Abstract

Field training in civil engineering refers to on-the-job training or hands-on experience

that is gained through working on real-world projects in the field.

Field training can be an important aspect of a civil engineer education and professional
development, as it allows me to apply the knowledge and skills I have learned in the
classroom to real-world situations and to gain practical experience working on various
types of projects. It can also provide opportunities for civil engineers to work with
experienced professionals, learn from their colleagues, and gain a better understanding
of the industry and the various challenges that they may encounter in their work.

Field training may involve working on a wide range of projects, including the design and
construction of infrastructure. It may also involve tasks such as conducting site surveys,
analyzing data, preparing plans and drawings, and collaborating with other
professionals to ensure that projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the
highest standards.

Concrete:
Concrete is a very versatile and widely used construction material. It is composed of
a mixture of cement, water, and aggregates, such as sand and gravel. The cement
reacts chemically with the water to form a hard, strong material known as concrete.
One of the key benefits of concrete is that it is strong and durable, making it
suitable for use in a variety of construction projects, including buildings, bridges, roads,
and more. It is also relatively inexpensive and widely available, which makes it a
popular choice for many types of construction projects.
There are many factors that can affect the strength and durability of concrete,
including the type and amount of cement used, the ratio of water to cement, the type
and size of the aggregates, and the curing process. Proper design and construction
techniques are essential to ensure that the concrete is of the necessary strength and
durability for the intended use.
The Portland Cement Association (PCA) is a research and educational organization
that provides information and guidance on all aspects of concrete construction. It
works with organizations such as the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the American
Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and the National
Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) to develop standards, specifications, test
methods, and other guidelines for the use of concrete in construction.

Foundation:
The foundation of a building is the structural element that supports the weight of
the building and transfers that load to the ground. It is one of the most important
elements of a building, as it provides the stability and support necessary for the
structure to remain upright and safe.

There are several types of foundations that can be used for buildings, including
shallow foundations, deep foundations, and piles. The type of foundation chosen will
depend on the specific characteristics of the site, such as the soil conditions, the size
and shape of the building, and the local climate.

A foundation must be designed to withstand the loads and forces that will be
applied to it, such as the weight of the building, wind, and earthquakes. It must also be
properly constructed to ensure that it is stable and can support the building over time.

7
Overall, the foundation of a building plays a critical role in the safety and stability of
the structure, and it is important to choose the appropriate type of foundation and
ensure that it is designed and constructed properly.

9
Columns:
Columns are structural elements that are used to transfer loads from beams and slabs to footings in a
building or structure. During training, engineering students may have the opportunity to observe and
participate in the construction of columns. During this process, there are several checks that may be
performed to ensure the quality and integrity of the columns, including checking the spacing between
stirrups, the number of longitudinal bars, and the straightness of the columns. These checks are
important to ensure that the columns can properly support the loads they are designed to bear.

Beams:
A tie beam is a structural element that connects two footings or two columns in a
building or structure. Tie beams are used to prevent partial settlement and to carry
partition loads in the case of tie beams that connect two footings. In the case of tie
beams that connect two columns, they are used to prevent buckling and to carry partition
12
loads as well. Tie beams encounter the soil, which is important to consider when
designing and constructing these elements. Proper design and construction of tie beams
is essential to ensure the stability and integrity of the overall structure.

fig.5 Beams

13
Walls and Cores:

Walls are vertical or nearly vertical structural elements that enclose or divide a space.
They can be load-bearing or non-load-bearing, depending on their function. Load-
bearing walls support the weight of the building and transfer the load to the foundation,
while non-load-bearing walls serve to enclose or divide space but do not support the
weight of the building.

Cores are central vertical elements in a building that contain elevator shafts,
stairwells, and other mechanical and electrical systems. They are typically load-bearing
and are designed to support the weight of the building as well as the loads applied to the
core itself.

Both walls and cores play important roles in the structural integrity of a building.
They must be designed and constructed to withstand the loads and forces that will be
applied to them, such as the weight of the building, wind, and earthquakes. Proper
design and construction of walls and cores is essential for the safety and stability of a
building.

Problems Faced:

17
 Honeycombing in concrete refers to the presence of small voids or
pockets of air within the concrete. This can occur for a variety of reasons, such
as improper mixing, inadequate vibration during the pouring and finishing
process, or the use of coarse aggregate that is too large for the concrete mix.

