Activity 2

Answer the question below.

Based on what you have learned about emotional intelligence and competence, is
it enough for a teacher to have high IQ in order to be effective? Explain your answer. (20
pts)

Answer:

No, A good teacher needs more cognitive empathy and personal warmth than a
very high IQ. Students benefit more from the ability to look things at their perspective
and give support and enough scaffolding during learning than a systemizing mind. When
the relationship between a teacher and the students is right, the students will listen to the
teacher. Personal warmth together with high expectations and demands for students has
been connected to effectivity of teaching in several studies. It is not bad to have a decent
IQ and intellectual grasp of the subject matter, but without an ability to care, to respect
the students and to be present in interactive situations, the teacher will not succeed. The
younger the children, the more a teacher needs to be empathic. It could be that at
university level some professors may succeed with some students without cognitive
empathy, but my guess is even then some of brilliant students do not get the intellectual
spark they will benefit from if the teacher has no interaction skills and ends up being
sarcastic, mean or does not care for their student’s wellbeing.
ASSESSMENT 6

B. Direction: Answer/ Do the following:

1. State at least 3 ways on how you can perform your responsibilities and 3 ways on how
you can perform your roles. (30 pts)

I can perform my responsibilities through 1. Design educational activities that promote

physical, social, and intellectual growth of students. 2. Ensure safe learning environment
in the classroom. 3. Help children and students to discover their creativity and students to
solve problems independently.

I can perform my roles through first be a mediator who facilitates a teaching – learning
process that helps students to become independent, critical, and reflective learners, who
construct meaning by synthesizing new information with their own background
knowledge. Second being an Organizer who plans dynamic educational activities,
organizes the learning environment, establishes, and maintains a positive learning climate
and implements effective intervention strategies to enhance learning. Third one is teacher
acts as disciplinarian we want them to become competent human being (from human to
humane).

2. Give at least 3 actual situations or manifestations of your professional characteristics.

(10 pts.)

Be on time. Arriving early to school or staying late is often necessary. Some people may
prefer one option over the other to complete such tasks as preparing lesson plans,
organizing the classroom, responding to messages, entering data, and so forth. Regardless
of your choice of arrival and departure time, there is no excuse for arriving late to a class,
rehearsal, or meeting. Set the example for punctuality.

Dress respectfully. Dressing for success may make you feel more effective in your role
as educator and motivator. Especially with younger students, a particular accessory that
you are wearing may even be the magic to holding their attention! Dressing respectfully
should boost your confidence, helping to ensure recognition as the classroom leader.

Teachers Are Engaging. In kindergarten, an engaging teacher might be one who gets
down on the floor to do activities with their students on their level. In high school, an
engaging teacher may be one who thinks outside the box, adds humor to their lessons and
finds creative ways to bring learning into the real world.
3. Give at least 3 actual situations or manifestations of your desirable personal
characteristics. (10 pts.)
Effective goal setting

The most effective teachers know how to set clear objectives for individual students,
single lessons, their entire class, and themselves. Developing goals can assist with
gauging academic performance while giving students clear directives on how to improve.
Goals are also an important part of setting and measuring challenges, both for the
students and the teacher. Check for understanding. Example, instead of waiting to test
students’ knowledge in a test, check for comprehension during each lesson. This process
allows you to answer student questions and provide a deeper understanding of the topic
for students.

As a role model

Setting rules and encouraging certain behaviors is a good step toward student
development. Teachers who model the same behaviors they ask from their students are
more likely to help students cultivate desirable habits and behaviors. Create an
environment of honesty. Example, encourage your students to be honest with one another
through mediating open conversations. You can model honest behavior by sharing your
intentions behind classroom decisions to help students better empathize with you and
your position. This step can translate into students evaluating their own intentions and
how they impact others, increasing empathy and honesty.

Patience

A teacher must return patiently to a re-teaching situation when needed and try not to
register, by word or gesture, disappointment, or annoyance with results. For example,
situation inside the classroom with a bully student. She/He must stretch her patience in
the behavioral field, particularly with those pupils she tends to regard as “nuisances” or
“troublemakers” in the classroom.

4. Why is it important for teachers to have not only high IQ but also high EQ? (20 pts)

It is important for teachers to have not only high IQ but also high EQ because
intelligence contribute to one’s overall intelligence level, they are both needed for
success in work and in life as a teacher. Both IQ and EQ play roles in overall success, as
well as health, wellness, and happiness. Rather than focusing on which factors have a
more dominant influence, the greatest benefit may lie in learning to improve skills in
multiple areas. In addition to strengthening cognitive abilities, such
as memory and mental focus, you can also acquire and improve social and emotional
skills. Having high IQ is good for as a teacher being knowledgeable enough in doing
good lesson’s what to teach everyday also with the emotions, we need to remember
always looking for the best and ability of our students and help them improve in their
everyday doings.
5. Using not less than 500 words, write an essay pertaining to your perception of an
effective teacher. You will be rated based on structure, grammar/mechanics, language,
and content/Information. (40 pts)

Answer:
Teaching is a profession that is a rewarding challenging and complex role. An effective
teacher does not simply teach knowledge their students and instead aims to arm students
with the knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes that will prepare students for life-
long learning. To me teaching is one of the most important jobs in the world. To make a
difference in a child’s life is a huge privilege. There are many key attributes to being an
effective teacher but for me some of the key attributes are effective communication and
establishing good relationships, guide children’s behavior, setting up a good environment
for learning and being well organized. They are many other factors that also need to be
considered not to become just a good teacher but a great teacher.

