record strategies more frequently. Everyone expects them to manage and issue commands.

Instumental power - power to punish if they disobey.

Colleagues who have similar status and people who want to sway the public to do something will use
more influential power techniques (persuasive talk rather than authoritarian talk). Phatic talk is required
to establish a level of rapport, as if there's no rapport, there's a lot less persuasive power. (Koester, 2004)

Evaluate the idea that a person's social class is the last influential factor in a person's use of language.
