Lesson 2:
The Internet and
the World Wide Web
COMPUTER FUNDAMENTALS AND PROGRAMMING 1
COMP111L
Learning Outcomes
• Identify computer networks and its function.
• Enhanced ability to determine networks and
the world wide web and its function.
Significance
of Internet ?
What is INTERNET?
• Internet is a global wide area network that
connects computer systems across the world.
It includes several high-bandwidth data lines
that comprise the Internet "backbone."

BANDWIDTH
• Bandwidth describes the maximum data transfer
rate of a network or Internet connection. It
measures how much data can be sent over a
specific connection in a given amount of time.
• For example, a gigabit Ethernet connection has a
bandwidth of 1,000 Mbps
Year Bandwidth
1969 9.6 Kbps
1985 54 Kbps
1987 1.544 Mbps (T1 speed)

1989 45 Mbps (T3 speed) Growth in
1995 155 Mbps Network
1997 622 Mbps Bandwidth
1998 1,024 Mbps
2000 2,048 Mbps

Access Providers
• An access provider is a business that provides
individuals and organizations access to the Internet
free or for a fee. For example, some Wi-Fi networks
provide free access while others charge a per use fee.

Internet Addresses
• An IP address, short for Internet Protocol address, is a
number that uniquely identifies each computer or
device connected to the Internet.
• In general, the first portion of each IP address identifies
the network and the last portion identifies the specific
computer.
• A domain name is the text version of an IP address.

Web Addresses
• A Web page has a unique address, which is called a
URL(Uniform Resource Locator) or Web address.
• A Web address consists of a protocol, domain name,
and sometimes the path to a specific Web page or
location on a Web page.
