Chapter-1
Introduction
to
the Problem

3
Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, students and teachers have resorted to online
classrooms as the new norm. To keep up with their courses, students now employ video-
conferencing apps to communicate with their teachers remotely. In India, various online
learning and education apps are available for both Android and iOS devices to assist students
during this time. While some of these apps cater to general topics or serve as study aids, others
are focused on specialized fields of study. Furthermore, education apps in India offer interactive
ways to understand concepts such as animated videos, which make learning more enjoyable
and intuitive than conventional methods. Some apps also feature live classes to address doubts
in real-time.
Traditional classroom methods no longer suffice for today's digitally-connected students, who
gain little from monotonous worksheets and study guides. Contemporary learning theories
support the transition from outdated, mechanical learning models to personalized learning
opportunities. This approach involves instructional designs and academic-support strategies
tailored to the unique needs of each student, rather than uniform lesson planning. This method
fosters a fun and engaging classroom environment that benefits both students and teachers.
Personalized learning is not a new concept, but the emergence of classroom technology has
made it easier for educators to develop and deliver such student-centred lessons. This article
explores the benefits of personalized learning and how technology provides alternatives to
traditional “one-size-fits-all” approaches to teaching.
A prevalent issue in classrooms is the lack of connection between educators and pupils.
Teachers frequently fail to communicate effectively with their students, and the passive transfer
of information can exacerbate the divide between students who are either significantly ahead
or behind their peers. This is where the personalized learning approach proves to be extremely
beneficial for both teachers and students.
Personalized learning takes into account each student's unique learning needs, interests,
abilities, and goals, creating a more stimulating and active classroom environment that fosters
academic achievement and personal development. In fact, research studies have demonstrated
that implementing technology in the classroom to develop personalized learning plans can
improve student performance and test scores by an average of 30%. Here are some specific
ways in which technology can be utilized by teachers to design, implement, and evaluate
personalized lessons:
• Provide guidance via captivating media formats, such as videos, sound bites, and
interactive games.
• Expand the range of choices for students beyond the conventional essay, poster, or
report. For instance, students can present their comprehension of a subject matter
through multimedia slide shows or animated comics.
• Employ digital resources to obtain instant assessments of students’ comprehension and
apply the data to tailor future lessons.
