Keep in Mind

Suggested Time Allotment: 15 minutes

Beliefs and Behaviors

Our beliefs and behaviors are shaped by the culture we grew up in. Culture affects the
way we perceive things, situations, people, values and expectations, including the way we
regard jobs and careers. It is a person’s culture that influences his or her beliefs and behaviors
about certain occupations.

In a modern world like ours in which diversity is respected and celebrated, even,
culture, while it remains significant, is no longer the sole consideration of a person in deciding
what career to pursue. For instance, a person, due to his or her culture, thinks that science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are fields mainly for males to pursue. Labor
trends and patterns as well as studies actually suggest that STEM-related jobs are high-
paying, professionally fulfilling and life-changing. More females will want to pursue studies
and careers that are STEM-related because of the crucial information given. Our beliefs and
behaviors are constantly evolving so that we can move with the changing times with relevance
and vigor.

What is a traditional occupation?

Traditional occupations have often been defined as jobs that have been done and
accomplished by skilled workers for generations. Traditional occupations vary with each
region, country, customs and culture. For instance, a few of the traditional occupations in Goa,
a state in coast of India, include sand extraction and betel nut farming. In the Philippines,
agriculture, fishing, gathering of forest products and traditional craft skills are the popular
traditional occupations that our ancestors engaged in.

Gender dimensions of occupations

8
Before, men and women were expected to make a career by what the society’s
perception and norms dictate. These stereotypes of following gender-based jobs can be a
hindrance in making career decisions because how we view our capabilities greatly impacts
how we respond to opportunities that come our way.

What is a non-traditional occupation?

Non-traditional occupation refers to work and job that have been done and fulfilled by
one gender. For instance, a non-traditional occupation for males include being a nurse, a
dietitian, a dental hygienist and an administrative assistant. On the other hand, non-traditional
occupation for females include being a radio broadcaster, an electrical technician, an engineer
and a contractor. When questioning one’s self on which career path to follow, one must
consider all the available options. We should not limit ourselves into choosing a career based
on our gender and the stereotypes that surround it. Women can be a part of law enforcement
and men can be a seamstress and they can both be great at their chosen field of work if their
skills, interests and passion will be used. A non-traditional career should be given thought
because these occupations often offer much higher salaries and benefits.

Career Mapping

Maps serve as our guide in navigating our way to new places with clarity and certainty.
While life may be full of twists and turns, when we have the aid of a reliable map, we will not
have to worry about getting lost in the middle of nowhere.

9
In these modern times, we have heard about Google maps, Waze and other Global
Positioning System (GPS) navigation software applications that can provide us with up-to-date
information about driving directions, traffic reports and road alerts.

Career mapping can be likened to these software applications and the great thing
about it is that it will also get us to where we want to be in life.

Career Mapping is a way to visualize in a form of a map what you want to achieve in
your career. This may include the steps and even the barriers in reaching that desired career.

Your career portfolio, which can be comprised of the selection of your work as a learner
(grades, drawings, papers, tests, journal entries, etc.) will help you create a quality career
map. It may also contain testimonials and recommendation letters from your teachers as well
as life skill activities you may be engaged in, various contests In which you have participated,
your extra-curricular activities as well as awards earned. Even the contents of your homeroom
guidance modules and other enrichment activities from the Department which promote your
holistic development can be included in your career map.

Utilizing all these available data in your career map with the aim to explore your strengths,
weaknesses as well as your ups and downs in your life as a learner will help you prepare
adequately.

Steps Toward Career Planning and Preparation

1. Self-assessment and research. Knowing one’s strengths and skills is advantageous in

planning one’s career. You can also evaluate your situation and preferences in this stage.
When you have narrowed down the choices and options to be considered, it can lead to clarity
and concentration and a step closer to planning your career.

2. Exploration and experimentation. After you have named and specified your skills and goals,
it is now time to experiment and find potential careers that might suit you. Participating in part-
time jobs and internships can provide opportunity to see different workplace environment and
functions.

3. Decision-making. After you have explored a number of career options, you can now decide
on a certain career path. Put in mind that you don’t have to decide on just one career but you
must weigh the pros and cons, as well as the risks and the general climate of a certain field of
work.

When You Believe

“Who knows what miracles you can achieve? When you believe, somehow you will, you will
when you believe”

The following words are taken from the song, “When You Believe” by Mariah Carey
and Whitney Houston. Reflect on the words for a moment and remember the role that mind-
setting plays in influencing and determining our success. Belief is integral in making anything
happen and it cannot be said enough: change your mindset, change your life!

Nonetheless, knowing the Life Story of Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago for the skills
and abilities she possessed which brought her astonishing success in her chosen career, will
also be of help to you. Read the life story of Miriam Defensor Santiago in brief.
