Experiment: 04
To demonstrate and calculate creep and different material at
different stresses and temperature.
Theory:
It is a time- dependent deformation under a certain applied load.
Generally, occurs at high temperature (thermal creep), but can also
happen at room temperature in certain materials (e.g. lead or glass),
albeit much slower. As a result, the material undergoes a time
dependent increase in length, which could be dangerous while in
service.
• Primary Creep: starts at a rapid rate and slows with time.
• Secondary Creep: has a relatively uniform rate.
• Tertiary Creep: has an accelerated creep rate and terminates when
the material breaks or ruptures. It is associated with both necking and
formation of grain boundary voids
Procedure:
Accurately measure and record the width and thickness of the
specimen
Put the weight hanger in position and fit its support pin in its highest
hole to hold the arm up and ready for the test specimen.
Fit the steel specimen support clips to the specimen.
Fit the specimen into place between the black support block and the
arm, and fit the pins.
Fit a suitable weight to the weight hanger, to give a stress that gives
the longest test time that you can allow.
Carefully remove the weight hanger support pin from the highest hole
in the weight hanger.
Lift the weight hanger and support it while you fit the support pin in
the lowest rubber mat (supplied) onto the base plate, underneath the
weight hanger.
Record the specimen extension after some interval, until it fractures or
stop extending due to the limits of the machine.
The whole operation is shown in figure.1
Figure.1
( Creep test Machine )
Data and calculation:
Mass of weight hanger = 0.16kg
Mass of arm pin = 0.04kg
Total mass = 98.884
