Overview

Principles of length and diameter

measurement

Length and diameter data is transferred from the

harvester head module (HHM) to the central processing
unit (CPU) over the digital CAN network.

Length measurement

The length of the stem is measured by an encoder which

is attached to an independent measuring wheel on the
harvester head.

The resolution of the length measurement is 1 centimeter.

–UN–28AUG06
Diameter measurement

The drive arms are fitted with a diameter sensor

T217867
consisting of a potentiometer. It senses the angle of the
arms and a stem diameter is calculated according to the

Processing
General

In order for the computer to register stems properly there

are a few conditions that must be met for each stem:

1. Stem selection (harvester head close)

2. Reference cut (felling cut)
3. Species selection
4. Length selection (feeding and crosscuts)
5. Reset (harvester head open)

If there are problems during processing you must follow a

special procedure to make sure that the logs are
registered correctly. See section 042, Processing (Top
break or dropped stem)(Problems with measurement).

Processing the stem

1. Starting a stem
The harvester head and measurements are reset for
the next stem by pressing the head open [DT open]
button. Each stem is started by grabbing the stem [DT
Close] and making a felling cut or similar. This means
that where a stem is picked up from the ground you
must make a reference cut, similar to a felling cut, at
the root. A reference cut is used to indicate the zero
point for the length measurement. Feed forward can
not be started until the saw has returned to the home
position.
2. Selecting tree species
Select tree species by one of the species button: [Spec
1/Spec 2/Spec 3/ Spec 4] or species 5...8 by pressing
[Special tree]+[Spec 1/Spec 2/Spec 3/ Spec 4]. The
species can be selected before or after the felling cut.
In auto mode 3 this will also act as permission to start
feeding. However, the species must be entered before

–UN–28AUG06
the felling cut if you are using the stump treatment
settings by species.
3. Selecting log length
Length can be selected in two ways in the system:
• manual length selection (preselection)

T217874
• optimized length.

Manual length selection uses the length buttons [Key

1]...[Key 9], [Key 0] or the forced assortment buttons
which have been specifically programmed.

4. Selecting grade (optimization)

If a price matrix is used, the length selection can be
based on the optimization. Grade limits are determined
using the grade buttons. The system makes a bucking
proposal based on the optimum shape of the stem. If
the bucking has to be done differently, because of
defects in the stem, the length buttons or the forced
assortment buttons can be used. You can also use the
(+/-) length selection. You always have the last word in
deciding the length. Pressing the species button
restarts optimization after temporary use of manual
bucking.

5. Crosscut and registration

In order for anything to be registered you must make at
least one crosscut before finishing the stem. In order
for a cut to be approved the saw bar must pass the
home position sensor. This is shown on the display by
the saw bar out symbol (A).
6. Finishing the stem
Each stem is finished normally when you “reset”, i.e.
briefly press the head open [DT open] button on the
right boom control lever. When you do this the
harvester head opens up and tilts up normally ready
for the next stem. You will see the stem count increase
by one stem on the display after reset.

Processing example

• See the instruction manual for the base machine to

switch on the boom, the functions of the harvester head
and the working rpm.
• Press the head open [DT open] button. The harvester
head will open and normally tilt up. For further
information see menu 7 - 4 (Automatic level). Use the
boom to align the centre line of the harvester head
precisely next to the butt end of the stem to be felled
and press the head close [DT close] button. Push the
stem lightly towards the direction in which the tree is to
fall (removing slack) e.g. by moving the boom extension
or parallel joint slightly outwards. Some of the weight of
large stems can be reduced by lifting upwards.
• For felling cuts use auto mode 3 only if the tree can be
sawn through in one cut. If you have to make a
directional cut for a thick stem, select to control the saw
manually. For further information see this section (Saw
control). Float mode of the harvester head tilt is
switched on automatically when the saw bar has
returned to the home position. A nudge effect of the tilt
can be obtained by pressing the [Tilt down] (1) button.
Once the saw has cut through the stem, lift the
harvester head up from the stump. You can start
feeding at the same time so that the weight of the stem
helps to start it moving as it falls. Stem processing may
be carried out as follows, for example (see figure):

Top break or dropped stem

If the stem breaks during felling, or if you accidentally

drop the stem and have to process it in two stages, then
you should press the [Dont count] button before opening
the head after the first part of the stem.

In this situation the system does not reset (the harvester

head remains floating) and the registration combines the
first and second halves of the stem when the second half
is finished.

Only press the [Dont count] button (1) if you have made at
least one crosscut before picking up the second half.

If you drop the stem before you have made the first
crosscut, simply reset using the head open button and
start the stem from the beginning.

The feeding and saw remain in the manual mode after a

felling cut until the length of the first log is selected.

Manual mode is also on if, in the settings, you have

chosen to control the saw completely manually and for the
feeding to be almost completely manually guided, auto

of the saw and the feeding using the buttons on the
control keypads.

The log cannot be cut into normal lengths before you

have selected the species. Instead sawing is possible only
for feed lengths below 40 cm and feeding can be
controlled only manually using the feed buttons.

the [Main Saw] button while cutting is carried out, or so
that the cutting is carried out completely automatically
without having to do anything at all. There are also some
options in between.

For felling cuts of large as well as very thin stems it is

recommended that you use a mode which needs you to
press the [Main Saw] button during the entire cut.

• Manual saw control (level 0)

As long as you hold down the [Main Saw] button the
harvester head will keep sawing. The saw will return
when the button is released.
The automatic feature is completely switched off.
Position sensor pulses of the saw bar are not used at
this level.
• Saw auto mode 1
The [Main Saw] button must be pressed during the
entire cut. When the saw has cut through the entire
stem, it will stop automatically and return to the home
position.
The function is the same in both felling and processing
modes.
• Saw auto modes 2 and 3

CAUTION: In Saw auto modes 2 and 3, cutting

can be operated completely automatically.
Because of this, you should always use these
auto modes with care. You should use manual
control (level 0) or the saw auto mode 1 until
you are completely familiar with the functioning
of the system.

Saw auto modes 2 and 3 are shown with their

parameters in conjunction with the harvester head
settings. See the menu 7-4, Automatic level ((Saw

• Reset prognosis
Bucking is based on measured diameters for the part of
the stem which has already been fed. The system will
make a prognosis on how quickly the remaining part of
the stem will narrow. Based on this it can create a
bucking prognosis for the whole stem.
In order to provide as precise a prognosis as possible,
the system will study the shape of the stems within the
site being worked. This learning process progresses
every time a stem is fed through the harvester head.
After resetting, the system starts to collect new
prognosis parameters from the beginning. This
command can be used when moving from one area to
another where the stem shape will change significantly.
This means that old data will not give incorrect
prognoses and slow down optimization.

normal grade button. It can be used to define the grade
and the grade limits of the stem during optimization.
Menu 2-3 contains settings which affect how the buttons
work in normal grade determination during optimization.

Normally when a grade button is pressed it means
defining the grade or a grade limit for the stem. When
the operator defines a grade for the stem by a grade
button, optimization will suggest the length-assortment
combination for the next log which is the most valuable
in accordance with the bucking file.

Forced assortment

If required, any of the grade buttons can be programmed

such that by pressing it the operator is able to determine
the assortment and length of the log directly. The log is
cut and registered in the assortment desired by the
operator.

