GORGONA ISLAND COLOMBIA

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION

Gorgonas island is located in Colombian pacific coast, in the department


of Cauca.
HISTORY

Inhabited since in 18th


century BC, it was
discovered in 1524 by Diego
Almagro and He named it
San Felipe.
Years after the conqueror
Francisco Pizarro, he came
to these beaches and he
named its Gorgona; he
named so due to large
number of snakes in the
island, because he
remembered the gorgonas
of the greek mythology,
what instead of hairs, It
carried snakes on the head.
HISTORY
The president Alberto Lleras
ordered build a maximum
security prison there, in the
year 1965.
The prison was built based on
the model of the nazi camps.
Where were sent the criminals
more dangerous country.
Gorgona jail worked out to
until on 25th june 1984 and one
year after, the islands were
declared national natural
park.
CHARACTERISTICS
Gorgonilla is an island to location southwest of
Gorgona, together whit three islets it name
"Rocas del horno", "Islote el viudo" and "paso
del horno".
In Gorgona island meet two of the most
biodiverse ecosystems in the world: the coral
reefs and humid tropical rainforest. It goes to
the sand and the first thing that surprises is the
thick jungle that covers the island almost
completely.
Gorgona has an area of 24 square kilometers
and it is after to Choco, the place where
raining most in the world.
