Hi there, I'm Kamila
@FASHIONCAREERSPLATFORM @KAMILALUCK

I am a fashion stylist, creative director, fashion educator & founder of Fashion

Careers Platform. I have been dreaming of working in the fashion industry ever
since I remember and I moved abroad from my home country Slovakia, to the UK
at the age of 18 to pursue my dream and study fashion styling & creative direction.
Throughout my university experience & breaking into the fashion industry I always
felt so left out & had to find a way for myself in the fashion industry. I didn’t know
anyone who had moved from my country to a bigger country before and got into
the industry. I wanted to not only be the person who makes my dream come true,
but also show everyone else that it is possible for them to dream big no matter
where they come from ! This is how Fashion Careers Platform became more than
just a social media. I started sharing my fashion journey & fashion knowledge on
TIKTOK & Instagram and gained an incredible audience of 100.000 followers in less
than 2 years ! I am inspiring fashion enthusiasts to get started on their fashion
journey and this e-book is my newest addition to a fashion career guidance !

mikeskovaaneta@gmail.com
welcome
I started out my fashion journey at the age of 16 when I created my Youtube channel, with the
idea of sharing my passion with a global audience. I have been constantly learning about new
fashion trends, watching every single fashion show and reading fashion books about the most
successful designers. As I was learning more and more about the fashion industry I started to
visualise my dream life and there was no going back. Later that year I discovered that what I enjoy
actually exists as a career called fashion styling. I found the courses related to it and applied for a
university course abroad. At the time I had no idea that 6 years later I would get the opportunity
to style a Hollywood celebrity, Letitia Wright for a commercial advert.

During my Fashion Styling & Creative Direction course I have worked as a Social Media Assistant
at various Fashion Brands, jobs within Public Relations, organising Photoshoots as a Studio
Coordinator. Worked alongside Celebrity Stylists & Personal Stylists in London as well as in
Marketing ! After finishing my degree I went straight into Business Masters & studied Creative
Enterprise within Fashion - with a future goal in mind - to start my own fashion business one day.

I have started my freelancing journey as a Fashion & Personal Stylist in 2019 and have been in
Styling ever since. I have been invited to London Fashion Week and I got to visit Paris for the first
time ! Last year I joined a Luxury Fashion Company to work in Marketing & Social Media and
develop my skills in Creative Direction. Last year I started my TikTok, sharing fashion career
inspiration @kamilaluck97 and at the beginning of this year I graduated as a Master of Art and
started an Instagram page Fashion Careers Platform. I started filming my fashion career videos to
guide others who share the same goals and dreams like me and introduce them to different
fashion career paths as I too grow on my own fashion journey.

Whether you are looking to get started on your fashion journey, go into
fashion school, looking for a way to break into fashion without any degree
or simply just to learn more about fashion I truly believe my e-book will be
your step by step guide to get started and make the right decision !

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH YOUR
FASHION JOURNEY & BUILDING AN
ONLINE PRESENCE
In a world full of "Devil Wears Prada" and "Emily In Paris", we can easily get confused about
the real “Fashion Industry” world and how does one even start ? If this is one of your
biggest questions, you have definitely made it to the right place ! So you want to work in
the fashion industry, where do you start ?

There are many different stories of successful fashion professionals and each is
individual and has its own unique interpretation of how they started. You may find that
some have paved their way through fashion school whilst some others have been
working towards their dream career since a very young age and without education, some
may have studied something completely different to fashion yet made it to the TOP of the
fashion industry ! However one thing is for sure, there are no shortcuts. You have to be
willing to put in the work to get to where you want to be and if you are ready to get
started - I am here to help you find your way in !

Building an Online Presence
When it comes to getting started in the fashion industry, the most important place where
you can be is online ! No matter where you are based, you can get started via social
networks as well as keep a tab on the latest fashion trends. Use search engines to
research the fashion industry, different fashion career options, content creator networks
and social media trends. Most organisations or fashion companies will have their jobs
listed on their websites or you can alternatively look up some fashion hub websites that
are used for jobs in the fashion industry. Social media networks can be a great way into
the fashion industry as long as you utilise them right !

How I utilised my online presence to get into Fashion

Before I moved abroad to study fashion at university, I started my fashion journey online
in my home country Slovakia. I felt so left out of the global fashion industry as my country
is relatively small and far away from anything exciting that would happen in the fashion
world, so I had no choice. I started writing fashion trends related blogs when I was 11, I
launched my own fashion page on Facebook when I was 12 and I would rate celebrity red
carpet outfits up until I was about 15 ! Through researching about the designers and
stylists who were dressing celebrities I found out more about the role of a fashion stylist !
I would create couple styling boards every day after my high school and I would be
looking forward to coming home from my classes just to create some new outfits ! At the
time I had no idea about virtual styling or personal styling but that is exactly what I was
doing - my 15 year old self has no idea I would be styling celebrities one day, or working
as a virtual stylist. But it was all these experiences and years that got me to where I am
right now. At the age of 16, I started my Youtube channel, this has introduced me to
content creation and digital marketing. I would post fashion styling & lifestyle content and
talk about fashion trends. After building my audience to 10,000 at the age of 17 I have
utilised my platform to launch a limited edition fashion hair accessories collection ! This
was at a point where I knew I really wanted to get into fashion and study it the next year
at university. As much as I really enjoyed creating handmade hair bows, I also needed
money to help me to move abroad, to study & get started on my journey. I have sold out
all of them in one week - through my Instagram and Youtube. The reason why I wanted to
tell you all of this in detail is that I have never studied fashion at any school before going
to university, yet it was all I wanted to do and I found a way in through an online
presence. So if you are anything like me and you don’t live in a fashion capital whilst you
are still in high school, this is your sign to create your way into fashion with your online
presence - trust me it will be worth it !

