BACKGROUND
ENVIRONMENT: Corfu, or Kerkira is
one of the seven Greek islands, located
northwest of Greece, in the Ionian Sea.
It is separated from the Greek and Albanian mainland by a narrow channel. Considered
relatively one of the large Greek isles, Corfu's area is 593 square kilometers (229 square
miles). The northern part of the island is mountainous with Mount Pandokrator reaching
906m (2,972ft), the central part hilly, and the southern part low and fairly leveled. The island
is well watered and fertile.

NARRATIVE: The girl was bitten by a shark immediately after she dived into the water from
a yacht moored in the bay. The yacht had been accompanied by some dolphins minutes
earlier after approaching the coast on a social / family trip. The incident was witnessed by
her parents and a number of others aboard the yacht.

INJURY: Fatal. Her body was not recovered.

SPECIES: The incident reportedly involved a white shark.
