Question 1. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs claims that low-level needs that are essential to life
must be met before less basic higher level needs can be satisfied. Fully explain Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs theory and state four criticisms that argue against it. Outline and discuss any
one of the major perspectives or theories of learning in Psychology (30 marks)
Question 2. Examine the following case and answer the questions that follow:
Maria, a 22 years old Information Technology Specialist, was brought into the community health
centre by you, her close friend and co-worker. You reported that you were having a hard time
dealing with her. You observed that at times Maria is extremely excitable and energetic –
speaking rapidly, sleeping only a few hours, and involving herself in reckless behaviours such as
speeding on the highways and engaging in numerous sexual encounters with various partners.
You also observed that at times Maria is very depressed.
After speaking with Maria, you learned that she has a very negative self-image. She feels
worthless and believes that there is nothing that she can do right. She gives you several
examples of her worthlessness, stating repeatedly: “I can’t do anything right,” “I am such a
failure,” and “No one cares about me!”