Start your
fashion journey
with your online
presence
Fashion bloggers are everywhere, every
platform you look at you can see
content creators ! In my opinion, being
a content creator is the perfect way to
get started with your fashion journey,
via enhancing your online presence. You
will gain many important skills, you will
develop strong trend research as well as
learn about different fashion brands
and fashion styling or photography. If
you enjoy writing, you can use this
opportunity to build up your fashion
journalism portfolio and starting up
your journey as a freelance writer /
content creator. If you want to work in
fashion, utilising social media to benefit
you as a learning curve, will only help
you progress further and there is no
better time to start than right now !
With the speed at which the fashion
industry operates, everything is going to
be moving more and more into the
digital world - you might as well be
prepared for it.

Get creative about fashion industry events
Over the last couple of years I have heard many successful stories about fashion industry
events, leading to a fashion job or interview invite - you simply just never know who you
will meet or talk to ! I would suggest attending as many events as you are able to,
whether it’s in person or online.Trust me, networking skills will land you a job faster than
the best fashion school in the world.

Your next mission: Research any fashion professionals in your area or upcoming fashion
events, networking events and sign up ! Don’t get discouraged if the first event is not
successful - there will be plenty more and each one is there to teach you something new
and work on your networking skills. As the saying goes, "If you never ask, the answer will
always be no."

Volunteer at Fashion Week

There are many ways you can volunteer at fashion weeks, you can either go through
fashion stylists working in the backstage, event organisers, helping out dressing the
models in backstage, assisting with social media coverage, writing an article for fashion
magazine or even reach out to a fashion influencer in your area and ask if they need help
taking some fashion content during a fashion show. All of those would be a great learning
experiences and opportunities to see what fashion week is like, as well as get to see some
of the fashion shows. PS: One of my first work experiences was volunteering for 10 days
at a local fashion show as a stylist and production assistant - I really enjoyed it and I got
to see what it’s like in real life !

Your next mission: Research any fashion weeks or fashion shows in your area, find out
who the event organiser is, check the fashion designers and their schedule, find out if
there are any PR emails that you can find online or their professional social media
platforms. Prepare your CV, portfolio or a cover letter explaining why you would be a
great fit for them ! Keep reading to learn more about how to write the best CV or cover
letter :)

Work In Fashion Retail
If you have no previous work experience in fashion and you are just getting started -
getting a job in fashion retail can be one of the first steps to take ! It may not be as
glamorous as working backstage at fashion week, but with hard work and patience this
job can take you places. Consider this the start of your fashion journey, you will get to
learn how to speak to customers, all about the market of the customer base as well as
personal styling when you are helping the customers, so eventually when you go into
other careers such as buying, merchandising, styling or design you will be able to use
everything you have learnt from working in retail ! This can be a great starting point that
can launch you into your dream career.

Freelance for Online Magazines & Work as a Freelance Stylist

Once you feel more confident about working in the fashion industry and you have
developed knowledge through different job roles, work experiences or fashion courses,
you can then alternatively start your journey as a freelancer !

Freelancing is a great way to start building connections at magazines, even if there are no
full-time roles available for what you might want to do. It is doing a service for someone
at a price you both agree on for a particular project or a time. It is a lot more flexible with
timings than working a regular 9-5, however it does come with its own risk, as all the
income is up to you. It involves not just the creative aspects but also tough business
decisions that you have to make as an individual and as an excellent time manager. You
can be a freelance writer, graphic designer, photographer, stylist or social media
manager. As long as you have a few relevant samples of your work to send to fashion
publications, fashion brands or fashion editors - you can start your freelance journey
whilst you are studying. I have been a freelance stylist for a couple years now and I am
still working as one now ! If you are first starting your freelance journey I strongly advise
you do so whilst working part-time in a job role.

@FASHIONCAREERSPLATFORM PAGE 8
mikeskovaaneta@gmail.com
02
Fashion Internships
Out of all the ways you can get into the fashion industry, fashion internships are your
speed ticket in ! Whether you want to gain valuable experience or simply impress the
company enough to hire you full-time after. Fashion internships are the best way to
find out what you are interested in and if the area you want to start your career in is
the right one for you ! You may find that working within your dream job role is not
actually what you expected or want and this is a great time to focus on investing the
time into finding out which role you enjoy the most.

There is a lot of hard work & compromise in fashion internships, you have to put a lot
of time into the thing you love for little or no pay to invest into your future. Fashion
internships are either unpaid or paid and it is up to you to decide which one you would
like to focus on, or you’re able to take on. I was able to take up 3 unpaid internships
whilst studying because I was also working part-time. However, after that I told myself I
will only look for paid internships, because just like many other students renting their
houses, I was no longer able to afford doing unpaid internships in London. I managed
to find paid ones in London whilst studying and a styling job where I was able to work
from home. My biggest advice is to focus on paid internships straight away as I
genuinely believe unpaid internships should not even be a thing !

Internships are the best way into the industry and gaining new connections, or even landing
your full-time role if you have the drive and ambition to get through the first couple months.
The more fashion internships you do, the more people you will meet and if you impress them
enough to remember you that is your true win !

You really have to take full advantage of the internship period of your life, because that
is how you build your strong foundation when entering the fashion industry ! When you
land your fashion internship role, make sure you go in with the right mindset. The
people you work with will remember you, whether it is working there for 4 weeks or 1
year. Most of the time, the little details really make all the difference. You have the
power to impress everyone & build a long-lasting, professional relationship whilst being
recommended for the full-time dream job position at the company !

INTERNSHIPS
You can find fashion internships and work placement quite
easily in the fashion industry so always stay tuned with
relevant fashion pages, such as business of fashion, fashion
workie or social media & LinkedIn pages. You can also
approach the brands and companies you would like to intern
for ! A few days ago I saw a TIK TOK video about being
delusional when applying for your dream job and I truly
believe that if you never ask the answer will always be no -
so you might as well email VOGUE magazine right now and
give it a try. You never know, you might be the next Anna
Wintour ! Besides giving you a lot of work experience,
internships and work placements will prepare you for the
real fashion industry. Not the aesthetically pleasing one, but
the one full of hard work. It will teach you perseverance,
strong work ethic and staying focused and determined
through many obstacles and challenges.