The selected assortment operated by this button must

have at least the grade corresponding to the grade
button’s number as a permitted grade defined in the
bucking instructions.

The length selected from the pull-down menu will be

suggested first as the length of the log to be cut. The
pull-down menu contains all the lengths defined for the
assortments from the bucking file for the active site. Other
lengths for the assortment can be selected using the +
[Inc] and - [Dec] buttons.

The machine can only carry out forced assortment

requests and length selection if the measurements of the
log meet the conditions for that assortment set in the
bucking file. If “Repeat length” is selected, the machine
attempts to use the same assortment and length for as
long as possible.

E.g.

made under the [Pulp] button and those for rotten

The default value for “Minimum time” is 30 seconds.
– First start reminder
If you should forget to start a new shift, the system
will remind you itself after this time has elapsed. This
means that the ‘Shift change’ menu will appear
automatically on the display.
Trees produced before the shift start will not be
registered in the work and repair follow-up.
The default value for “First start reminder” is 5

The default value for “Start reminder interval” is 10
minutes.
– Stop reminder interval
When the stop menu appears on the display, you
have the option of waiting to document the stop until
you have completed what you are doing. This allows
you to operate the machine during the stop.
However, in order to ensure that you do not forget to
register the stop, the system will remind you at
regular intervals.
The default value for “Stop reminder interval” is 20

Measurement / Calibration (menu 6)
General

Length and diameter measurement must be correctly

calibrated in order to timber processing succeed. Do the
checks regularly, e.g. once a week and calibrate when
needed. Check first length measurement and then
diameter measurement.

Notice that the tree species 1...4 has their own calibration
settings and the tree species 5...8 uses same settings
than the tree species 4. It is not recommendable to use
species 5...8 for calibration or control measurement.

Check before calibration that the following settings are

correct:

• Basic settings of the diameter sensors (menu 9-5)

• Grabbing settings for the delimbing knives and feed
rollers (menu 7-2, menu 7-3)

In addition check the condition of the delimbing knives

and sharpen them if needed.

Choose good quality stems for control measurement.

There should not be any bad bends, branches or ovality in
the stem. Good diameter in breast height is for example
about 300 mm. Start measuring and calibration from a
stem whith small branches.

Use an approved measuring tape and a calliper with

millimeter graduations. Be careful with the manual
measurement

Check that the measuring tape is in straight line during

length measuring.

The calliper should be in right-angle to the longitudial axis

of the stem. Regular measurement checks are to be
carried out using an electronic calliper as follows:

1. Carry out a checking batch of a few logs. Transfer then

the measurement data from the harvester to the
calliper.
2. Make then a comparative measurement using the
calliper and transfer this data back to the harvester’s
database (menu 6-1).
3. The result is evaluated in menu 6-1 and automatic
calibration can be carried out on the basis of this
where necessary.

You can also feed data to the control measurement

database manually by “displayed-measured” system in
“Manual data window (menu 6-1).

Measurement / Calibration (menu 6)

Basic calibration has been made for the new machine on

the factory. Anyway it is reasonable to do the control
measurement right a way in the conditions of the first site.

When necessary, basic calibration is carried out when

replacing harvester head components or after repair work.
Length calibration is done by measured – displayed –
system in menu 6-1 ”Manual data” window. For the basic
calibration of the diameter can be used in menu 6-3:

• Old calibration file ”Load calibration values (*.mac)”

measuring points, “Base curve” – “Create new curve”

PY10832,61 –22–01SEP06–2/2

Length measurement

Length measurement in the system is based on the length

sensor reporting two pulse trains. These are then
processed by the system using a value which converts the
pulses to a length value in centimeters.

Length calibration changes this value, meaning that the

next time the system converts the successive pulses, it
will interpret these as a different length. Length calibration
can be done by each tree species. In addition it can be
done also for the butt log.

The length calibration affects directly to the result of the

–UN–28AUG06
volume calculation. Calibrating is done in menu 6-1 with
“Displayed-measured” method.

081-2 120406
PN=79
Measurement / Calibration (menu 6)

Diameter measurement

The diameter measurement on the system is based on

the diameter sensors reporting two electrical voltages. The
system then processes these using a number of
adjustable values which convert the voltage to a diameter
in millimeters. The system has 22 different calibration
points which are distributed across all diameters. The
“Base curve” is formed on the basis of these calibrating
points (menu 6-3).

When calibrating a diameter, one or more of the

calibration points will be changed. This means that the
next time the system converts a voltage which comes

–UN–28AUG06
within the amended area, to another diameter.

If the volumes measured by the machine for a diameter

area are too large, the graph must be lowered, in other

T215862
words the diameters for the calibration points in the area
in question must be reduced. The calibration results in a
graph should always be quite line rising evenly.

Changing diameter calibration points in menu 6-1 will

affect volume calculation directly. Automatic calibration
which is carried out on the basis of measuring database
changes directly the values of the “Base curve”.

Calibration need should be kept under 5 millimeter at one

time by diameter control measurement. Bigger correction
at one time might distort the shape of the diameter curve
and make the calibration more difficult.

Diameter shown in the run mode:

• Actual measurement result from sensors which are

connected to the delimbing knives as grabbing the tree.
• Calculated reading from the saw line as the felling cut is
done.
• Actual measuring result from the saw line when the
stem is fed forward over the distance between the a

Table of the database

The data, which is collected to the database, is displayed

by tree species in a table in menu 6-1. Number of the
latest measured logs (“New”) entered to the database is
displayed as green and the number of older logs (“Prior”)
measured is displayed as blue.

TimberRite 30H system evaluates the measuring results

and suggests a length and/or diameter calibration if
needed. This is displayed as marks on the ”Calibration
suggestion” columns. At the same time, the ”Begin
calibration” button will be activated. By pressing this
button, you can move to the wizard where you can do the
calibration.

The system displays on the wizard a calculated

suggestion for the calibration. You can accept or skip the
suggestion or change the values. You can also add your
own selections in the ”Calibration suggestion” column,
when also, that appears in the wizard and they can be
calibrated.

All data that has been used to the calibration will be

removed from the database. When both diameter and
length calibration has been done the numbers of the
stems counted by tree species will be reset.

In menu 6-3, you can delete if needed the old data before
feeding new measuring data. Single measuring
information cannot be deleted but the system removes
automatically unclear measuring data from the database
when the difference between displayed and measured
data is too big. Difference of the diameter measurement
data can be at the maximum 20mm and difference of the
length measurement data can be at the maximum 30cm.

Manual feeding of the measurement data

You can collect manually the measuring data as follows

by measuring the length of the stems and top diameters
with help of a calibration print. Before calibration, sufficient
measurement results must be collected for the graph in
order to get reliable results. Carry out in every work shift
the control measurement for example to five middle sized
stems, which you can use as a base for the calibration
every work.

The system creates similar KTR file from the manual

calibration data as it does with electrical caliper collected
data.

