At the start of the story, we meet Michael, his mum, his dad and his
dog (Stella Artois). Following the loss of their jobs, Michael’s parents
decide to go

struck – Michael and Stella Artois fell overboard! They were washed up
on an island covered with thick forest, which was inhabited by various
tropical animals and a mysterious old man (Kensuke).
Michael began to teach Kensuke to speak English and, in return, Kensuke taught Michael how to paint. Kensuke
finally revealed how he had been on board a Japanese warship in World War 2 when he heard on the radio
that Nagasaki (his hometown) had been destroyed by an atomic bomb. He explained that his ship was
attacked by the Americans - he was the only survivor and had been living in solitude on the island ever since.
Michael understood that Kensuke was deeply distrustful of people as a result of his experiences but still
tried to send a rescue message to the outside world. When Kensuke discovered what Michael had done, he
was upset. However, Kensuke understood that Michael had his whole life in front of him and so forgave him. A
group of men arrived on the island to shoot the animals. Kensuke and Michael hid in a cave and protected the

Incredibly, Michael spotted the Peggy Sue out at sea. Michael asked Kensuke if he wanted to be rescued with

years. Michael and his parents were reunited, and he kept his promise to Kensuke