02
Fashion School or Online Course
If you are looking to start your fashion career via studying at fashion school or university
this one's for you ! There are many fashion schools, colleges and universities around the
world as well as online fashion courses. The biggest question I get asked nearly every
single day on my Fashion Careers Platform page is - Do I need a fashion degree to work
in fashion ? I myself am a believer that a fashion degree will provide you with the
knowledge you need for the industry, however you will also need a working experience
whilst studying to gain the relevant skills that can only be gained in the real world
outside of any educational organisation. As someone who moved abroad to study
fashion and start my career, I would simply never dared to move to a different country
and follow my dream career without securing the degree first hence why I made the
decision to apply for a fashion school.

However, you will be happy to hear that many people who work in the fashion industry either
do not own a fashion degree or have studied something completely unrelated and only gained
fashion experience via working, so no matter which way you go - there’s always the risk and
the reward of knowing that you are not the first or last person to have done this.

When choosing to attend a fashion school, you will simply need to evaluate your costs,
pro’s and con’s as well as many other factors included and this is the kind of decision
that nobody else should make for you. When I applied for the university I was 100% sure
this is what I want to do and I knew that this would help me to move to the UK and start
my dream career. It’s been a difficult decision to leave my home country but I felt the
calling and looking back, every single experience and decision has led me to where I am
right now and I could not be more grateful for choosing to study fashion. Being at
university has taught me a strong work ethic as I had to work part-time whilst keeping
up with all the deadlines for my university projects. I have gained valuable life
experience by learning how to live alone and be independent and only rely on myself. I
have also met many friends for life and got to represent the university as a student
ambassador. I would not give this up for anything as this was a crucial part of my fashion
journey and I would recommend university to anyone who wants to start their fashion
career whilst also wanting to study at university as well ! If you are not sure whether
university is for you, you can always opt for a short fashion course or online course to
see if this is something you would enjoy ! PS: If you are looking for the perfect course to
get started on your fashion journey stay tuned as I will be launching one very soon !

BUILDING YOUR
FASHION PORTFOLIO
Your fashion portfolio plays a big role in your fashion journey ! Whether you want to
attend a fashion school, secure a fashion job role or simply just showcase your creative
work, in the fashion industry besides a resume and cover letter - a portfolio is a must
have. Some of the most frequent questions surrounding portfolios are:

What should I include in one ?

Why do I need a fashion portfolio ?
How many pages does it need to have ?
Can you create a suitable portfolio for different fashion careers paths ?
Shall I make my portfolio digital or keep it as a physical book ?

To help you fulfil your dream fashion career, internship or school place, I am here to offer
you the best tips on how to make your portfolio stand-out while remaining professional,
creative and shining through your unique visual communication & impact !

@FASHIONCAREERSPLATFORM PAGE 13
mikeskovaaneta@gmail.com
03
What is a Fashion Portfolio?
There are two types of Fashion Portfolio - Personal Portfolio & Specific Portfolio.
Your Personal Portfolio showcases all the creative work you have accomplished and
demonstrates your skills that you have developed and perfected ! If you specialise in one
category for example: fashion design or fashion styling, your personal portfolio will
embody that. If you have various skills and creative projects this is the time to express
them. It should reflect your personal style, what makes you unique & shine with your
authentic perception of how you see fashion and the world around you. This type of
portfolio is the perfect way to discover what you feel the most drawn to. If you are
getting started on your fashion journey, as well as apply for fashion school.

Depending on the course you are applying for, here’s some of the creative work examples you
can include in your portfolio:

moodboards
trends research - including your favourite
trends for the upcoming season &
predictions
fashion show review
marketing campaign research
fashion illustrations & sketches
exhibition review
fashion styling or design projects
fashion photography examples
any creative work or relevant work
experience

Specific Portfolio is what you create to secure a fashion job ! This type of Portfolio is
specifically tailored for a role or career you want to pursue and includes the best
examples of your work that match the criteria to be the perfect candidate for an
interview !

@FASHIONCAREERSPLATFORM PAGE 14
mikeskovaaneta@gmail.com
03
Do you really need a Fashion Portfolio ?
Imagine a room with someone you really want to work for and telling them everything
you do and describe every detail of your fashion design ! And now, imagine you had a
printed or digital book with you to present to them, with every single design you have
created, every single fashion styling project you have worked on and an image of the
fashion collection - what difference do you think this would make ? Whether you already
have a full CV/resume with a perfectly written cover letter or you are just getting started
with no experience in the fashion industry - Fashion Portfolio is here to save the day !
Portfolio gives you the opportunity to show what you do and how you do it, regardless of
the experience you have had or not having any ! Inside your CV - you can list all your skills
and work experiences, however it is the portfolio that brings them to life and showcases
how you have efficiently managed to turn your skills and knowledge into a creative
project.

How many pages does it need to have ?

My biggest tip is to keep it short and sweet, capture the attention by curating the best of
your creative work from the first page to the very last. I personally would go for 5 pages if
you are getting started and if you have more experience - feel free to go up to 10 or
more. Quality over quantity is the key. If you are getting started they will appreciate that
you have put in an effort into creating one without having any previous experience ! If
you are applying for a specific brand or fashion school you can even include one page
dedicated to them ! This will showcase that you are willing to use your creativity towards
their visuals and brand image and give you that little boost !

Can you create a suitable portfolio for different fashion careers paths ?

Fashion Portfolio is your entrance ticket to the fashion industry. Whilst there are some job
roles where portfolio is a plus, some of them will require it and will be very specific in what to
include or not ! It is perfect for your first internship, your first entry level position, freelance
jobs but also senior positions. However, if you are only getting started and you have no
previous experience or you are still studying, you can still fill your portfolio with interesting
creative projects to build it up and get it started.

@FASHIONCAREERSPLATFORM PAGE 15
mikeskovaaneta@gmail.com
03
Fashion Journalism
For example, if you enjoy writing but you have never had any fashion article published yet
or worked at a fashion magazine, you can include your favourite articles that you have
written, or a trend report from the latest season ! This will demonstrate that despite not
having any industry experience, you have worked on your skills and you are more than
capable of getting your first experience as a fashion writer !

