Performance Task 4
Climate Change: Causes, Impacts, and Issues

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this performance task is to inform and educate the
audience about the causes, impacts, and issues related to climate change, and to
raise awareness about the urgent need for action to mitigate its effects.

2. Introduce the topic of climate change and its significance.


A considerable change in temperature over an extended period of time is referred to
as climate change. Natural forces and human activity are both contributing factors to
climate change. It's essential because, if we don't, the earth might risk itself. Like, what
we've been going through. The rising temperature and the frequent occurrence of
unexpected events. It has a significant impact on our life, particularly the future.
Because we can't change anything and make it back if we just ignore such things, we
need to save it while we still have the chance.

3. Provide a brief history of the issue, including the scientific consensus around
climate change and the international efforts to address it.
It is undeniable that humanity's inability to cease the burning of fossil fuels is one of
the factors making our planet unsafe. This is built on more than a century's worth of
scientific data that serves as the foundation of modern society. The 1800s saw more
curiosity than stress in response to studies that suggested human-produced carbon
dioxide (CO2) and other gases could build up in the atmosphere and insulate Earth.
Since the industrial revolution, human activities like the burning of fossil fuels have
increased the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by more than a third. The atmospheric
carbon dioxide level hasn't been this high (400 parts per million) in thousands of years,
which has caused changes in the climate on Earth. Scientific organisations and
academies at the national and international levels have assessed the state of the
condition of global warming. The results reached by the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change are usually supported by these evaluation. Governments have received
recommendations from some scientific organisations regarding particular policies, and
science can help guide an efficient response to climate change. However, since making
policy decisions sometimes involves making value judgments, they are not covered by
the scientific opinion.

4. Explain the primary causes of climate change, including greenhouse gas


emissions, deforestation, and industrial activities.
Deforestation, industrial activities, and greenhouse gas emissions are the main
causes of climate change. Burning fossil fuels is one of the main contributors to climate
change because it releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,
which can lead to pollution and be harmful to human health by causing asthma. The
second is tree cutting. We are aware of how important trees are to us since they help
clean the air, yet cutting down trees without replacing them could be dangerous for us.
Carbon dioxide is absorbed and stored by trees.When forests are cut down, carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases are released. Around 10% of global warming is
caused by the destruction and loss of forests. Methane and nitrous oxide are two
greenhouse gases that exacerbate the greenhouse effect and climate change and are
emitted by industrial processes like industry and agriculture.

5. Highlight the role of human activity in contributing to climate change, and


provide scientific evidence and statistics to support your claims.
The concentration of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere is currently at nearly 412
parts per million (ppm) and rising. This represents a 47 percent increase since the
beginning of the Industrial Age, when the concentration was near 280 ppm, and an 11
percent increase since 2000, when it was near 370 ppm. While earth's climate has
changed in the past, the tremendous absorption of greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere has caused an alarming rate of planet warming. (The Atmosphere: Getting

Our oceans, our weather, our food supply, and our health are all impacted by climate
change. Due to the melting of ice sheets like Greenland and Antarctica, more water
than was previously stored in glaciers causes sea levels to increase and floods coastal
areas. Scientists agree that the changes in climate that we are seeing today are largely
caused by human activity, and it's climate change that drives sea level rise

temperatures also cause more extreme weather, which includes longer and more
frequent droughts as well as more violent big storms, floods, and heavy snowfall. Due to
these weather changes, it is harder to grow food, there are fewer places where plants
and animals can live, and the water supply is getting shorter. besides creating fresh
agricultural difficulties. The physical health of humans can be directly impacted by
climate change in addition to providing new agricultural issues. The warmer air in cities
produces a climate that traps pollution and makes it harder to avoid.This is due to the
ozone particles present in smog, which increase rapidly in higher temperatures. High
pollution exposure has been proven to cause lung cancer, heart disease, and asthma.
Humans are responsible for the rapid rate of climate change, but they are also the only
ones capable of stopping it. We may still be able to stop some of the worst effects of
climate change if we try to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources like solar
and wind that don't emit greenhouse gases. (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021).
