Gabay sa Magulang/Tagapag-alaga

Ang modyul na ito ay sinulat upang maibahagi ang mga positibong


dulot ng bolunterismo sa pagpapabuti ng kakayahang pang-akademiko ng in-
yong mag-aaral. Sa pagpapakita ng pagmamahal sa lipunan sa pamamagitan
ng paglilingkod nang walang inaasahang pinansyal na kapalit, natututo ang
mag-aaral ng maraming bagay na hindi niya matututunan sa apat na sulok
lamang ng silid-aralan. Dinisenyo ito para sa distance learning o alternati-
bong pamamaraan ng pagkatuto na hindi nangangailangan ng pisikal na pre-
sensya sa paaralan, bilang tugon sa direktiba na pagkansela ng face-to-face
class dulot ng pandemyang Covid-19.
Maaaring may mga pagkakataon na hihingiin ng mag-aaral ang inyong
patnubay sa pagsunod sa mga tagubilin, pagsagot sa mga tanong sa bawat
bahagi ng mga gawain at maging sa pagkakaroon ng mga kakailanganing
materyales base sa nakatakdang gawain. Hinihiling ng Kagawaran ang in-
yong suporta upang matagumpay niyang maisakatuparan ang mga gawain.
Makatutulong ang araling ito upang hubugin ang kaniyang kabutihan na
tanggapin ang pagkakaiba-iba ng bawat tao sa katangian, kakayahan,
damdamin at pananaw. Tiyakin na sasagutin niya ang bawat bahagi ng
modyul nang tapat.

Kinakailangan din ang long folder na magsisilbing portfolio ng mag-


aaral sa Homeroom Guidance. Dito isisilid lahat ng gawaing natapos sa bawat
bahagi ng modyul. Tiyaking maipapasa ito sa petsa at oras na itinakda ng
kanyang gurong-tagapayo.

you improve your academic skills. Moreover, there are activities that involve a deeper un-
derstanding of the essence of volunteerism that will help create a volunteer spirit in you.

This self-learning module has six indicative tasks, which are as follows:

16 CREATING A
VOLUNTEER SPIRIT

Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. establish the good effects of volunteerism in improving academic skills;


2. support volunteerism programs and activities that involve academic skills of learners;
3. evaluate effectiveness in conducting volunteerism; and
4. demonstrate volunteerism through environmental advocacies.

Period: Weeks 1 and 2 of 4th Quarter

Introduction

From the previous module, you have been acquainted with the world of work. In this module,
your sense of responsibility will be re-awakened as volunteerism becomes the central subject of dis-
cussion.

You already learned about the spirit of volunteerism throughout your journey as a learner but
this module is special as it highlights the value of volunteerism in nurturing your academic skills in
the thick of an urgent situation, such as the public health emergency caused by COVID-19. You will
gain ideas that will serve as your foundations and wings for your future success and most important-
ly, you will develop a compassionate personality and you can start to make a difference.

In this module, you will learn the value and benefits of volunteerism in the midst of a crisis
situation. You will be equipped with knowledge and ideas as to how and where you are going to
support programs and exhibit your eagerness to get involved, be that in school or in the community,
safely and responsibly.

the world of work and work standards. Through activities that were either self-directed or joined in by
a family member, your knowledge about the world of work has been deepened meaningfully.

Strengthening Volunteerism

Volunteerism is doing an action on your own will without expecting anything in return. When
you volunteer, you offer something important that is yours such as your time, your effort, your ideas
and your energy to do something that will benefit others. Volunteerism is often done and completed

with others who share your beliefs, advocacies and goals. Volunteerism is a great example of being
of service to a greater good.

In schools, learners demonstrate volunteerism by simply taking part in school activities such
as sharing one’s talents and abilities during school programs and convocations, leading classmates
come up to finish a project, supporting school programs and activities sponsored by the different
school organizations and clubs and volunteering to do the task without expecting something in re-
turn.

Volunteerism should not only be confined at home and in the school. You have to continu-
ously nurture the seeds of volunteerism up to your community, which will provide you with a big,
great platform to empower you to exercise becoming responsible. Persistent volunteers become
great leaders in the long run. Your experiences gained from your family and school as well as those
from the community shall play vital roles as you persevere to become a better person by gaining
practical know-how about important things and situations. Likewise, volunteerism develops out-
standing character in the lives of young learners like you so that you can truly start the difference
amongst yourselves.