1. When you have finished handling the stem or stems

which were selected for the control measurement take
number of required stems on the “Manual calibration
list”. See menu 3, Print (section 113)
2. Measure the length (rounding down to the nearest
whole cm) and make a note of the measurement
against the corresponding length in the “Manual
calibration list” against “Length / Measured”.
3. Measure the top diameter of a log crosswise on the
bark. Also check that there is no smaller diameter, in
the form of a waist or similar feature, closer to the
butt-end of the log. In that case, this would mean that
the narrowest diameter would be recorded, since the
system only measures decreasing diameters. Note
down the measured diameters for each log at the
corresponding diameter on the “Manual calibration list”
under “Manual 1” and “Manual 2”. Calculate the
average diameter and enter this under “Average”.
4. Open Manual data window and enter the number of
the logs and click ”Get stem data” button. Copy the
measured values from a print and click ”Save” button.

On the table butt logs whose diameter is larger than in the

menu 6-3 defined minimum diameter for butt log length
correction are marked with a star. The system calculates
them their own calibration suggestion which can be
accepted separately in the calibration wizard.

Start from a smallest diameter. Change the curve
maximum 5 - 10 mm at one calibration point and carry out

that should be fixed changes at the same time if needed.
For that reason you should make corrections only about
100 mm diameter intervals at one time. Enter the values
and click the ”Calibrate section” button.

Under ”Create new curve” button can be created a new
diameter curve based on at least three measuring points.
You can use points of the database to create a new

Harvester head settings
General

The parameters are individual to each machine and

harvester head, so that one machine may not function as
well at some parameters as another would. However, the
differences between machines are extremely marginal, so
that the parameters from one machine should be able to
function well on another with only a few very minor
adjustments.

Settings and auto modes can also be saved by operator

according to their preferences. As you get used to the
machine it is worth adjusting these settings so that the
machine can be operated using as few buttons as
possible because that can increase productivity and job
satisfaction.

The harvester head settings in menus 7 and 8 can be

saved as a MAS file.

The basic unit for parameter values based on time is 0,01

seconds.

Each parameter has so called default value. These default

values comes with the system and they have been tested
so that every harvester head will work satisfactorily.
However keep in mind that working conditions may
require fine tuning for some parameters for better results.

are easy to delimb to go past the cut window. On the
other hand, if the braking is too soft, the feeding speed
can decrease too much before reaching the cut window.
This hampers the delimbing of thick branched stems,
the feeding may stop before the cut window is reached.

–UN–28AUG06
The feeding is normally stopped automatically at the
front edge of the cut window in the direction of feed.
The cut window is specified in the bucking file using the
administrative program.

T217882
• Acceleration
During acceleration the feeding control current
increases until the maximum current is achieved. This
determines how quickly the control current increases in
relation to the acceleration distance. Increasing this
value results in reaching the maximum current faster.
• Max current
This parameter value determines the maximum control
current of the feed valve spool on the forward /
backward feed and is directly proportional to the feeding
speed.
Normally, the maximum current is set at its default
value, in which case the feeding control valve should be
able to open fully.
If the parameter is set at a value that is too low, the
feed will not be able to manage the biggest trees. If the
feeding speed is restricted by means of this parameter,
the valve will restrict the flow of oil. In hot conditions,
this may lead to overheating of the hydraulic oil.
• Approach current
The “Approach current” value is used in the final stage
of feeding to compensate for the feeding speed of
different sized stems before the cut window.

Feeding (menu 7)

In order to make feeding start-up easier after a

crosscut, you can activate automatic pre-delimbing. See
section 034, Control keypads, functions in run mode.
This parameter sets the pre-delimbing length. In the
case of forest with a normal density of branches, it is
recommended that the value be within the range of
20...40 cm. With a high density of branches the value
can be 40...80 cm.
• Constant pressure after feeding
After feeding, or sawing, the constant pressure of the
hydraulics will be kept for the time set for this
parameter. After the constant pressure time has
expired, when you operate the boom, the hydraulic
system of the machine will be load-sensing.
If the value is over 250 there is continuous constant
pressure in the system.
• Automatic tilt lock
”Automatic tilt lock” option locks the tilt during feeding,
when the stem diameter is under 160 mm. Then tilt can
be released to floating by pressing “tilt down” button.
This function is off as a default and tilt is floating during
the feeding.
• Stop feeding by head close button
You can choose which one of the two possible functions
activates when you press the head close button; high
pressure to feed rollers or stop feeding in head close
button while feeding.

Branch rammer

When the "Slip guard time while feeding" informs about

the stem has got stuck, the branch rammer function of the
feeding reverses and tries to move forward again, past the
point it got stuck at. The branch rammer automatically
makes three attempts at the most to get past this point. If
the third attempt fails, the feeding stops to indicate that it
is stuck. After that, the feeding must be driven manually
past that point.

The function alternatives of the branch rammer contain

operating in both feeding directions, only while forward
feeding, or not operating at all. When the branch rammer
is not active, the automatic control switches to manual as
soon as the feeding gets stuck.

• Slip guard time while feeding

The sensitivity of the branch rammer is set by means of
this parameter so, that the harvester head cannot
damage the stem by grinding it, when the feeding gets
stuck for example at a dense bundle of branches or at a
bend on the stem.
This parameter will determine how long the feed rollers
may continue to rotate without the system recording any
pulses from the length measurement sensor.
When the waiting time has finished, the run mode
display shows a symbol (1) and depending on the
previously described settings, the Branch rammer is
engaged or the feeding stops.

CAUTION: Do not feed the stem towards

yourself or others.

NOTE: In auto modes 2 and 3 the feed continues

automatically to the cut window after start
permission.

NOTE: You can stop automatic feeding by pressing the

[Stop] button or one of the feed buttons.

The feeding control levels 1...3 are described in section

043 (Feed control).
• Saw

Saw control includes four options which are a manual

level (0) and three auto modes (1...3).

There can be used automatic cuts in crosscuts in modes

2 and 3. See menu 8-4, Automatic cuts (Section 093).

Before automatic saw control can be used, the harvester

head must be equipped with two sensors which sense the
position of the saw bar. They have to be adjusted properly
before using the saw control auto modes. See menu 8-1,
Saw (section 093).

Manual saw control mode 0

As long as you hold down the [Main Saw] button, the

harvester head will keep sawing. The saw will return when
the button is released.

The automatics are completely switched off. Position

sensor pulses of the saw bar are not used in this level.

The manual mode (0) of saw control uses a factory set

lower control current of constant pressure.

Saw auto mode 1

You have to keep the [Main Saw] button pressed during

the entire cut. When the saw bar has cut through the
stem, it will return automatically to its home position.

The function is the same in both felling cut and processing

mode.

Saw auto mode 2

• Felling cut
You have to keep the [Main Saw] button pressed during
the entire felling cut. When the saw bar has cut through
the entire stem, it will automatically turn and return to its
home position.
• Cross cut
When the feed has stopped in a cut window, you give
permission to saw by pressing the [Main Saw] button
briefly. When the saw bar has cut through the stem, it
turns back and returns to its home position. If you wish
to interrupt the cut, press the [Main Saw] button again.
The saw will then switch to manual control for the
duration of the cut.
The operator can activate automatic cuts for selected
assortments in menu 8-4. Sawing will then happen
automatically after set delay when feeding has stopped
in a cut window. If the selected assortment has
automatic cuts activated, the word “Auto” will appear
next to the saw symbol during feeding on run mode
window. The automatic cuts can be cancelled prior to
sawing by pressing the saw button briefly. Automatic
mode can be reverted by pressing the species button
for instance. See menu 8-4, Automatic cuts (section
093).

