Module
The Plant and Animal Cells
4
What I Need to Know
In the previous module, you learned that there are different levels of Biological organization from
smallest to the biggest- cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem then
Biosphere.
The cell being the smallest and basic unit of life is considered completely alive. It is the basic
functional and structural unit of life because all organisms are made up of cells and all the functions of the
body (physiological, biochemical, genetics and other functions) are carried by the cell.
Most of the cells cannot be seen by our unaided eye, but because of the advancement in science and
the invention of the Microscope, the study how life is carried out in the smallest level of organization in an
organism is now being unlocked. Have you not wondered how do cells look like? Are all cells the same? If
not, in what ways are they different?
After completing this module, you are expected to:
 Differentiate plant and animal cells according to presence or absence of certain organelles (S7LT-
IIc-3) and explain why the cell is considered the basic structural and functional unit of all
organisms(S7LT-IIe-5).

In activity 1 and 2, You were refreshed that the whole living world and the Living organisms like
plants and animals are structured and organized into different levels, and the smallest level in the Biological
organization are called Cells.

What is it

Cells are considered as the basic structural and functional unit of life since all organisms are made
up of cells and all the functions that take place inside the body of the living organisms are performed by
cells. Through the advancement in Science and the invention of the Microscope, the details about cells are
being studied intensively. Cells are not all the same and each part of the cell has a unique job to perform!
That is why it is considered as the smallest living unit of an organism!

THE PARTS OF THE CELL AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Nucleus- serves as the
control center of the cell.
Plasma membrane/cell membrane- permits
some substances but prevents
others to pass through it.
Cytoplasm- a clear, jelly-like fluid that fills the
Figure 2. Source shorturl.at/hmtLO inside of the cell and surrounds all of the internal
structures and where all the rest of the parts of the
cell are found as well as the hosts of the processes
taking place inside the cell.
Vacuoles - are storage bubbles found in cells. They
are found in both animal and plant cells but are
much larger in plant cells that stores much water.
Scientists also called it vesicle in animal cells.
Vacuoles might store food or any variety of
nutrients a cell might need to survive. They can even store waste products so the rest of the cell is protected
from contamination. in some species of plant, it contains a poisonous substance to protect them against
their predator.
Centrioles- can only be found in animal cells and are structures needed for cell multiplication that will be
taken by you in higher science.
Mitochondrion- the powerhouse of the cell since it produces energy necessary for each and every single cell
to perfrom their jobs.

3
Golgi body/apparatus- the packaging center of the cell.it sorts, modifies, packages cell products where they
are needed.
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum- with attached ribosomes that manufacture proteins.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum- contains no ribosomes. It is the fat and lipids maker.
Ribosomes- the manufacturer of protein in the cell.
Nucleolus- the structure within the nucleus that produced ribosomes.
Lysosomes- the suicide bags of the cell. They destroy cell debris that are not useful anymore.
Cell wall- gives shape and protection for plant cells. It is only present in plant cell.
Chloroplast- the green organelle responsible for manufacturing food in the process called photosynthesis. It
is only present in plant cell.

What’s More

Now, you have learned that the cell is in itself living and performing the basic life processes for the
organism to sustain life, let us perform series of activities to understand more about cells and the difference
between plant and animal cells.

ACTIVITY 5: Feed Your Focus! 8

Directions: Identify what part of the cell is being pointed by the arrow in figure 3. Write your answer on the
space provided below the illustration

ACTIVITY 6: Tell me who I am! 12

Directions: Identify what part of the cell is being described in the riddle. Write your answer on the space
provided before each number. Item 1 is done for you.
4
Cytoplasm 1. I hold all the parts of the cell together as they float on me.
___________2. Everyone do what I say.I am in control.
___________3. I used light energy to make food.
___________4. I break down food to release energy.
___________5. I am stiff, I protect and give shape to plant cells.
___________6. Everything I touch, I destroy. I clean unuseful cell debris.
___________7. I am quite full of water. I am responsible for the crisp appearance of
the fresh vegetables.
___________8. If you were me, How would you want me? Soft or rough?
___________9. I am the workbench where proteins get manufactured.
___________10. I control what gets out as well as what comes out.
___________11.I am a series of tubes. I transport proteins as well as other things.
___________12. I pack things up for Delivery.

What I Have Learned

ACVITY 7: Share Similarities, Celebrate Differences!

Now we learned that Plants and Animal Cells have similarities and differences but all of the parts of their
cell are specialized for a specific purpose and regardless of what kind of cell, each is capable of carrying out
all the functions which are necessary for a living being. Perform activity 8 for you to be able to explain why
the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life.

ACTIVITY 8: A Cell-ebration! 7

Directions: Study figure 3 below and answer the questions that follow by ticking (√) the box of the correct
answer.

Figure 4

1. What is the basic unit or building blocks of all organisms base on the
picture?
Cells
Tissues
2. Why are cells considered as the structural and functional unit of life?
(Check only 7 )

All organisms are made up of cells.

All cells are capable to perform all essential functions of life and it is the
sole base for making the entire body of the organism.
Each organism starts its life as a single cell.
All functions that take inside the Body of organims are
performed by cells.
Cells are specialized to perform various tasks.
Only plants have cells and they are not alive.
All animals have cells that live and breathe.
The cell itself is the smallest fundamental unit of structure and function
in living organisms that is considered completely alive.
