LEOPOLD’S MANEUVER

1st Maneuver

1. Hello, Ma’am! I am Marie Joy Andaya, a student nurse from Lorma Colleges. Today ma’am I will
be the one to show you how the 4 Leopold’s Maneuver done properly to identify your baby’s
position. For verification ma’am, may I know your name and age? Okay ma’am I will now close
the curtain for your privacy and put alcohol on the surface of my hands for hand hygiene.
2. You can first urinate on our comfort room ma’am so there will be no discomfort once we start
the assessment.
3. Allow the pregnant woman to lie a supine position with slightly knee reflex, and provide a rolled
towel on the left side of her back so that it will not cause any supine hypotension syndrome.
4. Now, I will wash my hand with warm water before holding the patient’s abdomen to avoid any
contamination.
5. Next, I will be observing the client’s abdomen and where the fetal movement is apparent.
6. Allow me to expose your belly ma’am and I will place my both hands on your abdomen. So I will
be facing the client and I will be forming a triangle.
7. I will palpate the superior surface of the fundus to observe necessary findings.
8. Determine the consistency, shape, and mobility. For the breech, it round, movable, and firm.
And for cephalic, it is soft and small. So the patient has also hard resistance.

2nd Maneuver

1. I will be facing the client again for the second maneuver.


2. I’ll place my hands on the abdomen;
3. And palpate the side of the uterus.
4. Observe that my left hand will be stationary for a while and my right hand will be palpating from
top to bottom.
5. Next is my right hand will be stationary this time and the left hand will do the palpation from top
to bottom again.

3rd Maneuver

1. Facing the client again, I will be forming an al-shape on my hand which is my index finger and my
thumb. I will place it right above the symphysis pubis to observe the degree of engagement. I
will now try to press it.
2. When I tried to move it upward it is immovable so it is engage. It is also soft.
3. For the fundic height measurement, I will be using my tape measure to identify the height
measurement of the baby. The cm part will be used, and follow the abdominal curve.

4th Maneuver

1. For the last maneuver which is the forth, I will be facing the foot part of the pregnant woman. I
will place my fingers on both sides of the uterus approximately 2 inches above the inguinal
ligaments. I will palpate or press it downward to inward.
The assessment is done and don’t forget to place your patient in a comfortable position. Always
remember to wash your hand and note all any finding you found on your patient. So that’s it for today