Saw auto mode 3

• Felling cut
Give permission for sawing by pressing the [Main Saw]
button briefly. The saw will then cut through the stem on
its own. When the saw bar has cut through the entire
stem, it will turn automatically and return to its home
position.
If you want to interrupt the cut, you should press the
[Main Saw] button once more.

• Tilt down while feeding

Tilt down while feeding generates a better delimbing
result and grip for the feed rollers. It is switched on 1,5
metres from the start of the feeding, when the stem’s
diameter is 160 mm or greater. Tilt down can be
activated for each species. It can be switched off for the
rest of the stem by pressing the force open delimbing

for the next stem.
• FR pressing max. current
Here you can limit the maximum grabbing pressure of
the feed rollers where necessary.
• Pressure distance

–UN–28AUG06
NOTE: Avoid using too long a high pressure distance, as
this will cause unnecessary wear to the feed
rollers.

T217883
At the start of feeding, the feed rollers require additional
pressure against the stem in order not to slip at start-up.
This parameter sets the distance for how long the feed
rollers are to apply high grabbing pressure on the stem.

The diameter values are denoted by two hairlines in the

graph. These hairlines can be manipulated by moving
them horizontally (left or right). The difference between
the hairlines specifies the DK high pressure range. The
range is to be denoted by a different background color
to that of the other graph (shadowed). The high
pressure pulse range can be set separately for each
tree species.
• Max pressure
This determines the maximum possible pressure for
delimbing knives; the real feeding time pressure will
always be limited to this value at maximum. On the
graph this maximum pressure will be illustrated by a
dashed line. If the delimbing knives pressure curve
during feeding setting exceeds this limit the real
pressure value will be limited to maximum pressure.
Maximum pressure, which is used with high pressure
pulses and with head close button is adjusted with “DK
pressure maximum current” setting values. Generally
maximum pressure is not used during feeding. Not even
with thickest stems.
• Lower DK pressure in relation to upper DK pressure
Using this parameter, you have the option of setting the
lower knife pressure to be higher or lower than the knife
pressure of the upper delimbing knives. The value is set
in terms of % of the actual value of the upper delimbing
knives.
• Upper DK max. pressure
• Lower DK max. pressure
Where required you can limit the maximum pressure of
the upper and lower delimbing knives separately.
• DK high pressure interval
This parameter indicates the interval length between
pressure pulses. If the time for this parameter is set too
short, feeding will be difficult.
• DK high pressure pulse length
This parameter indicates how long each pressure pulse
should last. If you wish to disconnect pressure pulsing,
you must set the value of this parameter to zero.
• DK min. pressure current
DK min. pressure current is shown on the graph lowest
pressure point on the right on the harvester heads
which have mechanical minimum pressure valve. Before
setting the minimum pressure you must find the
parameter value which corresponds to the mechanical
minimum pressure of the proportional valve. See menu
7-3, Delimbing knives (section 092).
Harvester heads which do not have a mechanical
minimum adjustment valve (E.g. H270 and H480),
minimum pressure is adjusted directly by this parameter
value for the upper delimbing knives. Subsequently the
grip of the lower delimbing knives is adjusted where
required using the parameter “Lower DK pressure in

Opening pulses

Delimbing knives

NOTE: If the opening time is too long, there is a risk of

the stem breaking loose from the harvester head’s
grip.

The opening pulse is used to reduce the pressure of the

delimbing knives to make it easier for the stem to start
moving when starting feeding. An opening time and
distance are set for the opening pulses.

• Opening time fwd

–UN–14SEP06
The delimbing knives are opened for the time set here
when forward feeding starts. They will remain in the
position reached in the time set until the end of the
opening pulse. After the opening pulse they will return

T217900
to normal pressure.
• Opening time bwd
This is the same as opening time forward but operates
when backward feeding starts.
This also compensates for the increase in diameter
which is unavoidable when reversing on a normal stem.
The same time is used for pulse opening the delimbing
knives continuously during reversing. The interval of
pulse opening is determined by the “Pulse period feed
backwards” parameter.
• Opening distance
This parameter defines the length of the opening pulse,
i.e. the distance for which the pressure of the delimbing
knives has been reduced. This is used in conjunction
with opening pulses in both forward and backward
feeding.
If the opening distance is very short, it can reduce the
opening time that has been preset to a longer time.
• Opening pulses
Min time between pulses
This parameter defines the shortest time between the
pulse openings when changing the direction of feeding.
E.g.
When the stem gets stuck, the feeding reverses and
aims forward again. If you have a long time (e.g. 60)
between the pulse openings, the stem will not slip out of
the harvester head. However, with a short time (e.g. 2)
the stem may slip out of the harvester head.
• Pulse period feed backwards
Pulse openings for the delimbing knives compensate for
the increasing diameter at reverse feed. This parameter
sets the time between the pulse openings and works
with the parameter “Opening time bwd”.

Example: Testing and adjusting of the grabbing pressure

of delimbing knives or feed rollers in the test mode without
mechanical valve adjustment. The correct pressure values
can be found in the harvester head manual.

1. Maximum grabbing pressure

a. Grabbing maximum current: 900.
b. Start test. The test is activated by selecting an
adjustment point. Move all points above 600mA..
c. Use a pressure gauge to measure the pressure at
the lowest grabbing measuring point. Stop test.
d. If the pressure reading was not correct, adjust the
lowest point.
e. When the pressure is correct, copy the current
value of the lowest point to the grabbing maximum
current value.

2. Minimum grabbing pressure

a. Diameter for settings testing: 90 mm (lowest point).
Set current at about 150 mA.
When testing the delimbing knives, set the pressure
ratio of the knives at 100 or the default value of the
head.
b. Use a pressure gauge to measure the pressure at
the grabbing measuring point.
c. If the pressure reading was not correct, adjust the
lowest point.
Delimbing knives:
Start by measuring the pressure of the upper knives
and adjust it to the correct value by adjusting the
lowest point of the graph.. Next, measure the
pressure of the lower knives and adjust it by means
of the pressure ratio of the knives (“Lower DK
pressure in relation to upper DK pressure”).

When you get practical settings you can save the changes

Feeding (menu 7)

NOTE: The settings must be checked and adjusted in the

test mode to ensure that the harvester head
functions cannot move once it’s closed!

This must only be done for harvester heads with

mechanically adjustable minimum pressure valves.
Before setting the minimum pressure you must find the
parameter value which corresponds to the mechanical
minimum pressure of the proportional valve. This
means if you set the parameter higher than this the
pressure will increase but setting the value lower will
not decrease the pressure.
The following instructions for finding the break point
can be used for both the feed rollers and delimbing
knives.
a. Connect a 25 MPa manometer to the measuring
point (Grabbing pressure of feed rollers or Grabbing
pressure of upper / lower delimbing knives) on the
harvester head.
b. The test is activated in test mode by selecting an
adjustment point.
c. Set the diameter of the lowest point of the graph for
the settings test to 90 mm to ensure that the
pressure increase steps do not have an effect.
Set the lowest point at a low current (such as 20),
and when delimbing knives are tested, the pressure
ratio of the knives at 100 or default to make sure
that they do not affect the pressure.
d. Check the pressure reading on the pressure gauge.
Write down the reading on a piece of paper. This
reading is the mechanically set minimum pressure.
Stop test.
e. Set current of the lowest point at a higher reading,
such as 300.
f. Check the pressure reading on the pressure gauge.
This must be higher than the pressure measured
earlier at stage C. The proportional valve spool is
now slightly closed.
g. Lower the current of the lowest point gradually.
Check the manometer pressure of each parameter
value as above.
h. When there is only a small reaction on the
manometer, you will have found the break point.

i. Check whether the manometer reading is equal to

the minimum mechanical pressure which you
measured at point C. If the manometer reading is
greater than this, you should repeat points F...H,
otherwise continue with point 2.