Honeycombing can weaken the structural integrity of the concrete and reduce
its overall strength and durability. It can also make the concrete more
susceptible to freeze-thaw damage, since water can get into the voids and
expand when it freezes, causing the concrete to crack or spall.

To prevent honeycombing in concrete, it is important to use proper mixing and

finishing techniques, and to use the right size and type of aggregate for the
specific mix design. The concrete should also be adequately vibrated to ensure
that it is properly consolidated, and all voids are eliminated. If honeycombing
is found in a concrete structure, it may be necessary to repair or replace the
affected areas in order to restore the strength and integrity of the structure.

 Buckle and twist rebar in concrete?

Broken, over-produced, and warped rebar can be repaired by replacing the

damaged portion of rebar with new steel using butt welding. Additional stirrup
ties are added at the damage sites and then encased in concrete to provide the
required confinement of the concrete in the repaired area and prevent warping
of the member in the future.

Sometimes, additional rebar must be installed in existing masonry or concrete

structure members. In such cases, a hole larger than the diameter of the rod is
drilled. The hole is filled with fillers such as epoxy (was used in the project),
cement or other high strength fillers. The reinforcing bar is then pushed into
place and held until the plaster hardens.

18
Foundation thermal insulation:
Foundation thermal insulation is a process of insulating the foundation of a building in
order to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency. This is typically done by
adding a layer of insulation material to the exterior of the foundation walls, either on the
outside of the foundation or on the interior of the foundation walls. The insulation
material can be in the form of foam boards, blankets, or loose-fill insulation, and is
typically installed by a professional contractor. There are several benefits to insulating
the foundation of a building, including reducing heating and cooling costs, improving
comfort levels inside the building, and increasing the overall energy efficiency of the
building.

fig.9 thermal insulation

19
Backfill:

Backfill is the process of filling in an excavation or foundation with material. This is

typically done after the foundation of a building has been constructed, or after an
excavation has been made for a utility line or other purpose. The material used for
backfilling can vary, but it is usually soil or a combination of soil and other materials
such as gravel or sand.

The purpose of backfill is to support the structure or utility that is being built, and to
provide a stable base for it. Backfill is also used to help prevent settlement or sinking of
the structure or utility. Proper compaction of the backfill material is important to ensure
that it can support the weight of the structure and resist any settling or shifting.

Backfill is typically done by a contractor, who may use heavy equipment such as
bulldozers or backhoes to move and compact the backfill material. In some cases, the
backfill material may need to be compacted using specialized equipment such as a
vibrating roller or plate compactor.

training lessons

The training period is crucial for students for several reasons. It helps them connect
theoretical knowledge from courses with real-world applications, enhances
communication skills through interactions with various engineers and workers, teaches
time management and commitment to instructions and appointments, and helps them
learn how to handle sensitive problems with intelligence and realism. In addition, the
training period helps students develop the ability to work for long hours under
challenging conditions while maintaining high levels of performance. It also provides
insight into contract negotiations and the process of testing and arranging samples for
use in contracts.

The method of dealing between engineers and workers affect positively and negatively
on their performance, where the worker comfort and treated in a good way show its
effects on achievement and efficiency of the work.
Work long hours under the sun increases the pressure but should not affect the
business and must maintain a high level of achievement even in the toughest
conditions to abide by the project's timetable.

21
Chapter 4: Conclusions

Training is a crucial part of an engineering student's education, as it helps them

connect the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real-world applications.
Training also allows students to develop important personal qualities such as
cooperation, responsibility, and patience, which cannot be learned in a traditional
educational setting. In addition, training helps students identify their preferred
subspecialty within engineering, as well as gain a better understanding of the
challenges and difficulties that engineers face on the job, including exposure to
sunlight, working late at night, and dealing with a diverse group of people. Overall,
training provides valuable experience, knowledge, and skills that can help engineering
students succeed in their careers. It also helps students make connections with
potential employers and explore different areas of engineering to determine their
preferred field of work.

The relationship between engineers and workers can have a significant impact on their
performance. When workers feel comfortable and treated well, it can lead to improved
productivity and efficiency. On the other hand, if workers feel mistreated or
unsupported, it can negatively affect their performance. Working long hours in
challenging conditions, such as under direct sunlight, can increase pressure and make it
more difficult to maintain a high level of performance. However, it is important for
engineers and workers to remain focused and motivated, and to do their best to meet
the project timeline, even in tough conditions. Effective communication and teamwork
can also help to improve performance and productivity on the job.
