Glass transition temperature test of polyester

What is glass transition temperature?

Glass transition temperature (Tg) is an important characteristic parameter of high
polymers. Glass transition temperature (Tg) refers to the temperature corresponding to the
transition from glass state to high elastic state.

Glass transition is an inherent property of amorphous polymer materials and a macroscopic

manifestation of the transition of polymer motion. It directly affects the performance and
process performance of materials, so it has been the main content of polymer physics research
for a long time. The glass transition temperature (Tg) is the lowest temperature at which
molecular chains can move, and its height is directly related to the flexibility of the molecular
chain. The more flexible the molecular chain is, the lower the glass transition temperature is; the
higher the rigidity of the molecular chain is, the higher the glass transition temperature is. .

Test method for glass transition temperature

Differential scanning calorimetry is one of the main methods to test the glass transition
temperature, with DSC as the column, when the temperature rises slowly, when the glass
transition temperature of the dry grouped polymer passes through, the baseline on the DSC
curve goes to Move in the direction of heat absorption. DSC characterizes the glass transition
temperature of materials by measuring the change of specific heat capacity of materials with
temperature. The specific heat capacity will change greatly before and after Tg, and the glass
transition temperature can be determined according to the curve. The glass transition
temperature is usually a step in the direction of heat absorption, and the glass transition is a
region. In this method, the intersection point of the line and the curve with the same distance
from the two extrapolated baselines is usually used as the glass transition temperature.

1. Selection of experimental equipment

The glass transition temperature test experiment is critical to the instrument selection, if the
accuracy is not up to the requirement. There will be two situations: one is that the region of
glass transition temperature is not obvious; the other is that there is no region of glass transition
temperature.
The glass transition temperature is also a long-term test of the differential scanning
calorimeter. Differential scanning calorimetry can not only measure glass transition problems,
but also cold crystallization, phase transition, melting, crystallization, thermal stability,
uring/crosslinking, oxidation induction period, etc., are all areas of research and development of

2. Experimental operation steps
(1) First take out two empty crucibles, put the tray on the left into the empty crucible, and
put the sample into the crucible on theright (take a piece of the sample and put it into the
crucible, the sample is fully in contact with the bottom of the crucible, and the powder is the
best.
(2) Connect to the computer and call the software to set the parameters. Taking the
polyester sample as an example, the cut-off temperature is set to 180 degrees Celsius, and the
heating rate is set to 10 degrees Celsius per minute. Atmosphere selection, choose air or inert
gas according to sample requirements.
3. Experimental analysis