Social media & marketing

If you enjoy working on social media and you want to get started, you can create your
own social media portfolio where you demonstrate how well you can run a page, create
reels or TikToks and time manage every single post, create interesting stories and videos.
Show that you know how to capture the attention of an audience. If you are able to
demonstrate that you are capable of running a social media page by yourself - especially
with a gen Z audience, without any industry experience, you will be one step ahead of the
game ! Fun fact: This is how I secured my first fashion internship working for a fashion brand.
I have been working on my social media since I was 16 and by the time I was 18 and studying
at fashion school, I have built an online audience with really good statistics on my Instagram &
Youtube - when I applied for a social media & marketing internship this was highlighted to me
as a key factor - because despite having no previous experience I was able to demonstrate it
with my online fashion portfolio !

Fashion styling
Styling portfolios can include any projects you have styled or even the campaigns from
the times you have been holding a coffee for the actual stylist ! (Just kidding - that was
very important role) If you are working as a fashion stylist assistant, asking to help out
during Photo shoot will come in handy and you will be able to include it in your portfolio !

Fashion Design
For fashion design, the portfolio should include a collection of mood boards, sketches,
illustrations, inspirational images from collections / designers / art works, fabric samples,
CAD drawings, in summary a step by step process of creating the final fashion design !

@FASHIONCAREERSPLATFORM PAGE 16
mikeskovaaneta@gmail.com
03
Digital Portfolio or Physical Book ?
The easiest and fastest way to create a fashion portfolio is online ! You can
submit it online or share it via a link with the relevant fashion school or fashion
job recruiter. You can choose the size and export it as PDF or even build a
website or social media page instead ! One website I would highly recommend if
you are just getting started is CANVA - you can find many different templates
and simply follow the step by step tutorial. If you would be interested in creating
one with my supervision, make sure to stay tuned with my social media, as I will
be launching a special course where we can go step by step together and create
one that is perfect for you !

However, if you are applying for a fashion school or if you are looking to create
something epic and turn up at a VOGUE building with a physical book of your
fashion designs to shoot your shot - I am nowhere near to tell you not to !
Physical fashion portfolio has its own magic and it is up to you to decide what is
the best way that works for you, as well as the reason behind your fashion
portfolio. When I applied for a fashion school in 2015 I created mine as a
physical one. I had cut out pages from a magazine and put them together into a
moodboard. As much as this is definitely not a requirement now, I have really
enjoyed it and it was an unforgettable experience ! I got to discover what I enjoy
the most and create unique projects that set me up for the start of my fashion
journey and if you are waiting for a sign to get started, this is it.

Trust me, once you create your

first fashion portfolio, it will only
get better & and each time you
will be able to look back and be
proud of how far you have come.
So what are you waiting for ?

fashion publicists is to generate awareness for their brands - this can be any coverage
from online media, press coverage, red carpets or high profile fashion shows. You might
also coordinate with stylists to run a successful fashion show, monitor press outlets and
ensure that the press positively covers your company events. If the above-mentioned
duties seem interesting to you, a public relations career might be calling your name !

b) Fashion Editor
Expressive, life of the party and dreaming of being the main character in your own Devil
Wears Prada story ? If working for a fashion magazine has always been your dream, fashion
editor is the perfect career role for you !

As a Fashion Editor, you are generally responsible for supervising the overall process of
creating, planning, developing, managing and presenting content for fashion-specific
magazines, photo shoots, websites, newspaper sections, or television shows.Creating
storylines and producing story ideas, choosing photo-shoot locations, collaborating with
a multidisciplinary team of journalists, stylists & fashion experts, keeping abreast of
latest fashion trends via attending fashion shows and building relationships with
designers and industry professionals - these are some of the day to day duties and
responsibilities. No day is the same and there is always a lot of excitement surrounding
everything you do ! To be successful as a fashion editor, you should be creative and be
able to inspire a team of journalists to produce an extraordinary content that fits the
brand's style and target market. Ultimately, an outstanding fashion editor should be
fashion-conscious and innovative.

c) Fashion Designer
Love to study fashion trends, sketch designs, select materials and turn your wildest visions
into reality ? Fashion designers hold a special place in our world and you are on the best way
to become one !

Your talent and vision play a big role in how people look, and also contribute to the
cultural and social environment. As a fashion designer there is no limit in what you can
create & how you can create it ! You'll research current fashion trends, forecasting what
will be popular with consumers, and take inspiration from the world around you to
create fresh and original designs. You'll decide on fabrics, colours and patterns, produce
sample designs and adjust them until you're happy with the final product. You may work
to your own brief or be given a brief to work towards, with specifications relating to
colour, fabric and budget. In large companies, you're likely to work as part of a team of
designers, headed by a creative director, whereas if working for a small company as a
sole designer or for yourself, you'll be responsible for all the designs. From women's,
men's and children's apparel, sportswear, maternity wear, outerwear, underwear,
formalwear, eyewear to footwear. There are also accessory designers who design belts,
scarves, hats, handbags, and hosiery.

d) Trend Forecaster
Always ahead of trends and interested in being invited to fashion shows, just to analyse what
the models wear ? A trend forecaster is responsible for identifying new trends and predicting
how those trends will shape a certain industry !

As a trend forecaster you will be in charge of researching and formulating predictions on

consumers' future buying habits. By identifying the source, tracing the evolution, and
recognising patterns of trends, you will be able to provide designers and brands with a
‘vision’ of the future. As a forecaster, your daily tasks and responsibility will be to
research and identify social, cultural, ethical or environmental shifts, and how they are
likely to affect future consumer behaviour. Through this process, you can identify
products and services that consumers will be looking to buy. This role is perfect for
someone who is very innovative, analytical and goal oriented. You are able to spot the
trend before it’s even a thing ! Trend forecasting can help validate a design idea or
direction for all fashion brands, helping them know which trends to act on & when - so
this role is very crucial in the fashion industry !

e) Fashion Business Owner
It takes more than an eye for fashion to become an apparel business owner and you have got
all it takes to follow this path ! If you always dreamed about being your own boss and starting
up your fashion business - this one's for you.

