Introduction:
TWO APPROACHS IN
PHILOSOPHY
REDUCTIONIST AND HOLISTIC
REDUCTIONISM
is the belief that human behavior can
be explained by breaking it down into
simpler component parts.
HOLISM
is a theory that parts of a whole are in intimate
interconnection, such that they cannot exist
independently of the whole, or cannot be
understood without reference to the whole,
which is thus regarded as greater than the sum
of its parts.
Example of Reductionist and Holistic:

REDUCTIONIST HOLISTIC
WHAT WOULD BE THE RELEVANCE OF THE
WHOLENESS OF BEING?

Reductionism and Holism are two philosophical perspectives that seek to

uncover the truth of a matter. Reductionism focuses on understanding the
properties of individual parts, likening the world to a machine with interconnected
components. This concept was introduced by René Descartes. In contrast, Holism,
popularized by Aristotle and later by Jan Smuts, emphasizes viewing everything as
a cohesive whole. Vinzons argues that understanding the properties of parts
contributes to grasping the interconnected nature of the whole. Both philosophies,
analytical and speculative, have their relevance in philosophical thinking, with the
ultimate aim of comprehending the interconnected oneness of all existence.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO USE REDUCTIONISM
AND HOLISM?

-The Latin maxim "Minima Maxima Sunt" highlights the significance of paying
attention to small details in life.

For instance, when we apply a reductionist approach to our favorite chicken-pork

adobo, we break it down into its components, potentially missing its unique
qualities. Similarly, in school attendance, one's presence is vital for the
completeness of a class section, reflecting the importance of considering the
bigger picture. This principle applies broadly to various aspects of life, such as
home, community, and social media.
HOW ABOUT THE HOLISTIC APPROACH?

-We look into the wholeness of the person, not just in one piece of his/her being.
-Holism helps us to take away our prejudices in such a way that we focus on the
wholeness, not by part.
-Practicing holism allows for philosophical contemplation, promoting an open-
minded consideration of various realities.
