 Jewellers Academy

Hi Anne. Selling online is a great option. You can start with social
media e.g. Instagram and ask people to DM you to buy. Etsy fees are not that high in
comparison with selling in shops (which would typically take a 50% mark up). The key is to
ensure that is covered in your pricing. I have a whole pricing masterclass on that which
will help https://www.jewellersacademy.com/pricing When selling online you do need to
drive traffic to your business, you can't rely on people stumbling on your page, even on
Etsy. So having social media and starting an email list is a great way to build a customer
base However, before you even get to that your first 100 sales will normally come from
your network. If you can reach out to people that you know, ask them to buy and to
recommend you.

 Jewellers Academy Hi Ciara. Great question! It does depend on whether you are selling
online, wholesaling to shops, selling at craft fairs etc. I have a whole pricing masterclass on
that which goes into lots of detail and gives you a spreadsheet you can use to calculate
your pricing so check it out https://www.jewellersacademy.com/pricing

 Jewellers Academy Hi Ciara. The key to social media is to be where your ideal customer
is. If they are on TikTok then you need to be on TikTok. With that said, you can often re-
use content that you use elsewhere. For example, for me Instagram is the best place to
find people interested in jewellery making so I focus on there. But we are able to use the
same content on TikTok and Youtube shorts to reach a different audience. If you have
limited time, pick one social media and go all in with it

I am a jewellery manufacturer. I can design anything and can craft anything
at most cost effective rates. Where and how to approach clients?

COMMENT

 Jewellers Academy Hi Gaurav. Your customers will be jewellery designers so you need to
be where they are. It's worth ensuring you have an up to date profile on LinkedIn as a lot
of business to business selling happens on there. And I would suggest focussing on
Instagram which is where a lot of your customers will be. Start to follow jewellers that
have a style that you can help them recreate in bulk. DM jewellers to say hi and what you
do and ask them to get in touch if they have any questions. If you're just setting up on
Instagram, make time to follow at least 10 possible contacts per day if you can. Like and
comment on their work before messaging them. I think a lot of jewellers are looking for
reliable manufacturers so you're in a great position!

How do you go about learning tax rules for the business, especially if it's
starting out as a "side hustle" to a job you already pay tax on?

Cara
COMMENT

 Jewellers Academy Hi Anne. If you're in the UK luckily it is pretty simple to set up. Most
jewellers start off as a sole trader. You don't need to register with HMRC until you have
made sales of £1000 in the tax year. Then you register as a sole trader and you need to
complete a tax return by 31st January for the previous tax year. This link gives more info
on the steps you need to take https://www.gov.uk/set-up-sole-trader

How do you generate leads for your jewellery business?

kry
COMMENT

 Anna Hi Kry. There are a few steps to this. The first one that many people miss out is
selling to your own network. Your first 100 sales will likely come from friends and family.
If you tell 10 people and they each tell 10 people that could be 110 sales. And there is
usually one person in your network who knows lots of people and are willing to champion
you. Share about what you're making on your personal Facebook page, tell people in
person, put it in your whatsapp bio etc. While you're doing that start on social media.
Choose the platform that you think your ideal customer will use. For most jewellers right
now it's Instagram. Share one video reel per week (and more if you can). Start to build up
an email list using a mail client e.g. Mailchimp. Email them at least once a month, even if
there's only 10 people on the list! It takes time to build momentum but the time will pass
anyway

create separate mailing lists for different launches

What makes a metal department store worthy? E.g why are stainless steel
brands not found in department stores?

kry
COMMENT
 Anna Hi Kry. It does depends on the store. Jewellery made from precious metals can
command a higher price and come with prestige so it's often the choice for department
stores as there is the opportunity for a bigger profit margin. But it's not always the
case in department stores. I know that Lola Rose, a gemstone beaded company sold in
department stores in the UK. Now re-branded as Nikki and

 Anna If you are asking about costs for sending pieces to customers then in your
selling policy you set out that the customer needs to pay any duty/customs fees levied
