Recall Worksheet R9.2
Solution
Sum of the numbers = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 6 = 26
n = the number of numbers = 9
8
The mean = 26 ÷ 9 = 2 = 2.89 [correct to 2 decimal places]
9
1 Find the mean (correct to 2 decimal places) of each of the following sets of numbers.
(a) 2, 3, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3
sum = …… + …… + …… + …… + …… + …… + …… = ……
n = …… mean = …… ÷ …… = ……
(b) 8, 11, 12, 9, 6, 3

Solution
There are two 1s, seven 2s, four 3s, two 4s, and one 5, 6, 7 and 8. Therefore 2 is the mode, because it
occurs most frequently.
Solution
(a) Write in order and circle the middle term: 1, 1, 2, 3, 3 , 3, 5, 6, 7
The median is 3.
(b) Write in order and circle the middle terms: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 , 7, 8, 9
The median is the mean of 5 and 6 = 5 + 6 = 11 = 5.5

Recall Worksheet R9.3
Probabilities
The probability of an event is the chance of that event occurring, given as a number between 0 and 1.
If an event is impossible, it has a probability of 0. If an event is certain, it has a probability of 1.
If the numerical value of the probability of an event is closer to 1, that result is more likely than not.
A probability value can be given as a fraction or decimal number. To calculate the probability of an event,
use the formula:
number of favourable outcomes
Pr(event) =
total number of all possible outcomes
Thinking Working
1 List all outcomes corresponding to event A, 4
getting an even square number. Use the formula Pr(A) = Pr(even square number) = 1
to calculate the probability value of event A. 6
2 List all outcomes corresponding to event B, 2, 3, 5
getting a prime number. Calculate the probability Pr(B) = Pr(prime number) = 3 = 1 = 0.5
of event B. 6 2
3 List all outcomes corresponding to event C, 1, 2, 3, 4
getting a number less than 5. Calculate the
probability of event C. Pr(C) = Pr(number less than 5) = 4 = 2
6 3
4 List all outcomes corresponding to event D, 3, 6
getting a multiple of 3. Calculate the probability
of event D. Pr(D) = Pr(multiple of 3) = 2 = 1
6 3
5 The event with the most outcomes also has the Event C has the highest probability because
highest probability. 4 is closer to 1 than 1 or 3 or 2 .