As a fashion business owner you may own a retail shop or online shop that sells clothing
and accessories made by other designers, your own designs, or a combination of both.
Whether the shop sells the owners designs or not, as an apparel business owner, you are
responsible for every aspect of the business from the layout and design of the shop to
buying to marketing to accounting. If the shop sells your own designs exclusively, you are
also responsible for production and distribution. A degree is not required, but many
fashion business owners do have a degree in fashion design, fashion merchandising,
fashion retailing, business, business management, or marketing. As a fashion business
owner you will not focus solely on designing clothes but you will spend a significant
amount of time managing every other aspect of the business as well ! Out of all the
fashion careers previously mentioned, I would say being a fashion business owner is the
most uncertain yet the most rewarding one because you get to be your own boss and
build your own empire - how exciting that is !

f) Fashion Stylist
If you always wanted to shop for a living, have the eye for the perfect outfit for any occasion
and love to be a part of the glamour world in the fashion industry, welcome to the fashion
styling club !

As a fashion stylist you can work for individuals, fashion houses and clothing brands.
Your main responsibilities include providing fashion advice, choosing and coordinating
outfits for models in photoshoots or actors in television and film or choosing props and
accessories and preparing them for shoots. Stylists could work in any of the following
areas: Personal Styling, E-commerce Styling, Commercial, Catwalk, Still life, Product,
Social Media, Film & Television Industry - the options are endless. The job description is
wide-ranging but some of the typical tasks would include attending runway shows, brand
showrooms and different fashion industry events to keep a track on the latest trends and
build a genuine relationship with fashion professionals. Researching different fashion
eras that would suit the photoshoot, brand or your personal client is important in order
to fully understand the concept & pull the perfect outfit ! Sourcing clothing from
worldwide known brands and manufacturers or styling celebrities for the red carpet -
this all can be a part of your dream career as a fashion stylist !

THE LATEST FASHION
TRENDS & INDUSTRY
So you want to keep up with the latest fashion industry trends but don’t know how to get
started ? I have prepared 6 easy ways to keep up-to-date with fashion trends and fashion
industry trends as a beginner !

Fashion trends and fashion industry trends are changing very fast, often before you know
it, there is another new trend starting just around the corner. What was popular last year
or even last week might not be popular anymore especially due to fast changing
development of social media trends. This is why it is important to know where to go, to
stay in tune and don’t miss out !

Fashion Weeks
Fashion Weeks are located across the globe, you may find them in New York, London,
Paris, Milan but they are usually only held every 3 months. Most fashion weeks provide
you with the latest fashion trends and the good thing is that recently most of them went
digital and became more accessible for everyone to enjoy. So if you are not able to attend
one you can always get a full access to the Fashion Show via Vogue Runway (website &
app) They are usually organised by the latest shows, designers or seasons & you can go
back to the archive and scroll through older ones - this platform is your new go-to !

TOP TIP: The best way of staying on top of fashion weeks & trends is by keeping up with the
schedules online and following them as they go on or after the week is finished. You can create
a google docs and go through every collection and create a folder that will be your own
“collection and archive of fashion shows” you will be able to always refer back to it with any of
your fashion projects or upcoming fashion interviews, when you need to create a portfolio
based on trends research ! Good Luck <3

FASHION
MAGAZINES
Magazines are the perfect way of staying up to date with
fashion trends, marketing campaigns or fashion industry
news - as well as the perfect way for finding out more about
fashion professionals. My biggest advice when it comes to
fashion magazines is to use them for your benefit and as
your resource. As you open the magazines, the front pages
will always include a list of everyone who has worked on the
fashion magazine - from Fashion Editor to Stylist Assistant !
If you are up for a little bit of "Devil Wears Prada" as your
starting point - this is your time to put on an FBI hat, and go
through their professional LinkedIn to see what roles have
led them there. This can be a great way to connect with
someone and apply for a job directly through someone who
already works in your dream fashion magazine. ( Remember
to keep this professional, within LinkedIn only and no
personal stalking ! )

MY FASHION SCHOOL
EXPERIENCE

My Fashion School
Experience
When I first entered the fashion industry I
had no previous industry experience besides
my online presence on social media and one
year of my university degree. I started with
my social media at a very young age, hence
how I got into fashion and I moved to
England to study at university at the age of
18. After one year of studying fashion I really
wanted to experience what it’s like to
actually work in the industry and decided to
find work experience in London whilst I was
studying. It’s been difficult at the beginning
and I have got many no’s as I didn’t really
know how to even get started, but I just kept
going. Eventually after endless scrolling,
editing of my CV’s at night, I have found a
fashion styling voluntary role and social
media & marketing assistant internship and
they opened the doors into the industry for
me. The most important thing I would like to
share in this chapter is that everyone has a
different path and that’s okay. I have
entered the fashion industry via moving
abroad and studying fashion at university, as
well as working on the side as a fashion
intern. However, there are many fashion
professionals who either never went to uni,
had no fashion education at all, but worked
their way through the fashion industry
through different fashion work experiences
and networking with relevant people.

& Here is the truth...
When I applied for my fashion university, I was at high school studying regular subjects
such maths, physics, languages and I was absolutely dreading going there because I
didn’t feel fulfilled or happy with what I was studying and deep down all I really wanted
was to go to a fashion school. I visualised myself walking down the halls you see in the
movies and going to fashion shows after school and spending every single day in the
dream fashion school aesthetic lifestyle. After finishing high school my dream came true
and it was exactly how I pictured it in my vision; however the sad truth is that most of the
time, living your dream comes with a sacrifice. I am extremely grateful to have had this
opportunity and I never ever took it for granted because I know how privileged I am, to
be able to have this experience but I want to be real and share the truth about moving
abroad to follow your dream. What I remember as my first couple months of memories is
missing my family so much and crying as soon as they left because I was alone in a new
country where I didn’t know anyone. I was out there finally living my dream but every
weekend my classmates went home to their families and spent their weekends together.
While I stayed in the library reading fashion books and educating myself because I could
not afford to get a plane ticket home to visit my family that often. If you move abroad as
a student, unless you have lots of savings or you come from a wealthy background you
have to find a part-time job to pay for your rent, bills, food and everything you would
need at university. I used to hustle part-time jobs, fashion internships and my studies. At
one point I remember working as a bartender at night, going to uni in the morning and
then getting my train to go to London (the journey was around 2hours) and work as a
fashion celebrity stylist assistant at a TV Show and then next morning get up super early
to work on a social media team for an Open Day at my University.
24 hours were not quite enough sometimes.

