1. Announcer: Attention please, this is a safety announcement. In case of a fire, all workers must
leave the building immediately. Keep calm and do not run. Factory workers should
meet at gate number 2. Sales staff should meet in the car park. Office workers and all
visitors to the building should go directly to the main entrance. At each of these
places, you should report to the safety officer.
2. Speaker 1: You’re a new library member, aren’t you?
Speaker 2: Yes, I am. Perhaps you can help me. I’m interested in history, fiction and travel.
Where can I find those sections?
Speaker 1: Let me see. History is next to the gardening section, behind the children’s books.
Fiction is next to the window on the right, near the emergency exit. And travel ... ah,
yes! It’s next to the photocopier, just in front of the classical literature section.
3. Driving tester: Good morning, Mr Simpson. We’ll start your driving test now. Please can you drive
straight ahead and take the second left … very good … when we come to the traffic
light, please turn right. Drive straight ahead, please. At the church, turn right … I want
you to park. You’ll see a car park next to the town hall, but don’t turn into it. Drive
into the one next to the library, just after the supermarket.
4. Ranger: Welcome to our national park. I’d just like a minute of your time to tell you some of
our basic rules. Breaking these rules could get you a fine of up to $5,000. The
maximum number of backpackers in a group is eight. Please note, you may not stay at
any one campsite for more than three nights. You may start a fire at the campsites, but
you may only use dead wood. Do not burn your litter in campfires – please put it in
the special bins provided. One last point – do not use soap of any kind in our rivers or
streams. Thank you and enjoy your stay.
5. Woman: We have to get everything ready for the dinner this evening. Peter, I’d like you to
organise the wine and drinking glasses, but first, can you get the knives and forks
ready? There will be ten guests. Actually, Peter, before you see to the knives and
forks, can you put the plates on the table?
6. Speaker: There’s been a robbery at the bank on Johnson Road. Patrol cars 52 and 71, please
block the exit from the town; car 38, please proceed directly to the scene of the crime.
Inspector Hollis will meet you there. Car 25, please proceed to Forest Street
immediately – the get-away car is driving along there now.
7. Cook: Here’s a pancake recipe that can’t go wrong. First of all, put the flour and sugar in the
bowl. Next, add the milk, the egg and the butter. Some people use oil in their
pancakes, but I prefer butter. Mix it all well and pour it into the pan.
8. Teacher: I would like you all to read the lesson on page 76 about the French Revolution, but
before you do that, please turn to page 72, where there’s a short paragraph about
King Louis XVI and the French royal family. Once you’ve read that, there are seven
questions on page 78 that I’d like you to finish for homework.

Anna: Good afternoon, Mr Jones. This is Anna from Hope Air. I’m conducting a survey about your
recent flight with our airline. Would you mind answering a few questions?
Mr Jones: Not at all. I’ve got a few things to say about my last flight, actually. I’d heard a lot of good
things about your airline before I travelled, so I had high expectations.
Anna: I see. You were on our flight 772 to Dallas, weren’t you?
Mr Jones: Yes, well, that’s what I’d booked, but if you check your records, you’ll see the flight was
cancelled, so I flew out ten hours later on flight 776. It was really inconvenient.
Anna: I’m sorry to hear that. Let’s talk about the booking process. How would you rate it?
Mr Jones: Well, I went to your site and found the flights I wanted without a problem, but your site
didn’t accept my credit card. In the end, I booked with a travel agent.
Anna: I’m afraid you’re not the first person to tell us that, but it’s been fixed, so hopefully you
won’t have that problem again.
Mr Jones: Good to hear!
Anna: How was your pre-flight experience?
Mr Jones: Well, I must admit your company did contact me in advance to let me know that the flight
had been cancelled, so I didn’t waste time at the airport.
Anna: Did you find the cabin crew polite and attentive during your flight?
Mr Jones: Oh, yes. There was a little confusion with my meal, though. I ordered vegetarian, but
I wasn’t on the list for some reason. The flight attendant was very apologetic and offered
me a breakfast meal instead, so I didn’t go hungry.
Anna: Were you satisfied with our baggage arrangements at Dallas?
Mr Jones: Not really. I waited for ages for my suitcase, I was sure it was lost. Then it finally appeared,
but it was damaged.
Anna: Did you report it?
Mr Jones: Of course. I filled in the forms, although I wasn’t optimistic about getting compensation.
I was wrong about that, though.
Anna: I see. So do you think you will fly with our airline again?
Mr Jones: Well, there were a lot of problems last time. Unless I had no choice, I probably wouldn’t
consider it.
Anna: Thank you, sir.