2. Setting the values

Lower the “FR pressing min. current” value 10 % from
the break point. Then set the “FR pressure increase”
parameter to a value where the stem stays firmly in the
harvester head at all diameters without the feed
becoming difficult.
Lower the “DK min. pressure current” value 10 % from

Speeds (menu 7-4)

• FR closing delay
When grabbing a tree this parameter provides you with
the option to close the knives “proportionally” without
the feed rollers closing.
The knives can be pulse-closed by “pumping” the button
of the right-hand boom control lever.
If you press the button longer than the time set for this
parameter, the harvester head will close.
If this time is set at too low a value, the delimbing
knives and feed rollers will close fully even with brief
pressure on the button.
If you are unaccustomed to the system, it may be

–UN–16AUG06
necessary to increase the parameter equivalent to a
somewhat longer time at the beginning and gradually
reduce it.
• Start level lower DK

T217787
You can determine with these parameters how deep
you have to press the head open / close button to open
/ close the delimbing knives.
If you set both parameters to equal values the upper
knives move in parallel with the lower knives. When the
parameter has a low value the delimbing knives react
sooner when the button is pressed.
If you set the value for the lower knives higher than the
value for the upper knives, then you can open (or close)
the upper knives only where necessary by pressing the
button slightly. If you press the button further, then both
pairs of delimbing knives will move.
• Start level upper DK
• DK max. closing current
• DK min. closing current
When you use a harvester head with proportional
hydraulic valves (only available as optional equipment,
e.g. on the 746B, 762B and 743), these parameters will
limit the maximum and minimum control currents and
speed of the knives.
You will get the “DK max. closing current” when the
button is activated at maximum. The “DK min. closing
current” sets the start current when the button is
pressed just over the dead zone.
If a harvester head is not equipped with a proportional
valve, the “DK max. closing current” value has to be
2000 and the “DK min. closing current” value has to be
1000.

• Rotator min. control level

During feeding, the rotator will automatically enter the
floating position in order to avoid extra strain on the
harvester head and the rotator. The floating position on
the rotator is briefly interrupted while assorting etc.
This parameter will provide you with the option of
setting the dead band you want for the boom control
lever so that it does not accidentally break out of the
floating position.
If you increase the value, you will have to pull the
control lever further before the rotator moves. If you
lower the value, the rotator will move earlier, in other
words with less lever movement.
If you set the parameter at 1000, this means that the
function will be completely switched off and the floating
position on the rotator can not be interrupted.
• Rotator max. current
• Rotator min. current
The “Rotator max. / min. current” parameters are only
used when the rotator valve is controlled by the HHM.
The maximum value lets you set what the maximum
speed of the rotator will be at the extreme position of
the control lever.
The minimum value lets you set what the speed of the
rotator will be with the control lever nudged slightly.
• Slow feeding

CAUTION: The automatic feed cannot be

stopped normally by all the feed buttons when
the “slow feed” feature is in use.

These settings can be used to feed the stem manually

at a slow speed whenever necessary. A control current
lower than the normal feed settings is given here, to
enable the stem to continue moving.
If the feature is not in use, all the feed buttons function
normally. The [Feed FWD L] button option means that
the feed buttons of the left-hand side keypad is used to
control the feed at low speeds, whereas the feed
buttons of the right-hand side keypad function normally.
The [Feed FWD R] button option works in the opposite
way.

Feeding (menu 7)

When the “slow feed” button is pressed during an

automatic feed, it does not stop but merely slows down
to the feed speed set here. The feed speed returns to
normal when the button is released. If cutting window is
reached during a slow feed, the feed stops.
• Reverse creep feed current
You can set a suitable speed for the reverse creep feed
with this parameter.
After having grabbed a tree, there is an option to
reverse the harvester head, at decreased speed, down
towards the butt end in order to get as low a stump as
possible. This speed also can be used if the saw home
position sensor does not give a signal.
E.g.
If the saw bar has become lodged behind the stem after
the felling cut it can be released by briefly reversing the
feed.

Harvester head tilt up

Normally when a tree is finished the harvester head is

opened fully and tilted up.

The harvester head can always be opened fully by

pressing the head open button once for as long as
required. If needed, the following settings can be used to
limit the opening with a short press on the head open
button.

• Auto raise level

–UN–16AUG06
There are three stages to the harvester head tilt up:
– Level 0: The harvester head tilt can be raised using
the [Tilt up] button. The tilt control is not connected to
the head open button.

T217788
– Level 1: When opening the harvester head, the tilt is
only raised if the head open button is pressed for
longer than “Autoraise delay”. This is useful if you
have to fell trees and pick up stems from the ground.
– Level 2: The harvester head tilt is automatic and is
raised every time the head open button is pressed.
• Auto raise delay
This parameter is used on levels 1 and 2. When you
press the head open button after ending a tree, the
harvester head waits for this delay before rising to
vertical.
• DK open time
Here you can limit the time the delimbing knives open
when the harvester head is opened. The delimbing
knives open completely if you press the head open
button longer than this set time. When the open time
has been set sufficiently long, the knives always open
completely.
• FR open time
Particularly when thinning it can be useful to limit the
opening of the feed rollers in the auto raise. This can be
done using this parameter.
If the time setting is as long or longer than the “DK
open time” or if you press the head open button for
longer than the set time, the feed rollers will open
completely.
This parameter sets also time for constant pressure.

Feeding (menu 7)

NOTE: When you have limited the opening of the rollers

using this parameter, check first that the length
measuring wheel has time to reach the fully
retracted position in the auto raise. This must be
checked with the Tj 755B and 758 harvester
heads in particular to avoid damage to the
measuring wheel.

Default species

If some default species is activated and the automatic

level of the feeding is 2 or 3, the feeding can be started
after making a felling cut directly by pressing:

• length buttons
• grade buttons
• (+/-) buttons.

By using the species buttons, you can select another tree

species and on the automatic level 3 start the feeding as
usual.

If you select "Previous stem", the tree species remains the

same, unless it is changed by means of species buttons.
After a bucking file has been changed to another, the
default species must be checked as necessary. If the
system does not show a tree species when a new stem is
started, the selection must be made with species buttons.

The feed buttons function as usual, irrespective of the

default species setting.

If the tree species is selected before the felling cut is

made, the optimization will be able to make its
calculations more quickly at the start of a stem.

Bunch handling

The bunch handling operation is used to allow the option

of processing several thin stems at the same time. By
pressing the [Tilt up] button before a felling cut, the
harvester head will remain tilted up after the felling cut.

When you want to get hold of a second stem, open the

delimbing knives using the head open button. When this is
released, the two times given below will affect the
behavior of the harvester head.

When you want the harvester head to tilt down, you have
to press the [Tilt down] button.

