Tuberculosis

It is a disease caused by germs that are
spread from person to person through air,
which mainly affects the lungs.

Treatment:
For initial treatment of Tb, 4-drug treatment
plan is made which includes:
1. isoniazid (kills tb bacteria)
2. rifampin (kills bacteria causing infection)
3. pyrazinamide (prevents growth)
4. ethambutol
These are given in combination for killing
the bacteria that causes the tb, infection
and stops its growth to prevent it from
spreading. this is given over a course of 6-
8 months depending on the patient’s
exposure and type of Tb.
these are also known as Tb’s first line of
antibacterial drugs.
phases of tb treatment
initial phase:
the drugs are administered for first two
months with all tb drugs combination
daily.
continuation phase:
the drugs are administered for 4-7 month.