Don’t get me wrong, despite how tough it felt in the beginning, it got much better and I
had the best time of my life ! Looking back now, by taking every opportunity that would
come my way and saying yes to learning new things and meeting new people, I have
gained a once in a lifetime experience. Throughout my journey I got to meet incredible
people in my university, make friends for life, as well as gain knowledge via my
internships and part-time jobs. I got to truly embrace the social life at university, while
also spending enormous time in the library working on fashion projects. I got to work
with celebrities I never thought I would even see in real life. I was hustling my whole 5
years there but I would never have it any other way. After I settled in my new home, I felt
so happy and fulfilled with what I was doing and the fashion career path I chose and I
have never looked back since.

FASHION STYLING

& CREATIVE
DIRECTION
My first degree I studied was Fashion Styling & Creative Direction
and one of the first projects was a full photoshoot with a specific
styling brief. I felt like I was finally in my element ! Some of the
other projects included Trend Research for Trend Forecasting,
Photography, Make-up & Hairstyle, Fashion Styling Photoshoots,
Fashion Journalism, Social Media, Fashion History, Editorial
Styling for Fashion Magazine & my optional module I chose was
Fashion Business ! I have enjoyed every element of my studies
and I genuinely felt like I was living in "Devil Wears Prada" every
single day. Whilst studying I have done many Internships in
London - from PR, to Social Media & Celebrity Styling, volunteered
at Fashion Weeks & Fashion Shows and I was soaking in every
single detail. My biggest advice when you’re studying fashion is to
take every opportunity to learn something new and network with the
people from the industry. Leave something behind that will make
everyone on your fashion internship remember you !

mikeskovaaneta@gmail.com
07
After finishing my bachelor degree, deep down I always knew I wanted to have my own
fashion business one day and when I got offered to continue in my Master Degree I have
decided to go for Creative Enterprise related to fashion business. It was completely
different to studying fashion and I felt like I was back in my maths class sometimes ! I had
projects in Branding, Economics, Business, Marketing & PR as well as Finance (my actual
biggest nightmare but also the biggest challenge) and went through every single thing
you need in order to run a successful business or become an entrepreneur. This has led
me to start with freelancing as a fashion stylist and social media manager. When the
pandemic started, I was in the middle of my last year of finishing my degree and had to
completely change my whole final project to an online version & just like everyone I had
to adapt to the circumstances. Despite the sad and sudden end in the middle of a
lockdown, I can honestly say that I have had the best 5 years of my life and I am so
extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to study something I love at university !

Thinking of studying fashion, but not sure if it’s your right choice ? I would suggest visiting
the schools and universities you are interested in and asking them all the questions you
want to know ! If this is in a different country you can also e-mail them about your
concerns and request an online viewing - I have done this with my university. You can
also take up an online course in your career choice such as fashion styling or fashion
management and see if you enjoy it or not ! Alternatively you can take a year off and try
and pursue the fashion industry without your degree if you are not 100% sure it’s for you
and take a fashion internship. This will help you gain a real understanding of how the
fashion industry works and which role would be the best for you. If you want to know
more about fashion internships and how to secure one: head over to my next chapter ! :)

INTERNSHIP IN THE
FASHION INDUSTRY

08
SECURING YOUR
FASHION INTERNSHIP
Are you looking to gain work experience and break into the fashion industry ? Internships
are the perfect way to get started and in this chapter I am going to guide you through
step by step tips and tricks you can do to land your first fashion internship !

Do the research
Before getting started with your fashion internship browse, grab your laptop or notebook
and start with a little brainstorming around which fashion internship would you be
interested in the most ! Having specific goals will help you with narrowing down what
fashion career you have the most interest in & helping you navigate your fashion CV and
portfolio to match it. If you are not sure which jobs to look for, you can also research
fashion professionals that you look up to within the fashion industry and go through how
they started. Maybe the first ever position they got was a social media assistant or junior
fashion editor & now they are the Editor-in-Chief at your favourite fashion magazine ! If
there is one bit of advice I would give to you it is, do not base your whole fashion career
on your first internship. The reason behind a fashion internship is to get a soft launch
into what it is like to have this fashion role as well as to see whether you enjoy it or not.
Internships are excellent opportunities in discovering who you are and what you are
really good at, however sometimes you can also find that the dream career you wanted is
nothing like you imagined and you would much rather do something else & that’s
completely okay ! Both case scenarios you will learn something new & discover who you
are a bit more ! As I like to say, every single internship just means you are one step closer
to your dream fashion career :)

Organise your internships search & start applying
The method that really helped me with staying on top of all the internships, was creating
a template for my fashion internships search. You can do this via Excel / Google Docs /
Canva. This will help you with knowing which organisation you have applied for, when
and any application progress:

Create a section for:

a) E-mails sent
b) LinkedIn Application
c) FashionWorkie / Indeed Applications
d) Company Websites Applications

In each row you can include:

a) The brand name you are applying for
b) The e-mail address where you sent your application
c) The contact name of the person that you have sent your e-mail to
d) The internship role that you have applied for
e) Progress ( Application to be sent / Done )
f) Response - Viewed Application, Interview, Responded, Declined, Job Offer
(You can use different colours for different responses to keep it more organised ! )

FASHION CV
& COVER LETTER

09
Building Your Fashion CV
Besides your Fashion Portfolio, if you are looking to apply for your first internship or kick
start your journey into the industry - you will need a Fashion CV ! Before you get invited to
an interview you will be judged through your portfolio & CV and that’s why you have to
make sure it’s perfect and includes everything relevant to the job. This is your chance to
write down all your best achievements, what you have worked on whilst you were at high
school / university, any work experience you had and highlight all your skills that make you
the best candidate ! So how do you stand out from the rest ? I put together a little step by step
guide:

Customise your CV - find a template that works for you & the job you are applying for:
there are lots of different templates on Pages / Canva when you search for “CV” or if you
are feeling creative you can even design one yourself using Adobe Photoshop.