As we all adjust to what we call the New Normal because of the current public health emer-
gency situation that we have, mass gatherings and close, personal interactions have been can-
celled. The avenues for volunteer works may have shifted but the spirit of volunteerism should be
nurtured and enhanced now more than ever.

Studies have suggested that learners who participate in volunteer works manifest higher self-
esteem and confidence. It can also help them gain new skills such as communication skills, leader-
ship, time management and decision-making skills.

For learners like you, volunteerism can greatly improve your academic skills. You can utilize
these skills later on in life to reach for your goals.

1. Volunteering helps develop your communication skills as well as your social skills. When
you volunteer, you meet new people, you make new friends and you interact with people of different
personalities and ages. Now that this pandemic happened, our social life is put on a standstill but
nevertheless, we can still make connections using online ways and methods.

2. Volunteering may aid in your general mental health. Because volunteering gives you a
sense of purpose and meaning in what you do and give, you feel more content and happy. Your
thoughts are not cluttered by your own worries and because your minds are occupied by the things
that you need to do, you are always mentally stimulated and much cheerful. This pandemic can
make you feel isolated at times but you must remember that this too shall pass, you just need to
hold strong.

3. Volunteering can help in decision making even in choosing your future career. While vol-
unteering, you can get valuable experiences that may aid you in making good and wise decisions.

4. Volunteering will enhance your leadership potential and problem-solving skills. When you
volunteer, you will learn that you have to think on your feet. You also need to come up with solutions
when you face sudden dilemmas. Volunteering will turn you into a leader because you will realize
that in your own way, you can make a difference.

5. Volunteering boosts your self-confidence. Putting yourself out there for a cause that you
believe in and for the benefit of others is an achievement in itself. Self-esteem can empower one in

making more commitments, in engaging in other projects and in knowing what is truly important in
this world.

The following are examples of safe volunteer works during a crisis situation such as the
COVID-19 pandemic that you can easily do as teenagers:

Assist your adult family members, especially the elderly, if they want to be familiar with
gadgets so that they can also be updated with current events and other relevant news and infor-
mation. It will also be a way for them to keep in touch with family members, friends and loved ones
they do not get to see in person because of the crisis situation

Use social media meaningfully and sensibly by not spreading fake news, constantly fact-
checking, observing cyber safety and being a responsible digital citizen

Follow government recommendations and orders strictly and advocate the importance of fol-
lowing rules in your various social media accounts
Write thank you or touching letters to people who are helping or who are being affected bythe
crisis situation and send it through e-mails
Volunteer at crisis center hotlines for teens with concerns or issues
Plant flowers or vegetables at home for your family to enjoy
Offer free music or dance lessons online
Post your opinions in social media about caring for the environment and share some ways on
how to show your love for nature

2. After reading, answer the processing questions below on a clean sheet of paper or bond paper.

MENSAHE NI TEACHER JAIME

"Gusto kong maipakita na hindi lahat na sumasailalim ngayong pasukan under new normal ay pare-
parehas ang sitwasyon, lalo na kaming mga guro sa kabukiran at ang mga estudyante namin doon.
Maraming pagsubok matugunan lang ang pangangailangan ng aming mga mag-aaral at ang aming si-
numpaang tungkulin. Pero hindi kami titigil kahit gaano man ito kahirap. Umulan man o umaraw handa po
kaming maglakad maihatid lang ang modyul at magabayan ang mga mag-aaral namin sa bukid.

Madalas binabatikos tayong mga guro lalo na sa panahon ngayon, pero nais ko sanang maipakita
na hindi sahod ang nag-uudyok sa'min para gawin ang aming gampanin. Sana makita ng publiko na
maraming kagaya naming mga guro na handang magsakripisyo at mahal talaga ang ginagawa namin."

Jaime Coralde III is a teacher at San Pedro National High School. The story was lifted from his documen-
tary entitled “Edukasyon sa Panahon ng Pandemya.”
