Dear Parents,

Welcome to Applewood British School and thank you for the opportunity to facilitate your children’s learning. We all
look forward to a fun-filled time at school and we look forward to your support in every way possible.

Attached with this letter is our planner for the term, to help you keep up with events in school. Here are a few other
details to note:

Curriculum
We use the British National Curriculum at both Early Years and Primary levels. Although challenging and rigorous,
learning is very practical, enquiry-based and relevant to children’s developmental stages which ensures that children
love to learn and will continue to do so even when there is no adult around. You will shortly receive an overview of what
your children will be learning in this term.

Homework
Children only take work to be done at home from the Nursery Class (3 to 4 years).

 Nursery: a piece of work only on Tuesdays and Thursdays

 Reception (4 to 5): a piece of work on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday

 Primary: Maths and English daily and/or a piece from any other subject

Calendar
You will receive a calendar of school events every term to help you plan to attend. Please contact the school
administrator if you do not receive one before or in the first week of resumption.

Books and Reading

Children are issued different types of books. Parents are expected to replace lost or torn books, at a cost. Also, you
child should bring home a storybook to read every Friday, to be returned to school on Monday. Please make time to read
to or with your child. Reading books damaged or lost will be charged to the next term fees.

Clubs
Each child from Nursery Class is expected to be registered for at least two clubs each term. There are ten (10)
sessions of clubs each term; the schedule is below:

Uniforms
Children in Early Years are expected to wear school uniforms only on Mondays and Fridays and on ceremonial days.
However, children in the primary are expected to wear uniforms daily; P. E. is on Wednesdays. The boys wear white
shirts on Mondays and Tuesdays, and blue shirts on Thursdays and Fridays. Only navy blue sweaters (not hoodies or
jackets) and black shoes with white socks are allowed in the primary.

Children may not wear necklaces or bracelets to school as the school will not take responsibility for loss.

School Trips
Once a term, we try to take children, from 3 and above, on school trips outside the school. This will usually be at a
charge and you will be informed ahead of time, You will need to sign a consent form for your child to be taken out of
school. Trips are not compulsory.

Feeding
Please attempt to feed children before they arrive at school in the morning; breakfast is very important for
concentration and mental development of children. If children arrive too early or have not had breakfast from home,
please inform the teacher so they can be fed lightly before school starts.

Although lunch is served for a fee in school, parents may choose to pack lunch for their children, from home. All
children must bring food/snacks/fruits for morning break.

Swimming
As part of Physical Development, children will be swimming once monthly, if the weather permits. You will be notified
ahead so you can pack a swimming bag for your child to include swimming gears, towels, slippers and caps (for girls),
Please let us know if you do not wish for your child to swim in school. All children’s items should be boldly labelled.

Feedback
You will be receiving feedback on your children’s learning in many ways; this will ensure that you can support learning
from home.
 A daily Report booklet is sent home every day in the Early Years to give you an idea of how your child’s day
went. Children in the primary have Home-School Journals and entries are made on needs basis. Homework is
entered therein.
 In the Early Years, Attainment Records are sent home in Terms 1 and 2. Primary children have a report at the
end of every term.

Birthdays
Children may celebrate birthdays in school, only with pastries and drinks; no cooked food is allowed. If gifts are shared,
every child in that class must get one. Kindly remember that children are expected to donate books to their class
libraries on their birthdays. This is a way to make a wider variety of books available to children in school.

Hair Extensions and Adornments

We would like girls to wear their own hair as much as possible. This allows them to take pride in themselves and develop
confidence in their own looks. If there is a need for extensions, it must blend in with the child’s hair and of reasonable
length. For health and safety reasons, children in Early Years are not allowed to wear hair beads.

Fees
All term fees are due on the first day of resumption. Children with unpaid fees are not allowed into school from second
week of resumption. All payments are made directly into the school account.

Communication
We recognise that communication is key in relationships such as ours with you. You will receive correspondences from
the school as often as possible via e-mails (and phone calls when urgent); please respond as often as you can.
Additionally, you can keep up with us on all our social media platforms.

Please feel free to come into school at any time of the day to see what the children are doing or simply lend a hand in a
class. You may also call the school on 09030152004 or email applewoodbritishschool@gmail.com

Again, thank you for the opportunity to offer your children the best learning experience.

Do have a wonderful week ahead.