How long does it have to be ?

Keep it short and sweet, this might actually be the hardest part but I would suggest keeping
it to 1 PDF page or maximum 2 PDF pages, you will also have a cover letter to write !

What do you include ?

Start with your Personal Information - make sure to add relevant contact information if the
hiring manager wants to get in touch with you. This includes your name, address, mobile
number and email. Add your social media links to your portfolio or website !

Summary or Profile - small paragraph at the beginning of your CV - this is the “Tell me
about yourself” question every employer is so eager to ask ! Keep it short, interesting,
relevant to the job role you are applying for. Highlight your best qualities.

Education - demonstrate your background, if you have not previously studied fashion do
not worry - you can still feature your high school and explain how you have developed your
skills outside, despite not having fashion or art subjects or by volunteering positions.

@FASHIONCAREERSPLATFORM PAGE 43
mikeskovaaneta@gmail.com
09
Building Your Fashion CV
Work Experience - This is your time to highlight any previous work experience that makes
you stand out ! Just like your summary this should be relevant to your job role that you
are applying for (for example if you interned at Fashion Week or helped organised a
fashion show at your local school, mention this to stand out)

Skills & Key Responsibilities - This CV section is the best way to show off all the skills that
make you the perfect candidate ! These can include a variety of transferable skills you
have gained in other work positions that can be incorporated into fashion ! (for example
if you worked in customer service or hospitality as your part-time job in uni but you want
to work in fashion events, use this to show how great at communication you are & that
you can multitask while remaining dedicated to the customer needs and wants etc.)

Achievements - Highlight your important achievements, this can be any awards,

volunteering roles, creative projects you have done or any work / school projects you
have successfully completed - this can showcase how ambitious you are and that you like
to challenge yourself in order to learn something new.

Once it’s been perfected and you can start applying to places, make sure that the CV
corresponds with what the job is asking for ! Remember to keep it up to date and add every
internship or new experience you have had since your previous applications. "A resume is an
indicator of how you think & how you present yourself and the first example of what an
employer can expect of your work product," says Joyce Chang, editor-in-chief of Self. Recently
there has been a huge trend of creating “creative resumé” , some of them written in a template
that resembled the cover story from a fashion magazine they were applying for ! You can
either be super creative or stick to a template, the choice is all yours - make sure the CV
represent who you are as a fashion professional and show up authentically :)

Cover Letter
To pursue your dream career in fashion, you will need a fashion-focused cover letter. A
cover letter is an essential part of your application and understanding how to create one
will help you secure your fashion internship even faster ! A fashion cover letter is a brief
introduction of your interest in an available position in the fashion industry (fashion
intern, fashion assistant, stylist, creative director, fashion designer etc.) and it needs to
showcase your personality and the unique skills you can bring into the role & company.
This part of the chapter will provide you with the best tips and step by step guide on how
to tailor your cover letter to the fashion industry and your specific position.

What to include in your cover letter ?

Your specific & unique set of skills based on the job role
Your work experience in the fashion industry
Your values in alignment with the company's mission
Your education background & achievements
Your plans of how you can contribute to the company

How to write a cover letter ?

1. Based on your internship research (from page 41) find the best candidate for your
cover letter, if you do not know a specific name you can address the team of the
company for example: “Dear Fashion Careers Platform Team, ….”
2. Include all essential information for the company or hiring manager to contact you
such your name, where you are based, professional website to your portfolio or social
media links and the date you are applying
3. Offer your background information, this can be anything from your education to work
experience or your fashion blog that you have been working on since you were 15
4. Highlight your experience and achievements, in the second paragraph you can share
your values, what you have learnt from your previous experience and how you can
apply the knowledge into your desired role & job position
5. In the final paragraph to showcase your anticipation for an interview, you can use
phrases such as “ I am looking forward to hearing from you soon !” or “I’m confident I
would be a great addition to your social media team !” to show your confidence :)
6. Finish off with a professional farewell such as Kind Regards or Sincerely & add your
details under your name (you can add your email, phone number, @ to your portfolio)

FASHION PROFESSIONALS:
HOW THEY STARTED &
THEIR ADVICE
Last but not least I would like to dedicate this chapter to fashion professionals, upcoming
fashion professionals & fashion graduates I admire and have gotten to know either via
working with them directly or through social media ! I invited them to contribute to this
guide with their fashion journey experience, share their knowledge, as well as show you
that sometimes the journey you begin can take you to a completely new and much more
suitable fashion career path for you. You do not always need to study fashion in order to
end up working in fashion. There is so much pressure to choose the perfect career path,
but the truth is that sometimes the perfect career path finds you when you decide to take
every opportunity to make it happen ! I have asked them 2 questions:

- What is your fashion career role, what did you study & what do you enjoy the most about your
profession?
- If you could tell something to yourself & give yourself advice at the beginning of your fashion
journey - what would it be ?

Make yourself a coffee or tea & I invite you to read these inspirational fashion journeys with me.

Uyi @uyiilenbs - Fashion Editor at WOTC Magazine
"I am a fashion editor at WOTC magazine & I studied BA Hons Fashion Promotion and
Communication @Southampton Solent University. There is much to love and appreciate
in my current career role. I have access to hundreds of inspirational women and their
brands creating limitless opportunities. Above all things having the ability and being
trusted to tell the phenomenal stories of these Individuals.”

& Uyi’s fashion career advice: “Be anxious for nothing, everything you learn and go through
will structure the path you will walk. Never limit or cage yourself too early, be formless and
allow the journey to mould you. Look for leadership that you trust and inspires you. Explore
all avenues of the industry never stop learning and make connections.”

Cabrini @cabriniroy - Fashion Designer at Cabrini Roy

What is your fashion career role: Fashion designer
What did you study: BA Womenswear at London College of Fashion
What do you enjoy the most about your profession?