• Bunch handling
Check this setting if you want to use the bunch handling
operation.
When the bunch handling operation is activated, the
diameter measurement can register the increasing
diameter after a felling cut until the feeding is started.
The bunch handled production is specified in the
production files separately from normal production.
• FR open delay
When the DT open button is released, the time will start
to count down, corresponding with this parameter.
When the time has expired, the feed rollers will begin to
open.
• FR open duration
When the feed rollers begin to open, they open for the
time set by this parameter. At the same time the
delimbing knives will push the second tree in between
the feed rollers.
When the “FR open duration” time is up, the feed rollers
will close with both stems in the feeder track.
• Multi-tree-handling clamps
Check this box if the harvester head (e.g. H480) is
equipped with optional multi-tree-handling clamps.
• Butterfly knives*)
Butterfly knives are small delimbing knives which you
can activate to start function from a selected diameter
and for certain tree species Butterfly knives improves
delimbing result on upper side of the stem.

Auto bend passing

Auto bend passing is the combined name for a number of

functions intended to make the operator’s work easier on
stems which are particularly difficult to delimb. Examples
of these include extremely knotty, uneven or bent stems
and stems with double tops.

Auto bend passing comprises a number of parameters

which influence the function of the delimbing knives and
the harvester head tilt. These can be used only if you
activate auto bend passing level 1 or 2. The functions are
the same, irrespective of which level is set. The only
difference is the buttons you select to use to control the
functions.

• Auto bend passing level

If you select level 0, auto bend passing is switched off.
If you select level 1 or 2, you can use and control the
functions as described in the following pages.

This means that if you select to set the machine to auto

bend passing level 1, the cut, feed backward and feed
forward buttons on the left control keypad, as well as the
length buttons [Key 7] and [Key 8], will lose their original
functions.

If you select to set the machine to auto bend passing level

2, the [Color A, Color B and Color C] buttons on the left
control keypad, as well as the length buttons [Key 7] and
[Key 8], will lose their original functions.

As the operator, you can decide yourself which option is

most practical for your needs.

• Open time upper DK

This is activated only with auto bend passing on (level 1
or 2).
By pressing [Top Saw] on the left control keypad (level
1) or [Colour A] (level 2), you can open the upper
delimbing knives to the desired level. “Open time upper
DK” controls how far the knives manage to open.
If you hold down the button, the knives remain in the
position to which they had opened during the open time.
When the button is released, the delimbing knives close
again.

This is activated only with auto bend passing on (level 1

or 2). When you have run the harvester head so that
the upper delimbing knives have come to rest against a
bend or a double top, for instance, you can move the
harvester head past the obstacle by pressing [Key 8],
which temporarily opens the upper delimbing knives at
the same time as producing a temporary tilt up signal.
This can also be achieved by simultaneously pressing
[Feed FWD R] on the left control keypad (level 1) or
[Colour C] (level 2) - (temporary tilt up signal) and [Key
7] - (flutter open upper knives). Using this parameter,
you can set the length of time the tilt up valve is to be
controlled when these buttons are pressed. When tilt up
time has expired, the tilt reverts to the floating position.
• Open time DK flutter
This is activated only with auto bend passing on (level 1
or 2). Pressing [Key 7], activates fluttering of the upper
delimbing knives. The delimbing knives will then open
and close continuously during feeding. “Open time DK
flutter”, in combination with the “Interval time DK flutter”
parameter, controls the nature of the fluttering. “Open
time DK flutter” controls how far the knives are able to
open before they are automatically closed again. The
function remains activated until the next time you press
[Key 7].
• Interval time DK flutter
This is activated only with auto bend passing on (level 1
or 2). The “Interval time DK flutter” governs the length
of time between each flutter, i.e. how often the knives
are opened.

Find end

• Go on feeding (Find end pause)

Has two settings, on or off. When box is ticked, the
harvester will detects the log end and automatically
measures to the log length. If the box is un-ticked, the
harvester will detect the log end, stop and then waits
until a log grade is selected.
• Main saw/butt sensor offset
Distance from photocell to nearest edge of the main
saw chain.
• Max Current for Finding end (Find end speed)
The speed at which the drive rollers operate while the
find end process is carried out. Normally set at

–UN–28AUG06
approximately 60%. If set too fast the machine will be
jerky causing inaccuracies in measuring and may shoot
the log through the drive rollers.
• Photocell Range

T217887
This is the area that detects the presence of a log. If
too short a log end will not be detected, if too long other
objects may be detected. The range is adjusted by a
sealed adjustment screw on the find-end photocell and
is factory set.
• Photocell Angle
The angle from horizontal to the photocell’s line of
detection. This angle should be set so the find end
detects small diameter trees, (trees of approximately
20cm (8") diameter). The photocell angle is factory set
but should be checked periodically as after time it may
move.

Adjustment of saw depth

There are two sensors which both report a pulse train

when the saw bar is moving. The pulse trains will then be
converted into the sawn diameter. The sensors control the
saw in saw auto modes 1...3. For adjustment, see menu
8-1, Checking and adjusting the saw depth (section 093).

• Start point
This parameter (A) adjusts the sawing depth (S) for the
smallest diameters (50...100 mm) and moves the saw
control curve vertically. Adjustment of the sawing depth

–UN–16AUG06
is begun from this parameter because this affects the
through-sawing at all diameters.
• Cutting calibration
This parameter (B) sets the slope of the saw control

T217789
curve and the sawing depth particularly on large
diameters. There is only a minor effect on smaller
diameters.

• Saw depth adjustment table

You can adjust the shape of the saw control curve and
fine-tune the through-sawing for various diameter
ranges with these parameters (C). Diameter ranges (D)
1...8 are harvester head specific (e.g. 80, 160, 240,
320, 400, 480, 560, 640). Values (C) are 100 as default
and then the graph is straight line.
• Buttress %
Using this parameter, you can compensate for root
swellings so that in felling cuts the saw is fed this
percentage over the calculated diameter. This is set by
species and works only for felling cuts.
If needed, the species must be selected before the
felling cut in order for the species settings to function
properly.
E.g.
If the value is 107, the saw will continue sawing 7%
longer than the diameter which was calculated.

Saw control

Constant pressure is used during sawing if “High pressure

while sawing” is selected in menu 0-5 if the work pump is
mechanically adjusted.

In the machines which have elactrically controlled work

pump constant pressure for saw is set in TMC.

A factory set lower control current of constant pressure is

used for sawing stems of less than 150 mm in diameter,
in order to prevent the saw motor from running at too high
speed.

• Saw bar feed delay in fell cut

These settings are used to set delay on the saw bar
feed to allow the saw motor to reach full speed before
the saw bar begins to feed out. A longer delay for saw
bar feeding is needed in felling cuts if the area’s trees
have wide butt ends. A short delay will prevent the saw
motor from running at too high speed.
This can be used on harvester heads fitted with a
separate saw bar control valve.

