through

Strophic Form – Verses and choruses. Verses have the same music, choruses
have the same music – but different from the verse.

Round or Canon – the verses are started at different points by groups of

singers to create a layered texture.

Call and response – one person calls, the chorus (choir) respond with the same
phrase each time.

Rhythmic devices
Ostinato – a repeated rhythmic pattern
Polyrhythm – two or more rhythms at the same time
Cross rhythm – when rhythms of different metres are played at the
same time eg 3 vs 4
Syncopation – Rhythms that are off the beat.
Finger Numbers for good keyboard technique.

Hooks and Riffs
Types of Hook
1. Structural Hook – a part of the structure that acts as a hook. The most
commonly used structural hook is the chorus.
2. Instrumental hook – used as an ostinato (repeated melodic or rhythmic
phrase) or as a riff at the beginning or end of a section or line.
3. Storyline hook – the story of the song is more powerful than the music,
beat or structure.
4. Production hooks – these are studio techniques used by the production
team.
