In the PISA 2018-2019 International report the average score in Mathematical Literacy in the Philippines

was 353 points, significantly lower than the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development
(OECD) average of 489 points (OECD, 2019; Mullis et al., 2019). indicating below level 1 proficiency. This
has been attributed to many circumstances similar to insufficient teaching and learning facilities,
learners’ weak demeanor toward mathematics and student incompetence to relate and comprehend the
problem in the time assigned to finish the task (Van Geel et al., 2019). Unfortunately, Covid 19 has
exacerbated the current educational crisis and widened the learning gaps in Mathematics among
students.

In my opinion Grade 7 students in the Philippines does not have the ability to master the skills that is
needed to understand the Set Theory introduced in Grade 7 Mathematics. But , I strongly believe that
improvement can be made to make a more better remediation in the learning process of the students.

Here are my suggestions for improvements.

1.) Teacher Training: Teachers should be well-prepared to teach set theory effectively. Professional
development and training opportunities can help them develop the necessary skills and
knowledge. In our current system of education there is rampant cases of incompetent math
teachers. I hope schools may give importance about solving this problem first before solving the
learners’ problems.
2.) Teaching Methods: Effective teaching methods are essential for helping students understand
abstract concepts like set theory. Teachers should use pedagogical strategies that make the
material engaging and accessible to students. Visual aids, real-life examples, and interactive
activities can aid comprehension.
3.) Curriculum Design: The curriculum's design plays a crucial role in determining whether Grade 7
students can master set theory. If the curriculum is well-structured, with clear learning
objectives and a gradual progression of concepts, it is more likely that students can grasp set
theory concepts. it's important to ensure that the curriculum is age-appropriate, that students
are not rushed through the material, and that there is flexibility to provide additional support to
those who may struggle.
4.) A more focus remediation: Due to time constraints mathematically challenge students are left
with just having to pass the test rather than understanding the concepts.

improvements must be made by continuously examining and improving the curriculum, offering ongoing
professional development for teachers, and incorporating feedback from students. For kids that succeed
in mathematics, providing optional enrichment activities might help push them even more and keep
them interested.