Effective communication is one key element to being an efficient teacher.

Communication can be verbal or non-verbal. Communication not only between your
students but also the parents, your colleagues, and the community. It’s fair to say we
communicate in our everyday lives, so it makes sense we use the same principles in
teaching; to establish good relationships and trust. An effective teacher is someone who
increases the understanding of a pupil. Effective teaching is the ability of providing
instructions to students of varying abilities while incorporating instructional objectives and
assessing the effective education form of students. In the evaluation of performance,
efficiency on the lesson plan and technique of delivery forms form part of the criteria taken
into consideration. The teacher's practices that ensure the higher level of assessment and
active participation are most successful. This outdoes all the factors, such as size of the
class, socioeconomic conditions, and gender (Sullivan 2001).

Teaching is one of the world’s most challenging occupations. Teachers hold a

unique position in our society. Ask yourself whether you have the characteristics of an
effective teacher. If you feel that you have the characteristics, consider ways to improve
and learn more on how to become an effective teacher. An effective teacher makes good
use of instructional time and inspires students to do well and to know more. Each student
in the class must feel comfortable and have the sense of belonging. The classroom must
be conducive to learning and has the proper lighting so that learning easily takes place.
Being an effective teacher must be able to handle every situation that comes our way. We
surely encounter different problems regarding pupil’s attitudes and others. Teacher
should be flexible to take control of any situation. Teachers are values-oriented mentor.
Effective teachers tend to have similar characteristics: enthusiastic, creative, and positive.
You can express these characteristics in different ways, but typically this means that,
most time of the day, you truly want to be in classroom and see your pupils learn and
excel. Being organized in the classroom is another key element of an effective teacher.
By organizing and planning each day, the teacher surely presented the lesson in effective
manner. When the teacher is organizing in the classroom, pupils will observe, imitate,
and apply it in their daily lives. As teacher, one must be honest to himself, to the school
and to his profession. A teacher must always be truthful in whatever he does or say.
Ability to develop trusting, productive relationships.
The most frequent response is that a great teacher develops relationships with students.
The research literature agrees teachers need to be able to build trusting relationships with
students to create a safe, positive, and productive learning environment. This is
something that isn’t often emphasized in policy, resources or support given to teachers,
but teachers agree it is a very important part of their job. Patient, caring, kind
Patient and caring, which we defined as personality characteristics related to being a
compassionate person, particularly with learners, was the second most frequently
reported quality. Again, there is research to support that teacher dispositions are strongly
related to student learning and development. Knowledge of learners
This is a broad category that incorporates knowledge of the cognitive, social, and
emotional development of learners. It includes an understanding of how students learn at
a given developmental level; how learning in a specific subject area typically progresses
like learning progressions or trajectories; awareness that learners have individual needs
and abilities; and an understanding that instruction should be tailored to meet each
learner’s needs. Dedication to teaching dedication refers to a love of teaching or passion
for the work, which includes commitment to students’ success. Responses often referred
to loving the subject matter or simply being dedicated to the work. Great teachers are
“passionate about the subject they are teaching.” Subject matter knowledge. This includes
expertise in each content or subject area as well as knowledge of the curriculum, learning
objectives and/or standards in that content area. “An effective teacher is deeply
knowledgeable of the appropriate content materials.

Responses:

1. The topic/issue I particularly liked and would like to explore more is the
responsibilities of a good teacher. It has caught my attention and interest because for me
responsibilities of a good teacher are not easy you have kept in mind always what is best
and how to perform all the responsibilities.

2. The questions I have in relation to the topics and issues are: What are teachers'
responsibilities to their students? And what are the effective personal and professional
characteristics of a good teacher in student’s perception?

3. The knowledge/insights I gained from this module and the activities are roles and
responsibilities of a teacher, professional characteristics of a teacher, desirable
characteristics of superior teachers, Characteristics of a 21st Century Teacher, and the EQ
and IQ intelligence. All these characteristics are very important for as teacher that we
need to have for us to be called an effective in the field of teaching.

4. With this learning experience I intend to be more knowledgeable in all aspects of being
an effective teacher. After I read the module, I have realized that being a teacher was like
a saint, no mistakes but mostly perfect that you need to perform all, for you to be called
an effective teacher soon. I really do hope that I can be one of those effective teachers to
my students because, so far, I am just getting started in the field of teaching.