“I would say getting to bring my creative sketches to life, I’m a very hands on person so I
just love being creative whether that’s pattern cutting, sewing or designing. I also love
seeing my designs on my clients & customers. There's something magical about seeing
your designs on real people.”

If you could tell something to yourself & give yourself advice at the beginning of your
fashion journey - what would it be ? "Something I would remind my younger self and every
emerging designer is that you need to keep that child-like faith in yourself, you’ve already got
your best quality and that’s just being YOU! There will be people with similar aesthetics and
ideas but trust me, no one else can execute your ideas like you can. The world is waiting to see
your designs, they’re looking for someone exactly like you to inspire them. The passion you
discovered as a child for fashion design will be the driving force behind your career, don’t give
up on investing in yourself and your dreams. There is so much room to grow in fashion, I’m
ever-evolving and you are too so chase those dreams you are keeping so close to your heart
because you never know what could happen!”

Eva @thereachplatform - Luxury & Brand Management Fashion Graduate

What is your favourite fashion experience you had so far and what did you enjoy the
most about your role?
“Over the last 4 years during my university degree, I’ve tried to dip my toes into every
element of the fashion industry by interning for a wide range of companies in a lot of
different roles (from social media to buying to styling, etc) to find what best works for me
and to try to grow my networking list ready for when I graduate. My favourite experience
has to be becoming the UK PR & Communication Assistant at Kering group brand,
Bottega Veneta during my placement year. The best element about my role was having
the opportunity to speak with high-profile publications and stylists every day so that I
could coordinate and be responsible for press requests for the London office - it’s great
to see a request you’ve worked on in print on the shelves!”

What did you study and what did you enjoy most about studying fashion at university?
“I have just finished my degree in Fashion Marketing with Management from the
University of Southampton where I studied at the Winchester School of Art campus. I
loved my degree so much, as not only did it allow me to take a placement year during
2nd to 3rd year but it was such a broad course. We covered modules including; Buying,
PR, Fashion’s most Critical Issues, Digital Marketing, Styling and more - so it allowed you
to understand where in the industry you wanted to work. I originally was looking at
studying a straight marketing degree, however being able to study the sector I wanted to
work in within a creative environment excited me even more.”

What is something you have learnt alongside your fashion journey that would help
someone who is just getting started?
I’d say two things I’ve learnt alongside my fashion journey has been;
1. “It’s okay to not know what part of the fashion industry you want to work in. It may feel like
a lot of pressure at times, however it’s fine to take your time and learn from lots of different
parts of the industry.”
2.“Be kind to everyone, and try to network as much as possible. You never know who is going
to help you open your next door within your fashion journey so always be open to getting to
know others and learn from them too.”

Xenia @xsbeautyofficial - MUA, Hair Stylist & Lash Technician
“I am a makeup artist and hair stylist, and now also a lash tech. I studied ‘Makeup and
Hair Design’ at Solent University in Southampton for 3 years. The degree was far more
than just learning to do makeup, you learn how to become a creative director,
photographer and overall a creative. What I love most about being an MUA is being able
to transform someone and give them confidence, its amazing when someone looks in the
mirror and smiles, its priceless. I do also love the part of meeting new people daily and
getting to know them.”

“The advice I would give myself at the beginning would definitely be to do more free work,
collaborative with everyone and anyone. I would say I was quite picky about these things but
now I realised you simply can't be. I have learnt it's not what you know but who you know so
definitely introducing yourself to everyone and getting yourself out there in anyway possible is
the key.”

Adina @adinamonette - Fashion Brand Owner at Adina Monette & Freelancer

“So, I am a fashion brand owner / professional freelancer! I studied fashion retail
management for my undergrad and creative enterprise for my postgrad and I think the
thing I enjoy most about owning my brand is that I get to work on something I love
wholeheartedly, and I get to use my creative side nearly everyday which is something I
wasn’t able to do whilst working in corporate. What I enjoy about freelancing is that I get
to meet new people with each role and I get to brush up on my skill set which adds to my
business.”

& Adina’s words to her younger self: “I would tell myself to take as many internships in
different roles whilst at university, because it’s only by doing a part of a role or being in that
department/ operation that you’ll know if you love or hate that particular thing! It helps to
quiet the noise of what if!”

Deni @denikirostyle - Personal & Fashion Stylist at Deni Kiro, www.denikiro.com
“My career is personal fashion styling & I work 1 to 1 with private clients both men and
women helping them create their own signature personal style ! I also do fashion styling
and I work with magazines and brands to create campaigns but that's probably 30% of
my work and majority is personal styling. I studied Interior design & Arts at the University
of Arts in London. Even though I took fashion classes in body & identity my major was Art
& Interior Design and I worked in Interior design for a couple years however my passion
was always fashion and that dominated. So even though I did not study specifically that, I
felt that many subjects were similar like colours, forms, portions, aesthetics and I studied
a bit of history in fashion so I started my own blog, where I shared fashion and I have
been styling my friends and family since I remember. After working for a couple years in
interior design I quitted and I decided to pursue my true passion which was fashion and I
became a freelance personal stylist. From working as a personal stylist I became head
stylist and creative director for a styling company which led me to starting my own
company. What I enjoy the most about my work is working with people - I love people & I
love fashion and I love the way how wearing certain clothes can affect you. Wearing the
right clothes can affect your body posture, can make you more confident and can really
advance your career. There is a quote from Donatella Versace which I love and it goes
something like “Clothes can’t perform miracles, but they have the power to enhance what
is inside" and I really believe it ! So I love this aspect of working in fashion, as well as
working with people !”

“If I was to give advice to my younger self, 10 years ago - I would say go for what you really
love, make sure you work on what you truly love and enjoy because if you are loving it means
that you will eventually be good at it and people will always read it ! I would also say love and
respect your clients like I treat my clients as my family. Listen to your clients, understand their
needs and always give a little bit more for what you're paid for - always leave your clients with
the sense of feeling that they got more out of the service. That would be the advice I'd give to
myself & probably to hire a personal development coach sooner than later and set clear goals
and work towards them - have a good balance of work and personal life.”
