Headline inflation rate or the annual rate of change on the prices of goods and services in the
market basket for all income households in SOCCSKSARGEN Region rose to 7.1% in
December 2022 from 7.0% the previous month. This is 1.0 percentage point lower than the
national inflation of 8.1% for the current month under review. Average inflation for the last
twelve months of 2022 was at 5.6%, higher than the national average.

From 2019 to 2022, the annual average inflation rate on the prices of goods and services in
the market basket was highest in 2022 at 5.6 percent. The lowest average inflation was in
2019 at 2.3 percent. The lowest monthly inflation was recorded in October 2019 at -0.3%
while the highest was recorded in December 2022 at 7.1%. Headline Inflation for All Items in
2022 exhibited an uptrend from 3.9% in February to 7.1% in Decemnber surpassing the 7.0%
recorded in September and November 2022 (Table 2).
Cotabato Province, with an inflation rate of 7.4%, was the highest contributor to
SOCCSKSARGEN Region’s 7.1% headline inflation in December 2022. It was followed by
South Cotabato at 7.1%; General Santos City, 6.9%; Sultan Kudarat Province, 6.1%;
Sarangani, 8.4%; and Cotabato City, 5.3%.
Except for Cotabato Province and General Santos City, the rest of the provinces recorded
higher price upticks in December 2022 when compared to the previous month. The highest
increment was recorded in Sultan Kudarat at 0.4 percentage point.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the highest price uptick was noted in December
2022 at 7.1% while the lowest was recorded in March 2022 at 3.3%. Headline Inflation for All
Items in December 2022 increased by 0.1 percentage point at 7.1%; highest since 2019.

The major contributors to the uptrend of the December 2022 inflation were Housing, Water;
Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (from 3.9% to 4.9%); Personal Care and Miscellaneous
Goods and Services (from 4.4 % and 4.8%); and Health (from 2.7% to 3.0%).
Other commodity groups exhibiting higher price gains were Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco
(from 10.5% to 10.6%); Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household
Maintenance (from 4.5% to 4.8%); and Recreation, Sports and Culture (from 4.3% to 4.6%).
On the other hand, commodity groups exhibiting lower price gains were Transport (from 11.2%
to 10.9%); and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (from 8.9% to 8.7%).
Meanwhile, five commodity groups had no change or negligible change from the previous
month’s rate: Restaurant and Accommodation Services (4.3%); Clothing and Footwear (4.1%);
Information and Communication (1.3%); Education Services (1.1%); and Financial Services
(0.0%) (Table 2).

The major contributors to the 7.1% inflation on the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (FNAB)
index in December 2022 were Cereals and cereal products; Vegetables, tubers, plantains,
cooking bananas and pulses; Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals; Sugar,
confectionery and desserts; and Milk, other dairy products and eggs.
The major contributors to the price downtrend in the FNAB were Fish and other seafood; Fruits
and nuts; and Cereals and cereal products.

Definition of Terms
Base Period/Year this refers to the period, usually a year, at which the index
number/points is set to 100. It is the point of index number series.
Headline Inflation measures changes in the cost of living based on movements in the
prices of a specified basket of major commodities. It refers to the
annual rate of change or the year-on-year change in the Consumer
Price Index.
Consumer Price Index the average retail prices of a fixed basket of goods and services
commonly purchased by households relative to a base year
Market Basket refers to a sample of goods and services that are commonly
purchased and bought by an average Filipino household