If the harvester head is fitted with a separate float mode

valve for the tilt function, you have the option of locking
the tilt function during cross-cutting. This reduces the
risk of the wood splitting during cutting.
This parameter governs the maximum diameter for
which tilt locking will remain activated. If you do not
want to use this function, set the parameter to 10, which
is the minimum value.
• Saw bar feed pressure
This parameter is used if the harvester head is fitted
with a proportional saw bar control valve. This sets the
desired pressure for the saw bar feed.
This parameter has no effect if the FlashCut saw control
is in use. For saw control options, please see menu 0-5,
Harvester head (section 112).
• Saw bar return pressure
This parameter is used if the harvester head is fitted
with a proportional saw bar valve. This sets the saw bar
return speed after sawing through.
• Saw motor max. current (Not applicable to HTH600
series Harvesters)

NOTE: The maximum speed of saw chain is 45 m/s.

This parameter is used if the harvester head is fitted

with a proportional saw valve. This sets the maximum
speed of the saw chain.
The saw chain speed must not exceed 45 m/s, when
the sawing does not involve a log. This table lists the
options for the number of teeth in the sprocket of the
saw chain and the saw motor’s maximum rotation
speeds. The saw chain pitch is 0,404".

FlashCut saw

These parameters can only be accessed if the machine

has them as an optional extra. The option is available if
the harvester head contains proportional control valves of
saw bar and saw motor and a saw motor rotation speed
sensor. FlashCut setting activation: see menu 0-5,
Harvester head (section 112).

FlashCut saw control is only used in crosscutting. After a

felling cut, 30 cm of the stem must be fed before the
FlashCut saw control becomes available.

The FlashCut saw control is aimed at ensuring the fastest

–UN–16AUG06
possible cutting speed, i.e. the optimum saw bar pressure
in ratio to the saw motor power.

The cutting speed must be optimal for the purpose of

T217790
cutting large stems, to prevent splinters. The saw motor
has a pre-defined optimal end speed, which is achieved
by increasing pressure of the saw bar feed.

For this reason, the saw settings are tested on large

stems. The setting is performed by altering the saw bar
pressure. The desired final speed is achieved by a series
of test cuttings.

The available sawing power, the saw chain properties and

various facts affecting the components’ life span and
safety, all help determine the final cutting speed.

• Pressure in felling cut

Felling cut does not use the saw’s rotation speed data.
Instead, the saw bar feed is controled by this
parameter.
• End saw speed (rpm) (Not applicable to HTH600
series Harvesters)
Too low end speed makes the sawing heavy and too
high end speed slows down the saw bar feeding.
This table contains the possible sprocet teeth number
and the motor’s recommended rotation speeds (end
speed). The saw chain pitch is 0,404".

• Start pressure in cutting

This gives the saw bar a starting pressure. The great
majority of saw chain damage occurs on first contact
with the tree. Therefore, the starting pressure should be
as light as possible.
This setting also affects the accuracy of targeting the
color in saw bar marking. A low starting pressure slows
down the saw bar movement and requires a longer
color delay time.
If the system does not receive rotation speed data in
the case of error situations, the saw bar pressure does
not increase from the starting pressure.
• Amplification factor
This value sets the speed, with which the saw bar
pressure is increased from the starting pressure.
The given value can be as high as possible, as long as
the saw motor rotation speed remains above the end
speed mentioned earlier even when cutting large stems.
The saw motor rotation speed during crosscuts and the
success of the settings can be tested in 9-6 menu.
“Amplification factor” needs to be set for large stems.
Therefore, the tested stems need to be at least 30 cm
in diameter.
The setting is intended to ensure that the rotation speed
approaches minimum towards the end of sawing.

Checking and adjusting the saw depth

1. Check and (if necessary) calibrate the diameter

measurement.

2. Set the saw and feeding auto modes to level 1.

3. Check the through-sawing on small diameters (50...100

mm). Make several cuts. The saw bar has to cut
through about 2...5 cm more than the diameter (about
half the saw bar width).

Adjust using the “Start point” parameter. If the saw

does not cut through properly, increase the value of
the parameter. If it cuts too far, decrease the value.

4. Check the through-sawing on larger diameters

(200...400 mm). Now make a comparable adjustment
with the “Cutting calibration” parameter. If the saw
does not cut through properly , increase the value.

5. If needed, you can now fine tune the saw depth at

different diameters using the “Saw depth adjustment
table” parameters. E.g. if the saw cuts too far at a
diameter of 240 mm, the value for this diameter range
should be decreased.

6. Now you can adjust the saw depth for felling cuts using
the “Buttress %” parameter. If the saw cuts too far,
decrease the value. If the saw cuts too little, then
increase the value.

It is better that the saw bar cuts through slightly too far
than too little.

Color marking (menu 8-2)

Depending on the accessories the harvester head is

equipped with the system allows you to use two or three
marking colors and combinations of these.

Automatic color marking is activated for the desired logs

in the bucking instruction. It is also possible to manually
engage or change the color marking before crosscutting a
log.

SED = small edge diameter

–UN–28AUG06
Manual color marking

The [Colour A] [Colour B] [Colour C] buttons allow you to

T217890
manually select a color marking. The color is defined with
the buttons before sawing. A new choice will replace the
previous one.

It is also possible to manually engage a color marking

involving two or three colors by simultaneously pressing
the color buttons desired.

A manually activated function will replace any automatic

color marking and the manual choice will only apply to the
next crosscut.

The color pump can also be forced by keeping the desired

color button pressed, after which color will be injected at
approximately two second intervals.

This feature can be used to mark logs lying on the ground

or to bleed the color marking system. When the machine
has been started, the forcing feature only works after
resetting the system by pressing the head open button.

Adjusting the color marking

• Color delay time

– LED color marking
The “LED” color marking parameter sets the delay for
the color marking function. When the saw bar returns
home the delay function is used to adjust the location
of the paint on the stem held in the harvester.

Sawing (menu 8)

– SED color marking

Using the “SED” color marking, the color delay time 2
starts when the saw bar leaves the home position 1
sensor. The nozzle (1) sprays the color to the side of
the saw bar (2), from where the color marking travels
to the cross cutting surface of the log (3). If the color
is sprayed too early or too late, it hits the butt end of
the remaining stem.
• Color spray time
The mark created can be enlarged by prolonging the
“Color spray time”, which also makes it easier to score
a good hit with the color, but this will increase color
consumption.

Stump treatment (menu 8-3)

The system also allows you to activate an automatic

stump treatment function that takes place at the felling
cut. Parameters are set for each species.

The stump treatment pump can also be manually

controlled by holding the stump treatment button down, in
which case the fluid is sprayed approximately every two
seconds.

• Stump treatment delay

When using separate nozzle spraying this parameter
will allow you to delay spraying after a felling cut, thus

–UN–27SEP06
ensuring that the fluid spray will hit the stump. The
bigger the value the longer it takes before the fluid
spray is discharged.
When using saw bar spraying this adjustment will delay

T217793
the sawing process, making sure that the fluid is spread
over the saw bar.
• Stump treatment time
If the duration of fluid spraying is adjusted to zero, there
is no stump treatment for this species.

NOTE: When using the stump treatment function the

species must be defined before a felling cut.
Otherwise the system will assume that the current
tree species is the same as the one for the
previous log and, as a result, the system will
employ the previous setting also for this stump
treatment.

Selecting the species again after a felling cut will start

an ordinary feeding process in feed auto modes 2 or 3.
• Nozzle stump treatment /

• Saw control
– ON / OFF solenoids
– Proportional solenoids
– FlashCut saw, optional

T217893
When saw control is set for “Proportional solenoids” or
“Flash Cut saw”, “Saw valves” must be set at “2”.

