Read the following text and try to understand it completely:
As a general rule, a unilateral mistake as to a material fact does not affect
the validity of the contract. However, if one party either knows or should
have known of the other party's erroneous belief, the mistaken party
may rescind the contract. To rescind is to cancel or avoid, placing the
parties in a position of status quo ante. Rescission, which is the act of
rescinding, must take place within a reasonable time, otherwise the right
is forfeited. It is in this way that the law prevents one party from taking
advantage of the other’s mistaken belief to the detriment of the latter.
However, relief is generally not available when the mistake results from
an individual's own negligence, as when a party either fails to read or
carelessly reads a document and later alleges he did not realize or
understand what it was that he signed.