• High pressure while sawing

This must be checked if you want constant pressure in
the hydraulic system when sawing if the work pump is
mechanically adjusted.
In the machines which have elactrically controlled work
pump constant pressure for saw is set in TMC.
A factory set lower control current of constant pressure
is used for sawing stems of less than 150 mm in
diameter, in order to prevent the saw motor from
running at too high speed.
• Saw home sensor min. level
The “saw home position” sensor will sense if the saw
bar is protected within the saw box.
If the sensor does not send a signal, feeding forward is
impossible, and you can only feed backward using
reverse creep feed.
If this value is too low, the system assumes that the
saw is in the home position all the time. However if the
value is too high, the system assumes that the saw is
out all the time. The default value is 150.

• Top Saw (H290/H480)

– Using the Top Saw Function
The Top Saw can be used manually using the top saw
toggle button and using the [Main Saw] button on the
Left Hand joystick. However for the length to be
measured and the volume data to be calculated
correctly the Controller must be advised that the top
saw is going to be used. To do this, select the Topping
Saw Toggle button on the left handle. This adds the
saw offset value to the length to be measured. After the
[Top Saw] cut button has been used the Controller will
display zero on the length screen. If after selecting the
top saw it is decided to use the [Main Saw] instead,
de-select the topping saw by pressing Top Saw Toggle

Boom drop (menu 8-6)

This menu can be accessed only if the machine is

equipped with this optional function. The function is
available if the harvester head has a separate saw bar
control valve and the base machine’s boom valve and
harvester head have been modified. These modifications
are available as optional equipment.

When cutting thick and long logs, the wood may split in
the last stages of cutting. To prevent splits in the wood,
the boom can be automatically lowered during cutting
(does not apply to the felling cut).

–UN–16AUG06
This function is activated or deactivated using the [Fn Up]
+ [Colour A] button combination. When boom lowering is
on, it can, where necessary, be disengaged for the
following cut by pressing the [F2 Left] button on the

T217796
left-hand control keypad before sawing. After this cut
automatic lowering will be activated for the next cuts.

Automatic lowering can also be interrupted by a brief

boom up movement.

NOTE: Remember to keep the harvester head sufficiently

high up when starting the cut so that it does not
touch the ground. The typical distance lowered is
e.g. 30...50 cm. The harvester head must be kept
relatively close to the base machine, as is normal
when dealing with thick stems.

The length of the fed log must be at least 300 cm before

boom lowering is activated.

Using booster batteries

–UN–07JUL03
NOTE: If you need an outside power source to start the
machine, be careful not to short-circuit the battery
while handling the cables.

T192699
NOTE: The machine is allowed to start with an outside
power source lower than 140 A only, f.ex. another
similar type machine or auxiliary batteries.
Connect the auxiliary cables before starting the
assisting machine.

NOTE: Disconnect HPC-CPU connectors (CAN1, CAN2,

PS) before using an outside power source to start
the machine. Reconnect the CPU after removing
the auxiliary cables, couple the power connector
(PS) last.

NOTE: An over 140 A power source, f.ex. booster, can

only be used when quick charging the batteries. In
this case, disconnect both cables between the
machine and batteries. The machine can be
started after the auxiliary power source is
disconnected.

Connecting auxiliary cables:

1. Connect the auxiliary positive cable, coming from a

24-volt power source, to the positive cable of the
machine to be started
2. Connect the auxiliary negative cable to the power
source and the other end to the negative cable or
frame of the machine to be started. Bear in mind this
order of connection when using auxiliary batteries
because a full battery is more sensitive to sparks.
3. Disconnect the cables in reverse order, beginning by
disconnecting the negative cable from the machine to
be started.

Backup (menu 0-3)

You can choose the drive where the backups are to be

saved at the top of the display. The system creates a
“T300BUP” folder for the backups on the selected drive. It
is advisable to save backup copies, e.g. on a memory
stick (E drive), so that the data can be restored even if the
hard disk drive has been damaged. Backups created on
the hard disk drive are useful mainly in the event of
operator errors when the data has been accidentally
deleted. Backups are located on the hard disk drive:
C:/Timbermatic Files/System300/Backup.

If the “Activate backup” is checked the system saves the

–UN–06OCT05
backup copy of the site database after each completed
stem and the system settings after each adjustment. In
that case, a memory stick must be available all the time.

T215869
The backup copy window is divided into two - “System -
Backup”. The system side shows the sites in the site list.
Backup copies of these are shown in the column on the
right-hand side. When a site is removed from the site list
in the “Site” menu (1-3), a backup copy of it is still
retained here.

Backup copies can be put back in the system column,

which will also restore them to the site list. Production
remains saved as a backup until separately removed from
here.

Base machine settings

• Load sense
A load sensing hydraulic system (LS) is working all the
time to keep the hydraulic pressure as low as possible,
in order not to place more of a load on the hydraulics
and the diesel engine than is necessary. When you
have been working with the boom only, the load
sensing system of the machine will be used
automatically.
The constant pressure will be switched on when the
harvester head is in float position and feeding starts

–UN–10SEP04
when the “Load sense” is checked. This means that the
boom will operate with load sensing, after felling a tree,
until you begin feeding.
When “Load sense” is not selected, the constant

T202961
pressure will be active as soon as the “FR closing
delay” has expired, section 092 (Speeds (menu 7-3)).
The constant pressure is switched off after time of
"Constant Pressure after feeding" is expired, section
092 (Feeding (menu 7-1).
• Parallel pump
When a harvester head is fitted to an excavator
chassis, for example, it is possible, instead of using a
pump and adjustable pressure, to use two constant
pressure pumps (high and low pressure) in parallel to
obtain sufficient pressure for feeding and sawing.
• High pressure while using rotator (Not applicable to
HTH 600 series Harvesters)
A tick here ensures constant pressure in the hydraulic
system when the rotator is being used. This can be
used on machines where the rotator is controlled by
HHM.

Harvester head (menu 0-5)

Harvester head settings

• Harvester head
Each harvester head type has its own default settings. It
is therefore extremely important that you have the
correct harvester head type set.
This parameter determines the outputs which must be
used at the HHM, which diameter setting is to be used
and which default values are to be set.
• Tilt valve type 2
“Tilt valve type 2” means that the floating valve of the
harvester head tilt is in series with the directional valve.

–UN–25AUG06
In that case this option must be checked (E.g. H480).
• Set default values
All default values for the chosen harvester head type
will apply after the “Set default settings” command is

given. Any self-made changes to the parameters will
also be wiped out.
• Load parameters (*.mas)
If you have to install the parameter backup copy to the
system, the file have to be saved with an current
program version. As the download has completed an
the test run is done, save the new backup copies of the
calibration values from this menu at least to
Timbermatic files/Mas file. Name the file after the
program version number, for example 2_3_6.mas. In
addition, it is worth of saving the machine parameters
automatically to a memory card with settings in menu
0-3. The machine specific settings remains in program
installation if there is not anything else mentioned in the
installation instructions.
• Save parameters (*.mas)
Save harvester head parameters by clicking "Save
parameters (*.mas)" button. In this file should be saved
and loaded only the harvester head settings.
• Lower DK open in felling cut
This selection keeps the lower delimbing knives open in
